Will Céline ever return to Eurovision Song Contest?

For those of you not in the US or without cable TV, you may not be aware but... America is trying to remake Eurovision.

American Song Contest, they call it, and it'll feature performers from each state and be hosted by Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson. NBC has been running lots of ads for it during their Olympic coverage. There was also a Super Bowl ad yesterday, I think, so lots of eyeballs. Set to run from late March to May.

I wonder if it'll take. I also wonder if they'll attempt to bring Celine on for some kind of a guest appearance. After all, she'll be one of the few Eurovision-related personalities the US audience is likely to know. Unlikely, since she seems to want to distance herself from that experience, but you never know.

Nah, I get the feeling she’s done making appearances. She barely even acknowledged her fans in the past 2 years, so I can’t really see her going on a silly show like that (unless she’s in trouble financially)

I wonder if Celine is talking to some singers or actors in this part 2 years

I mean she must have talked to Priyanka and Sam Heughan, for the movie

So this American Song Contest thing started last week. I haven’t been watching, but know Céline got name-checked (in reference to Eurovision) in the opening episode.

Representing Kentucky is the singer/songwriter who wrote Ashes. Michael Bolton (yes, the Michael Bolton Céline once opened for) representing Connecticut, Jewel repping Alaska, Macy Gray for Ohio. Not a bad line-up.

Oh, and forgot to mention, Celine’s cellist, Judy Kang, performed with the artist representing Iowa last week (though on keys, not cello).

And seems Céline got another shoutout tonight in relation to Jordan/ Ashes.

Bottom line: small world.

I suspect NBC has reached out to Céline to show up in some way; whether or not she will is anyone’s guess.

That some big names.

Wonder how it will look and sound.

There is nothing than the original Eurovision.

Michael Bolton's song isn't too bad actually! Tho it might sound a bit too "euro pop" for the USA

Michael Bolton?! That’s huge. I didn’t expect that.

The best is yet to come...

60 Minutes did a feature on Eurovision tonight. Focused mostly on Iceland but of course there’s the obligatory Céline mention.

The singer who is representing France at the Eurovision 2023 comes from..... Quebec!!

It would be really really great if Céline will give a shout out to La Zarra :please:

If I recall correctly, a couple years ago another Québécois girl represented Greece.

And clearly Switzerland has been trying to find another Celine 😁

“Three other Canadians have competed in Eurovision: Sherisse Laurence for Luxembourg in 1986, Annie Cotton for Switzerland in 1993 and Rykka for Switzerland in 2016.”

25 years ago Celine won the ESC in Dublin

I had a strange Celine dream last night. Celine had a performance on a current ESC show and Rene distributed dishes in the audience? Does it make sense? LOL

Happy “fanniversary” :-D You’ve got many of us beat by a decade or more! I am so jealous- this was one of the most iconic Céline performances and it launched her international career. I also love her style during this time.

It's so funny how chic and stylish her Eurovision look was at the time - not so much anymore... :-D

Given that this was all long pre-internet, there was practically no way for me to keep track of Céline or find out when releases were coming. (How did we survive or know anything?!) The next time I even heard anything of her was probably WDMHBN at Eurovision 1989, and then I remember somehow knowing that there was an English album coming and having to wait forever to see when it would hit stores.

Even worse, Unison didn't come out in Ireland and the UK until September, 1991 - 18 months after its original Canadian release. WDMHBN had been released earlier in the year - I remember seeing the CD single at Virgin Megastore but not buying it (I didn't rectify that until decades later!). The single didn't set the charts alight in Ireland but at least it charted in the Top 40.

Unison was one of my first ever CD purchases (not the first, but within the first five at least).

How times have changed...

Aww that’s a cute story! I didn’t become a full-fledged fan until 1999, and by then a lot changed in just a few, short years!! 13-year old me had already used AOL instant messenger to track down other fans in the U.S., France, Canada, and Brazil. We shared all our collective information & rare tracks through chat groups and there were plenty of fansites - not to mention her official site and fan club - and eventually the old forum. Those were the days… Céline was EVERYWHERE. Even after her break, there was still a lot of media to track down and peruse until her return.

It’s too bad TC didn’t post about « Ne partez pas sans moi » today. But who knows, maybe we’ll get an HD video in a month or two :giggle:

Ha! Well at least I was around for all of that, too. I can't remember what Céline forum I used to be on in the mid-to-late-'90s, but I was pretty active at the time. Then Limewire was just around the corner to find lots of more rare tracks.

Not to sound ancient (I'm only mid-forties!), but it really is amazing how different everything is these days and just how quickly it all changed. Just in time for Céline to become much less active (or at least, focused on Vegas)...

Forget about her distant cousin; here's the real

Great to see! But can't help wondering... was this lipped?
