Celine (Las Vegas show) [ends: June 8th, 2019] - Official topic

Great piece from Washington Post.

I'm so glad to finally see Celine and Rene get their due - https://www.washingt...3439_story.html

Wasn't able to go through and quote earlier, so here you go -

"The city has Dion and her late husband and manager, René Angélil, to thank. John Nelson, a senior vice president of promoter Concerts West/AEG Presents, recalled what a risk it was for Dion to set up shop at Caesars Palace, given that residencies can span anywhere from weeks to years.

In the early 2000s, Vegas theaters still struggled to book contemporary artists, and Dion was straight off a No. 1 album release with “A New Day Has Come.” But the couple were fans of Cirque du Soleil, Nelson said, and Angélil had the foresight to try to apply its style of showmanship to another sort of spectacle.

Angélil somehow persuaded both Caesars and Concerts West to “join him in this risky, crazy idea for Celine to come here and do 200 shows a year,” Nelson said. “I mean, it was a ridiculous notion that many people didn’t understand. They thought it was way overblown and unsustainable.”

Such apprehension was arguably fair, given that Caesars spent $95 million building the Colosseum specifically for “A New Day . . . ” But the show went on to become Vegas’s most successful residency ever. Dion performed for audiences of 4,000, directed by Franco Dragone of Cirque du Soleil and flanked by about 50 dancers. The theater was exclusively hers until a year later, when Elton John presumably took note of her success and decided to jump on the residency bandwagon with a massive red piano.

John was the first of several big names to follow in Dion’s footsteps. “The Red Piano” ranks third among the highest-grossing residencies — below “A New Day . . .” and Dion’s ongoing production, “Celine,” and right above Britney Spears’s “Piece of Me,” [...]

The residency business went from boomer-filled to simply booming. Artists with younger fan bases no longer viewed Vegas as a “walk into the sunset,” Backstreet Boy Howie D. told Vulture ahead of the “Larger Than Life” show’s extension last year, because Dion and Spears had “made Vegas a happening spot where most artists want to go to.” [...]

After all, as Concert West’s Nelson pointed out, the overall number of Vegas’s visitors — about 42 million a year, or 800,000 a week — generally goes up each year. Residencies are a solid option for those who subscribe to the “Experience Economy” ideology, which is that some people prefer to experience things (travel, museums, etc.) rather than purchase material objects. “That creates a lot of opportunity for headliners and production shows to draw people in, to see these spectacles that can’t tour,” Nelson said. “It’s all a progression of the business that Celine started. . . . People see these stars they dream of in such intimate theaters.”

Really nice to see more and more articles like these from newspapers of record. :)

Vegas has to give Céline an Avenue at her name and give her the City keys, what she's done with René will be written in economics pattern books and tought in local development courses!

Bit more of yesterday's autograph moment.. God this woman is amazing

I get the impression Celine doesn't like too much being asked for autographs in the middle of a show. She feels it isn't fair to everyone else and she has a point.

These moments are cute but I can see that pov, I know I would feel a little jealous if I were there (even if I were to cheer him on. which I would).

Someone getting up to give her a little gift is different from stopping a show to ask something specific from her imo.

So is Celine still the highest paid entertainer in Vegas with $476,000 per show? It was reported that Britney would make $507,000 per show, but did that actually happen? Wasn't that supposed to happen when she started her "new" residency called Domination?

really nice to see her doing M&G not with the golden suit again!

The more i look at it the more i don't like the golden s***. Especially the pants: she has no bum in those pants, it looks shapeless imo

I know I'm always the Debbie Downer on Vegas, but I don't see anything spectacular on her voice on those videos of the last show, let alone on MHWGO, when the start of the playback during the last chorus is becoming SO shamelessly obvious and evident :innocent: :innocent: :innocent:

Sorry but her voice sounds tired and nasal imo, she needs a rest.

I didn’t even watch :-D

However like I said before the one aspect I will miss when Vegas is over will be the “intimateness”. At Caesars it’s very possible for a fan to yell “I Love You, Celine” and be answered or to be able to ask for an autograph like the guy did a couple nights ago. Also even if the songs are done to death that she sings during the most pitt, I consider that part of the show the most thrilling experience ever as a fan; she grabbed my hand, winked and I got a selfie with her, just something that doesn’t happen in a stadium or arena!

True haha, there's some intimacy in Vegas but tell that to this fan from Thailand who managed to interrupt the concert in London 2017 to get his record signed by Céline! Well he only missed not being able to reach out to her and kiss her but a signed record and 5 minutes of glory with Céline in front of that arena isn't bad!! :mdr:

Ahhh this particular concert in London, 21st June 2017... The same first show she opened with that magical humming during TPOL :in_love: I wish they had filmed this show and released it on DVD, it was VERY special!!

I love that moment. She teases and is sassy as heck with fans that go up to her during concerts lol.

I wonder how he got her attention. We would all be so lucky to have a moment like this with Celine.

I don't hate Vegas as much as you do, but I don't even care to watch the vegas video unless there were new song or even just new outfit or hair.

i did watch them but maybe we have seen her too often and all the movements, all the talking - most of them scripted - it does not reach me at all. And many songs we have heard them till exhaustion. From previous tours and the many years in Vegas. I miss that wow feeling i hear in her grammy performances or at the Oscar’s or at last year’s tours. This all sounds too much automatic pilot to me. Plus, the whole setting in Vegas is quite boring imo. Apart ftom the water in mhwgo it is not enough for a vegas show imo.

can anyone please explain who this little girl is?? She's so good at singing! Also, she's so cute and adorable!

That is so cute! Celine is incredible with her fans, especially with children. I also have to say that this reminded me of her her last concert in 1999-2000, when she kissed Rene in the same way. One of my favorite moments of them together.

Guys. Is it true that the ending of TLYM (the ooh parts) is from a 1996 track? OMG

Guys. Is it true that the ending of TLYM (the ooh parts) is from a 1996 track? OMG

could be, if they recyceld it from the lipsync track, which was used until 2009, I believe, it was the same from 1996 or 97 until 2009. But it could also be the DVD track, which was recorded only for the DVD in 2008.

I have the feeling anyway, that her prerecorded tracks, which she uses right now, are outdated, exept the TLYM and ABM ending, they are and sound recent. I hope when vegas is over, we will get new ones for TPOL, IACBTMN, ABM high note and MHWGO climax. New ones are needed! And I think she will and should reduce the amount of shows, she´s doing per year, than she could sing BYLM (please finally again) and maybe IACBTMN fully live again. That would be so great :)

if someone of celine´s team reads this forum, please think about it. Her prerecorded tracks have to blend with her live current voice, otherwise it will become too obvious for the general public to recognize when she doesn´t sing live. Celine is totally allowed to lip some songs, because I want her being around for still a long time with her amazing voice, but they have to be careful, that her lipped tracks aren´t obvious

I'll definitely miss the "always on" option of seeing her, and most of all, the intimate venue.

Mind you, I only saw the current show once, and wasn't really a fan between 2001-15 so never saw AND (which I certainly regret now). But it's the optionality that feels relevant.

I hope this doesn't mean we have to go for months without ever seeing her (though the woman is entitled to a life, so I wouldn't blame her!)

Well said.

Yes I think I should clarify when I say I’m going to miss it meaning I will miss being able to hop on a flight, get my fix seeing her and have fun. I WILL NOT miss this show, it’s become so tired.

I know it just makes the whole production look cleaner! That wire just looks dated and messy, and most importantly the wireless gives Celine more freedom to move.

I never know why she even reverts back to the wired one, that would be like using corded telephone in 2019.

I saw A New Day... for the first time in 2005, still to this day haven’t seen a better show! I’m so glad I was able to see that show, the DVD gives that show zero justice. This current show, the only part I’ll miss is the mosh pitt; not the songs in the mosh pitt, just being up close! I’ve seen this current show twice, and that’s more than enough.

With “A New Day...” you really did leave the venue feeling like you saw something’ mind blowing! It was almost like watching a thrilling movie, it was very hard to not strain your eyes taking it all in, and it a beautiful production!
