"Celine" The Revamped Show

I'm glad that you all think the same way about ABM... It's a really good reason to skip it.... But if they are gonna keep it, I'm sure that they're gonna keep it forever ;(

Of course every song has a different meaning but ABM has been oversung and now the words are really inappropriate. But she may as well sing it like a robot Celine

I believe her team really needs to look at the bigger picture and select songs from across her discography, particularly for her English shows. I go to many concerts every year, and most other artists I see play most of their singles, or at least one song from each album. Celine has released so many singles over the years, and also has other significant songs in her catalogue that were never officially singles, such as LTAL, TCOML etc.

In Celine's French shows, things are very different, as many of the songs performed were often never singles, but have actually become more popular and more recognised over the years because they are performed live so often. Songs like Regarde-moi, Destin & DUAM have become 'hits' purely because they have been included in her shows, to the point where people don't even remember or care whether the song was actually a hit single in the charts or not.

I believe Celine's English back catalogue would be better remembered/recognised by the general public if she performed her other songs more often, as memories of the songs would be reinforced by hearing them live (like in her French shows). For instance, if Celine had continued performing Taking Chances in Vegas after the tour, people would appreciate it as one of her singles and have a certain expectation of it being included at future shows. The problem Celine's team has created is that the general audiences only have an expectation of hearing TPOL, IACBTMN, BYLM, ABM & MHWGO, and are not as aware as they should be of her other hits because they are not performed often enough for people to recognise or expect them. I'd say the only other songs that general audience are accustomed to hearing at her English shows are LCMM/RDMH, which is pretty sad!

I 100% agree with this.

The TCWT totally perpetuated the idea that "the English speaking audiences only come for POL, IACBTMN, BYLM, etc." The English setlist was a disaster. I think her team thought that "The Prayer" and "I'm Your Angel" would be the "surprises" of the set. The French setlist was better, but for a tour that was supposed to partially support "D'elles," she only sang one track from that album, and only sang TLDH from "1F&4T" ONCE. Huge missed opportunity to freshen it up.

I think that good steps forward were taken in 2011 for the first incarnation of "Céline" - adding WDMHBN and BATB back to her repertoire, considering that she hadn't sung those since the FIY tour in 1996; adding "The Reason," which had been forgotten since the LTAL tour. Disappointing that she added and then removed "Declaration of Love," because that was a fresh addition. At the same time, the Bond sequence, while entertaining, was entirely unnecessary.

More positive steps were taken for the "Une seule fois" show and then the "Sans attendre" mini-tour. Revisiting songs like "Je crois toi," "Terre," "Je danse dans ma tete," "Des mots qui sonnent," and "Incognito" in Canada, and then adding "Immensite," "Tout l'or des hommes," "Regarde-moi," and "Je ne vous oublie pas" for Europe was a great setlist. The updated arrangements for songs and transitions (like in "Je sais pas") gave the songs new life.

The opening night setlist for the 2015 version of "Céline," went even further - adding back fan favorites "I Surrender," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "Immortality," "All The Way," "A New Day Has Come," "That's The Way It Is," "I'm Alive," and "Unison." Also, the duet with Elvis, before they changed it and just played the video from "American Idol." Just like what they did with "Declaration of Love," in the 2011 version, they then took major steps back - removing "Unison," "All The Way," and the live performance of the Elvis duet.

SO, it seems like they are slowly starting to try new things - Scott Price seems very open to taking chances (no pun intended) - but, to your point, there are so many other songs that could be included that the audience would know and remember. I always use Shania Twain's Vegas show as the example, as the majority of "casual fans" went there expecting to hear: "You're Still The One," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" "From This Moment On," "Any Man Of Mine," and "That Don't Impress Me Much." Those were the crossover hits - the country music fans will also want to hear some of the songs that were only hits on country radio - but Shania's show had 18 songs - many of which were lesser known singles, and she did very well and the show was extremely entertaining and successful.

POL has basically been cut down to 2 choruses and a bridge, so if it disappeared and was replaced by something else, I don't think people would cry... It wasn't included in leg one of the LTAL tour (when it was much more "fresh" in people's minds) and was replaced by ABM. ABM was then discarded for leg 2 (POL came back), and other than during the Millennium Concert, it didn't show up again until the TCWT. WDMHBN seems fresher now than it did back when she was singing it at every show earlier in her career - because she retired it for a bit, and now it has new life. SO MANY of her songs could do the same thing - "If You Asked Me To" is the perfect candidate for this and people still know that song.

Short list of English songs that would make sense in this Vegas show (although there are many more):

Unison (bring it back!)

If You Asked Me To

Nothing Broken But My Heart (This song is played ALL THE TIME on A/C radio in the US - people know it)

THINK TWICE

THINK TWICE

THINK TWICE

Only One Road

The Colour of My Love (although probably too painful)

Calling You

Falling Into You

Call The Man

The Reason

Have You Ever Been In Love (this should replace TFTEISYF in my opinion)

Taking Chances

My Love

I wouldn't mind if they brought this song to the show. With this arrangement and the acoustics of the colosseum I could really see this being a touching tribute. Could be a replacement for the first time cause that songs gonna be hard to sing now...

Think Twice would actually be a perfect replacement for ABM... Both are really big. They can't just keep ABM because of its last note for which everybody is waiting... come on

SO MUCH more dynamic. And I love how the song builds and then how she used to end it when she sang the song live. I think it would be a really perfect addition with the orchestra.

I would like think twice, but it's a very special song and will easily lose its magic if not performed right. I honestly have no confidence that it would be added in the show without some butchered arrangement that cuts out half the magic. I think I'll pass.

They would have to perform the WHOLE song. If they try and slice it up, it would be a disaster.

Exactly, and the only attempt she ever does at full songs anymore is immortality and the prayer.

The tcwt version of think twice was slightly okay. But the ending was still shortened. The FIY tour version was the best. I'd rather reserve this song for the next time she's in Europe even if it's another ten years away.

I think she also did the full version in Europe during the LTAL tour...

Maybe if it replaces ABM, she'll do the full song since she sings that in its entirety! Haha ;)

Highly unlikely though...

I wonder if they do change things... it's not the question of new things but really some songs would be really hard to sing as far as the lyrics are concerned.... on the other hand though, they might not have time and strength to rehearse or to even propose changes...

I hadn't seen this one either. I didn't think she ever performed this live other than a cappella during the SA tour... I thought all of the "live" performances back in 2005 were playback. Sounds beautiful!

And I second Kev's comment about finding these gems that some of us haven't seen before! Love it!

You haven't??? You missed a LOT! I remember commenting on the forum right after the programme....

You should discover the whole thing! It was AMAZING! It was actually the first time since she started Vegas, or even since 1999, that she performed so many French songs! I remember how I fell in love with Destin performance that day.... Awww and the sweet duet for Sous le vent...

I really hope that she will sing JNVOP in full this summmer. This could be a show stopper with the whole audience singing throughout the whole song. Acapella thing last time was beautiful but way too short

YES! I so whole-heartedly support the addition of JNVOP. The full orchestra behind it would be killer. It's such a beautiful song, and I think with Rene's recent passing it has a whole new meaning, after all the song was written as a "declaration of love for her fans." Not to say this is how she feels (or should feel), but in a way the song thanks her fans for supporting her through everything.

This is another live performance of ''Je Ne Vous Oublie Pas'' filmed in Las Vegas in 2005 for Quebec's Star Académie :

I totally agree that JNVOP should be the french song of her current Las Vegas show. It'd be so much better than ''Quand Ça Balance''.

I know I'm in the minority, but "Purple Rain" is one of my favorite covers she's ever done. Haha... At the same time though, I'd be happy for her own material to replace it - definitely "Unison," although I don't think that "Somebody Loves Somebody" would work live in that segment. How about, since "Purple Rain" is a ballad, "Unison" going into "Nothing Broken But My Heart"? After all, "Unison" was the B-Side to NBBMH! :giggle:
