When I listen to the original recording, I sort of understand the critics who accuse her of singing mechanically -- hitting all the notes perfectly and powerfully, but without feeling. Most of the time, I think that's not a fair criticism, but I see it for this song. (When I was younger, I didn't feel that way at all about this song, but I do now. I think it's something you either hear or you don't). I don't think this song has much emotional resonance for her, and maybe that's why she hasn't performed it in years.
