I came to realize that this is the 4th decade of her career and the very first time she will not be releasing a studio album in the 7th year of it.

1987 Incognito

1997 Let's Talk About Love

2007 Taking Chances

2017 -

Do not get me wrong. I have a thing for dates and silly trivia! Plus, I'm on a lazy Sunday morning so this should be excused. :giggle: :P

Maybe they'll release it this year. We might get a surprise :)

i won't take french accent lesson from you....she could sing in Québécois but she doesn't . When she talks it is something else, she didn't sold her identity like many of our fellow Québécois, she makes an effort but she doesn't sound like someone from France either, she just want people over there to understand what she has to say. And i would love for people to give Celine some merits, all she does good doesn't come from someone else, We hear the french accent from a young age here in Québec because of cinéma etc.. , no need to have JJ Goldman , he is not the only french guy she met, the first was probably Eddie Marnay. So for the french side of thing , i know. She does thing differnet but that's her. So maybe in english it is something else, but deal with it, i don't see the problem. As i said it is not that bad.

When did I say there was a problem or there was anything "bad". I just disagreed about her accent being "on purpose" As I said it's just natural and she tends to mimmick alot when recording, be it how the producer pronounces a certain word when going over a song with her. I've seen this SOOO many times, and thats why I said she takes alot from JJG when he is going over the song with her before recording it.

I don't know if you and the rest of fans have also noticed this or if it's just my impression. Every time she goes to the UK, don't you think she automatically speaks with a bit of a Brittish accent? I might be wrong, but just to give you an example:

Don't know if it's actually the accent or the attitude what changes... I might be so obsessed that I'm wrong

I dont hear a british accent, maybe its how she adapts culturally. Sometimes on US talk show interviews she also speaks that way, specially on the red carpet. She's definitely no Madonna, who totally lost her American accent and sounds like she was born and raised in England.

For me, the best interview of céline was in the 90's.. Rosie Show. They are both funny.. They look great together like they are best friends.

I have to be honest here. Those interviews for me felt forced and unnatural. I don't think they are by any strecth of the imagination friends, let alone best friends. And Rosie O'donnel is quite a horrible person from what I've seen of her after she quit her talk show and then she started showong her true colors and believe me they ain't pretty.

I don't want her to sound "American" either, but I want her English pronunciation to be on point when she sings. It's more about quality than complaining. Sure, she has some cringey lyrics, but that sounds even worse with a French accent. She lives in the US and she talks to Americans all the time, so it's only natural that she would speak US English to some extent, I mean I don't expect her to sound British, lol.

When it comes to her English pronunciation, the bottom line for me is that I know she can do better. It would be one thing if she's always had an accent, but to suddenly "get" one later seems lazy more than anything. She's not a native English speaker so when she speaks I really don't care about her accent. I fint it charming when she speaks, just not when she sings. It's somehow less professional.

I'm a perfectionist, and I want all music that Celine makes to be just that. Perfect. I know that's impossible, and I love "everything" she does anyway, but I would feel the same way if I spoke another language. Like Spanish. She's recorded some songs in Spanish, and I feel like if you're going to record something in another language than your native language, you need to put in an extra effort to make the pronunciation flawless. That's the whole point. Regardless of the language.

 Great post, I agree with everything, and I think Celine got lazy with her english pronunciations when recording. Some of the words sound so horrible like it's rushed and the intonation is all wrong and kills the song.

The only cover that I still want to hear in Celine's voice is this one

That's a giant advertisement for Jennifer Rush and I AM TRIGGERED right now.

A Parisian accent ?? What is it ? XD

I study linguistics for a long time and there is no Parisian accent.

There is a "classical French way to speak" decided a long time ago by the "académie des lettres". And most important Paris isn't France.

As a French guy ( from Normandie ) living in Paris, working with people from south of France and fan of "the little girl from Québec",

I agree with you :D

Even when Celine comes to France and speak to the French audience, she has an accent from Quebec. But she makes an effort and like you said, she didn't sold her identity.

When she is in Quebec, sometimes I can't understand a word of what she is saying, and it's worst when she is joking in québécois.

But IMO when she is singing, she has no accent, for me as a French speaker from France. Maybe on songs like "Ordinaire" or her first albums like "la voix du bon dieu" or "des mots qui sonnent" she has a weird way to prounonce the letter ''R'', a mix between Edith Piaf and Mireille Mathieu... JJ.Goldman just helped her to be softer with letters like ''R" or "N" or "P", and to be more modern. I don't think she had a québécois accent in her songs when she was younger, she just had an old-fashion way of singing, like Ginette Renaud, Piaf, Mireille Mathieu...

But that's interesting to see that Celine has so many attitudes and way of speaking English or French in different countries. That makes her even more unique. An icon.

They have queen b, we have Goddess C. Amen.

You should know when people in North America say "Parisian accent" they are referring to the way the natives of Paris speak. You know the ones that wear the berre, painting on the artist's easel with one hand holding a glass of red wine, and a baguette and ripe cheese in the other... and they say "Oui Oui". I didn't make this up. It's a thing. My dear Parisian nights I remember thee so well with your warm summer nights and warm gentle wind carressing my taut body, with me gazing at the stars underneath the Eiffel tower. Oh how you give me life my dear dear Pareee...

I'm not sure if Céline has become "lazy" with her English. I think it's all about who is directing/producing her in the studio.

She needs more guidance with English songs. And if nobody tells her to sing it differently, then they are part of the problem...

Even her song "Always Be Your Girl" her accent is bit strong.. the climax -- "I can melt the DROPS... a freezing rain.. " it's a bit tight.

I was listening to the Taking Chances album today and her pronunciation on some words are just strange. The way she sings "agaiiiiin" in Surprise Surprise. Since when does she say (or even sing) again like that? It sounds like it should be spelled like this: A Gaiyn, lol. Then there's Can't Fight The Feeling where she sounds somewhat Southern, and it's generally throughout the song. It's not a lot, but it shines through on some words. The way she says "I like the change."

I can't believe that soon it's been 10 years since Taking Chances was released. When I was waiting for this album it felt like I was waiting like my life depended on it.

Definitely. She never had this problem in the 90's. Or even in the early 2000s. When I first noticed this was with the Taking Chances album.

I was also listening to Tell Him the other day because of this discussion. And her English is on point there, so it's definitely a "production" problem, rather than just Celine's.

Ι do not like the idea of Celine purchasing hits at this point of her career, especially if she has to collaborate with average singers like Adam Levine. He is very popular, I know, but I cannot stand his voice. I actually think Celine comes from a different vocal background, as most of her vocal performances are pure and polished.

Again can be pronounced either - a-gain, or a-gen, if you see what I mean lol. I pronounce it a-gain. Most say it the other way - I like to be different 😂

But yep I think it's more down to the producers than celine herself.

The lyric in SS isn't "again"...

It goes..

"You can call it a game, but it's me playing safe."

Agree. And we also have to take into account that the pronunciation of words can vary and may need to be adjusted especially in uptempo songs with a lot of words, like Can't Fight The Feelin'. Or to make some words rhyme with others, so they slightly "force" sometimes the pronunciation. But that's a very common resource in music and lyrics.

What would you say then with songwriters whose songs are a mixed bag of abbreviations, apostrophed words everywhere like " 'em " and other slang and jargon in between? Celine's songs are easy peasy to understand compared to this material so typical around nowadays lol

Gosh no way... Adam Levine has one of the most unpleasant voices I've ever heard for a singer.

He is so nasal.. and Céline tends to be as well. don't want to hear a duck song. no thanks.

I'm not kidding, I never knew. :pinch: I have read the lyrics in the past, but not for a while. Maybe I just forgot. The words are just burned into my mind now. Even if they are wrong, but it's going to be interesting when I play SS later and see if I can hear "a game".

I do this with another song too. Whenever I listen to I Surrender I when she sings: "And the fire is getting stronger, baby" I always hear "These thighs are getting stronger, baby" lol. Everytime.

Haha! :giggle:

I hear "whats making me cum, out of myself..." So it's pretty close. I love Map To My Heart though.

I still can't get over that it didn't make the cut for the standard album.

I think it's not really bad because they are both goofy and it looks like they are going to be having a good time. I don't think Adam Levine is an average singer... It's just that his genre and choice of songs are not really the same in caliber with Celine's but I think they will both sound great together esp. if the song is good and has great lyrics.

Listening to the quality of 'How does a moment last forever' really makes you realise how second rate 'Loved me back to life' album was. Imagine she gains a new generation of fans and releases something like that, I don't think they'd be impressed anymore!

Yes. Her accent is stronger in English songs now; I can really hear it in the new song. Like some of you, my main gripe is that you can't understand random words which takes away from the effect. I think -like someone said- that she has been spending a great deal of time with francophones since her children were born and less time with press and crew who do not speak French. I was really surprised at RC's super strong accent. Both Rene and Celine were/are a thousand times better. I would have thought that he would have been fluent as he has lived here most of his life, but I think he has spent most of that time in an enclave where people were not speaking English. Still, he attended school in Florida for awhile, so it still mystifies me.

Listen to Daria Grinkova-the daughter of Katia and Sergei ( figure skaters). I have heard she has no accent in Russian, but she has none in English either. She, too, was born here and has lived here her whole life with Russian spoken in the home. Maybe, RC was not motivated to improve his skills-but it seems like it would have been easy at his age and in his circumstances. I would love to be bilingual and wish that I had grown up around someone who spoke to me in French when young.

RC was in school for in Florida for 2 years I think, in Benjamin School. It's not a bilingual school. He was home schooled before and after that.

I think he wasn't around of lot of English speaking people as a kid and only got his current friends when he began practicing Hockey about 2-3 years ago. It takes time to loose the accent at his age I think but it could happen.

I'm bilingual and haven't spoken my second language in a while and I have an accent now. But I understand the language perfectly (Danish)

While I do understand that Céline has become lazier with her pronunciation ( both on french and english records), not understanding what she sings is exaggerated.

First, misheard lyrics are common to all artists...

Then, beside Céline, I blame all the people attending the recording. I guess that now her status prevents people from lecturing her.

And actually, in all honesty, songs like "How does a moment last forever" are so.... common ( lovely but nothing extraordinary) that the thing that makes the difference is her voice and the way she pronounces words. That's her own way. And that's what makes it so special.

Same goes for "Encore un Soir" (album) : that's her worst album when it comes to accent but it allows to distinguish her between all other singers.

Posted
Yeah I don't believe Celine is no longer "capable" of pronouncing correctly it's just that she believes that this "rawer" more relaxed way of singing is what people want to hear these days. She's been doing it since promoting Loved Me Back To Life when in reality more people WANT the polished, perfected Celine they are all familiar with.

I'm curious about this since I'm not a french speaker. How is it her worst album when it comes to accent? Is it a mix up of Quebec and French accent or what?
