For several days since returning to Las Vegas, superstar singer Celine Dion has been fighting laryngitis. I was reliably told that she has been under doctors’ orders and followed all treatments to rest her vocal chords. She was ready to restart her Colosseum at Caesars Palace engagement with Wednesday night’s sold-out concert, but just two hours before curtain up, she became ill again.

Celine was promptly ordered by her doctors not to perform and to rest to ensure a full recovery so that she can resume performances Saturday. It was the first show she has canceled in four years. Incidentally, Elton John also had to cancel his last performance here over the weekend, for him due to food poisoning.

Country superstar Shania Twain, who had flown in from her Bahamas home to start pre-production for her Colosseum headliner show starting Dec. 1, was scheduled to watch both stars. Instead, AEG/Concerts West producers used the suddenly empty theater last night for Shania to “walk, dance and sing onstage.”

“That was really cool. We were there until 11 p.m. last night,” I was told. “She wanted to get the feel of the building. She wanted to know where her band and the crew would be hanging out when she comes to town. She saw the dressing rooms and checked the sound system. She’s really excited, and everybody already knows she’s on the right track as the new family is being built around her.”

Shania on Wednesday also checked out chef Wolfgang Puck’s nearby Spago for lunch and enjoyed heirloom tomato Soup, BLT salad (without the bacon) and cookies for dessert. Vegas DeLuxe also has learned exclusively that Shania has tapped Raj Kapoor as director of her Caesars shows as the process begins. The cutting-edge director has worked on the Grammy Awards, “American Idol” and Carrie Underwood’s latest tour.

“It’s early on with the concept sketches, but they already have 20 tableaux to pick -- 12 from that will wind up becoming the show itself. She wants to showcase all her looks, from country to high fashion to pop and rock,” I was told.

Our thanks to contributing photographer Tom Donoghue, who put together a gallery of Shania’s performance at the Dec. 10, 2003, Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena, when she was onstage with more than 100 children singing “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face.”

Shania, who confirmed her residency to me in an exclusive interview last June, is said to be in great shape and played tennis for two hours with her husband, Frederic Thiebaud, right after their six-hour flight here from the Bahamas. The couple left Las Vegas this morning after seeing the early performance of “O” in the Bellagio on Wednesday night instead of Celine.

AEG head honcho John Meglen confirmed: “She’s loving life and is really excited and involved in getting the show ready. She’s having a good time and a lot of fun with it. We think she’ll make two more trips here -- and of course time it to see Elton and Celine then! Musical rehearsals will start this summer in the Bahamas, and then in the fall we’ll move into a Las Vegas rehearsal facility. She’ll move into the building in November, and with our load-ins, some preview shows and Lions Den shakedowns, we’ll be all ready for Dec. 1.

“We have always felt her music was missing from the Las Vegas entertainment scene. You do have Garth Brooks, and now Shania Twain will serve that segment of the market always visiting Las Vegas.”

Meantime, Celine’s schedule didn’t call for shows tonight and Friday, and now everybody is hoping the break will get her back to full health to resume the schedule Saturday. Fans -- several in tears -- who received full refunds learned of Celine’s illness as they were filing into the Colosseum.

A reliable source, who revealed the backstage medical drama to me as it was happening, told me: “Celine was brokenhearted and disappointed beyond words. She wanted to disobey the medics and go onstage, but they warned her it could cause far more serious problems if she went against their orders. It’s better that she missed just one night rather than create a worse, ongoing problem of several nights by pushing it before she’s well again.”

“The problem I have with haters is that they see my glory, but they don't know my story...”

I do hope Celine will get better soon and her vocals are still in great condition, the last thing we want is that nasal voice to come back lol Celine's voice right now is amazing! I hope all goes well Celine..! :)

Also, how cool will it be if Shania and Celine did some type of collaboration as they are both going to be at Ceasers :) This would be cool, i know alot of fans would like to see them both do something together, plus they are both great freinds!

Just looked at what Celine has: :( :(

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx (voice box). Symptoms of laryngitis include:

hoarseness,

loss of voice, and

sore throat.

The larynx

The larynx is a tube-like structure found at the entrance of the trachea (windpipe). The lump you can see at the front of your throat, commonly known as the Adam’s apple, is your larynx.

The larynx has three main functions:

It helps channel oxygen into your trachea when you breathe.

It acts like a valve, closing off the trachea when you swallow to prevent food or liquid entering your airways.

It contains two membranes (the vocal cords) which vibrate as air passes through them, producing the sound of your voice.

Laryngitis causes these membranes to become inflamed. They cannot vibrate properly, which leads to the loss of voice associated with laryngitis.

that's not good indeed..but it also said":

Outlook

The outlook for acute laryngitis is excellent. Most people will make a full recovery within three weeks without developing complications.

The outlook for chronic laryngitis will depend on the underlying cause. If the condition is due to factors such as smoking or drinking alcohol, your symptoms should get better if you stop smoking or drinking.

In cases of GORD-associated chronic laryngitis, medication will probably be required to prevent acid from leaking up into the throat.

So let's hope that this is something temporary. It seems that she got the symptoms after having been in Jamaica, so if she did not have the symptoms before, it can't be chronic.. I think..hope!

They just cancelled 4 more shows :(

"We regret to inform you that the following Celine Dion shows at The Colosseum have been cancelled, Feb 25, 26, 28 & 29. Celine is battling a virus that has caused inflammation of her vocal chords & is currently receiving treatment. She has been instructed to rest for the next 7 days to fully recover. Celine is very upset about disappointing her fans, & made the following statement. "I feel terrible about not being able to do these shows. I feel so bad for the fans. I don't like to let people down... it's the thing that bothers me more than anything. I really hope everyone understands how sorry I am.” Those who purchased tix with a credit card will be automatically refunded. Those who purchased tix with cash may present tix at the original point of sale for a refund. Ticket holders who purchased thru Ticketmaster may call 1-877-4-CELINE."

Wow. The comments on Celine's official website range from really sad to mean to pathetic. I can understand why people would get upset, but for people that tell Celine to to pay them back, that's just rude. Life happens, and we know she feels bad about it.

I know that one cannot relate to this unless it happens to you directly, but I'm sure I wouldn't get hysterical!

I've read those comments too. Some people are being ridiculous. Some wants M&Gs because she cancelled. What about all the other shows she cancelled in the past twenty years? It is not fair to those people and I bet it will lead to more chaos and complaints in the end from people feeling cheeted by her at one point.

I can understand that people feel dissapointed when the show gets cancelled, but Celine's health is more important. Everybody gets sick, and I bet some of those people that are so mad would not even hisitate to phone their boss to say he/she won't come to work if they were in Celine's shoes. It is the same thing, the show is her work. However, Celine's voice makes out a very big part of her work. Permanent damage to her voice, and she can't work.

What if Celine decides to go against her doctors orders just to keep those fans happy and something happens to her onstage. I will definitely feel very bad if I sat in that audience and she collapses or something like that. Sometimes I'm very happy her doctor puts his foot down, otherwise she probably would perfom anyways because she feels so bad about cancelling.

I have to admit if one of the "A New Day..." shows were cancelled one of the times I was in Vegas I would've been absolutely devastated. However in the cold light of day you've got to realise that she's just human and in her whole career she's probably cancelled less than 1% of her shows. These things just happen from time to time.
