One hundred musicians are lined up on the stage of Avery Fisher Hall. Today, a band will be added to the full symphonic orchestra to enrich the sound for a repertory of popular music.

 

The first rehearsal is scheduled for 2:00PM. The jet lag, because he is in a constant whirlwind tour, recedes after just one night. Indeed, Andrea is in top form. His voice is pitch perfect as it echoes within the theater walls of Lincoln Center, the “home” of the New York Philharmonic.

 

With the conductor, Alan Gilbert, Andrea could immediately feel a connection that reverberates through the music. And the orchestra does not hold back as it flourishes in full dynamic and lively colors. Tomorrow’s rehearsals will be dedicated to lyrical music. Today they are concentrating primarily on the popular songs that make up the second part of the program: from the dazzling arrangement for “More,” to “New York, New York” and “The Prayer.”

 

With Andrea is Chris Botti, the sensual genius trumpeter, along with the beautiful and talented Nicola Benedetti, the Italian Scots virtuoso who wields a formidable violin in the enchanted gardens of “Aranjuez,” Joaquín Rodrigo’s celebrated concerto rearranged for Bocelli by Lorin Maazel.

 

Celine Dion, the star of a highly anticipated duet, was unable to join the company today. But Andrea wants to rehearse the song anyway for the benefit of the conductor and the musicians, so he sings both parts – first his own, then Celine’s, in falsetto. The effect is exhilarating as it melts away the fatigue of more than ninety minutes’ hard work.

 

Outside, the New York sky continues to regale us with such high definition clarity. None of the people involved in the organization mentions the weather (probably not to jinx it) but everyone looks skyward at regular intervals.

 

Work continues later, in the hotel room, for both Andrea and Veronica who, despite the pregnancy, does not stop for an instant. Journalists have come from all over the world, each one claiming his spot to take note of the latest updates and tidbits. Among them are a journalist from USA Today and two from the British media outlet Reuters, who interview Andrea separately. Afterwards a necessarily simple dinner, brightened by the presence of family members: Edi Aringhieri Bocelli, Andrea’s mother, Veronica’s mother, and sons Matteo (who attended the rehearsal) and Amos (who joined them later in the evening).

 

Meanwhile, the stage begins to take shape on the Great Lawn. The enormous, ad hoc structure has been erected, and the workers now tend to the technical details. Yesterday afternoon Andrea Bocelli unexpectedly blended in among the visitors of Central Park walking side by side with Filippo Sugar, the “protector saint” of this mega-concert. Andrea had come to personally check the dimensions of the stage – a way to familiarize himself with the surroundings, yes, but perhaps also a way to decompress. Despite the determination, and confidence from having given his all, that characterize Bocelli’s days in New York, perhaps, for just a moment, he feels a chill run through his body, given the enormous frame being constructed around his voice.

it's not surprising at all. I couldn't understand people who thought that there would be other song than TP. Although it would be nice of her to sing one more song on her own but since recently things look how they look it's sure she won't

This is so exciting. The only thing that could top this is Barbra doing a similiar event and Celine showing up and performing Tell Him.

That was a rare exception when she didn't have it on her and she had to actually sing it lol.

 

But seriously!!! I haven't been so excited for a Celine event in a long time. All her other promo it's obvious, its the same old stuff, etc.... I don't even like The Prayer that much, but it's great to hear her singing one of her own songs...particularly a song that she hasn't done 3404430808 times.

I didn't realize this until you brought it up. Weather looked good for a while. Ugh. My concern is that they won't make the call until way later, after we've been out there allllll day. At least Friday looks good, chilly, but sunny. So, at least if Thursday doesn't happen, Friday looks like it's good to go.

If Celine is going to be in New York for 7 days at least... It's not possible that she will be recording something? NYC Crew, could you investigate?, I think she always go to the same studio in NY, but maybe I'm wrong.
