Celine on Oprah 2011

That's what I've been thinking for years too :w00t: She's becoming a premature Barbra... but she's too young for tha, and above all, she is MORE than that! Much much more :nono:

Don't get me wrong, Barbra is a legend in her own right. But Celine is still a household name... she needs to keep putting out records with a young pop feel to them something like the song "Naked" would be great. Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez are Celines age, and still have the sex appeal (which Celine has as well) and the popular music. I wouldnt mind if she sang a few classics at a concert, but please Celine when your on National television and the world is watching dont do it! Its too premature for Celine to promote other peoples music as if her own career has died or accomplished all it could, keep going, keep promoting your own music...im sorry for rambling but music business is a competition and Celine is becoming her worst enemy when she goes out and promotes songs that arent hers.

I have to agree ^^ I'm tired of covers. Of course I'll listen to her sing anything, but I miss new songs and upbeat songs and I just hate covers really! I mean how awesome would a new album have been right now and a few new songs mixed in? dah. she needed another year. While I understand why she's doing some tribute pieces, etc. I was thinking MJ tribute will be covers, Hollywood classics will be covers, james Bond covers, Lullaby is a cover....eish. I want to hear Celine sing Celineeeeeee. Edited by ladylindsey

Hasn't Celine always done that though?

She has a history of covers and it's everywhere in her career. Sadly. She uses covers as album tracks. She uses covers in concerts - the set list of the last tour was crammed with them, criminal really. She uses covers as singles (All By Myself, Taking Chances, Alone, I Drove All Night, If You Asked Me To - and that's only naming a few.)

Now every artist covers songs, it's part of the music business. However not many build a career around it and sadly, like you say, Celine seems to be doing this more and more frequently.

It's a worry when covers become "staples" in a set list - I Drove All Night, All By Myself, River Deep Mountain High for example. Whilst Celine's versions of these songs may be the definitive versions that fact remains that they aren't her songs.

The question you are quite rightly asking though is why? Celine has HUNDREDS of songs in her back catalogue, original songs at that written specifically for her. Many of which have never seen the light of day. Why don't her team let her sing them?

Just how many of us would love to see a concert featuring: Then You Look At Me, Reveal, Just A Little Bit Of Love, Make You Happy just as examples?

AND the fact that's she's returning to Vegas doesn't help much, it looks as if she couldn't get success again if not for Vegas help :ermm:

So I say René and Céline SHOULD know about this thoughts the sooner the better. Less baby and happy-doopy talking and more listening to the fans wishes!

What's happening with her back catalogue?? Are they having some copyright issues with her own songs or what? I can't find an explanation, its been many years already without seeing or listening her performing different songs from her discography, and sorry but I can't see other than the same situation with the new show, except for 2 or 3 new songs but the rest will be again the same hits + the announced covers :pinch:

I agree with you Lindsey. It would be fun if she wouldn't be announcing so many covers. It's getting a little annoying. Sometimes I wonder what's going on in Céline and René's heads these days... I'm scared that the new show might be a little... well, boring if there's too many covers since it seems to be going in the direction...

Good observation Lindsey about the basketballs in the living room!

I prefer new covers... They always choose better than new compositions. I prefer I've Got the World on a String, Nature Boy or It's a Man's Man's Man's World instead Sorry for my Love, Rain, Tax or Eyes on Me...

Zuv, if she chose to play it safe its her fault; the version of the song [Lullaby] sang by Judy Kuhn uses the vibrato and makes the song much more interesting than the version Celine performed; Celine sounded burned off from the first note she sang till the last note she sang;

Listen to this interpretation of the song; IMO it's much better than Celine's:

Annoying to say the least, its getting distressing!

Sincerely I want to support Céline with all my heart and passion as a fan, but with song setlists like this she's not making it easy :ermm I mean I adore this woman and all what she is behind the singer, the persona is what lives behind "when the lights go down" as she says, but come on... does she ever think that maybe she's going *a little* far with the "covers" thing? that she has also fans in her mid 20's and teens who are discovering her discography now, but never get the chance to see her perform the songs in her albums? :ermm:

How long its been since the last time she performed Where Does My Hert Beat Now, the song that opened her the doors into the US market? And I'm not even talking about songs that she has never performed from that album, like If We Could Star Over Again (what an amazing ballad to be performed with an orchestra, can you imagine! :w00t: ). Come on... :ermm:

Yeah now you can come up with the negativity thing but you know its TRUE! :innocent:

I agree Javito. It's not that I don't like covers, she has done some amazing ones but it just seems to be getting a little over-board now. I like a few covers like It's a man's world and I've got the world on a string but not just that! It would be fun if she could pull out a couple of old songs but it would be the best of she could find a balance between the covers, her hits and new songs!

okay, catching up...

I guess I'm counting the birthdaye as day one so thought it was five months but is actually four...I can count!!

Okay, where are all the real hard-core fans right now? I loved the song she sang, but I would so also have loved some high notes, too. I feel like a flip-flopper saying that though. The Celine with That's the Way It Is as a hit is still there, she can do better than that but i don't think there's anything wrong with her. What if this is what she wants?

Come on, guys, I hate to say I am not liking this but I respect and thank all of you for sharing your opinions. I don't want to come across as mean or something cuzz that's what we do here, share our opinions. no matter what is said/thought here, I still/always will love her. And I for one, can't wait to see her, no matter how they're promoting the show.

The only thing that I think she can do with her old songs is to renew all of them... maybe an intemporal orchestra version of Where Does My heart Beat Now... or a contemporany jazz version... But if I have to hear a 90's ballad on 2011 I can committ a suicide... Probably that's the mean problem to Celine Dion producers: all her principal hits are from 90's and this decade it's musically death... nobody sings again their 90,s hits... too different to nowadays music (reminiscence of the 60's or 70's or David Guetta's style smash hits)

I'm the end though, I mean, I'm happy if she's happy. I mostly want her to do what make her happy, that's all that really counts for me. It's just that the covers can be a bit much. I did really like Lullaby!

Not going to do quotes, to much. lol.

I agree with being worried about the setlist. With the songs we know will be in plus the known covers, there is not much room for anything "rare". The fact that they are saying it is 25+ songs makes me a bit worried as well. It could work in our favor, especially if the covers she does are the ones that are shortened to about a minute, but what if the covers are NOT the ones that are shortened and she makes the dreaded "hits medley" 7 songs now instead of 3 and shortens each to the length they were on An Audience With.... (well for a couple of the songs that would be a good thing).

I do think they've heard from quite a few people that TYLAM needs to be in the show. I'm not counting out that THIS could be in, but this would be the only "OMG!!!!!!!" moment in terms of a song being put in that shocks us.

And I can't stand the covers either. Some of them, I do not mind - like ABM, TPOL, IACBTMN, etc. These should be staples in her show because they are not only the more well known version of the song, but they are some of Celine's more well known songs as well. If You Asked Me To could be put in this category as well.

I'm not crazy about RDMH, IDAN, At Last, WAWW, etc being in her shows because they are not really hits for Celine at all. In all honesty, nobody cares to hear these songs. They were flops. And I don't want to get any response saying, "IDAN was not a flop because it went #1 on Quebec Radio Chart for one day in airplay." etc.....who cares. That is not important.

I have no problem with her doing the covers in ONE show, like is the case with WAWW and At Last. But for IDAN, a freaking karaoke rip off flop, to be performed 800+ times over two shows....that is just to much.

It should have been retired in 2006 along with WAWW/At Last.

RDMH I do not have a problem with as much either, but I do not think that it should be ALWAYS in the setlist, but it is not bad enough to be retired forever. It should be rested and brought back like it was for about 7 years or so.

So the covers where Celine's version reigns, I do not have a problem with. But the covers where Celine's is not the most well known, these need to be thought about before they are performed 900 times in a row.

Now, for the covers that have not been performed by Celine, but rather are just included in concerts.... I don't mind the ones where she does something exciting and changes up the song, makes it her own, etc....Can't Help Falling In Love, The Show Must Go On, I Got The Music In Me, It's A Man's World, etc... These have provided some of the greatest moments vocally, and in terms of just the show itself. They are powerful songs that get the audience excited.

But for karaoke songs like I Wish, I've Got The World On A String, Fever, We Will Rock You, Twist And Shout, etc.....let's leave those to the karaoke singers.

Yeah! I mean The Power Of Love?? Isn't her most freaking amazing cover, her most popular song (with the permission of Titanic :giggle: )?? And that's a cover sang in almost every country in every language!.But from that song to another one like this "Lullaby"... there's a gooood distance. Geez that song lacked everything, it hadn't any great vocals to show off, it hadn't any tempo, it hadn' any music itself but for the piano solo... is she really presenting herself like that for a new 3 year show??

Excuse me, did I hear a piano solo in Oprah??? And is this supposed to be about 31 piece orchestra with Céline in the show?? Have they gone earlier or what? No she didn't have to bring the 31 musicians with her to Oprah, but maybe a quintet to display a small appetizer would have helped! Please René, did you say you were working hard or are you just going for the easy more and more each time...

Falling Into You? When I Need You? The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face? They are covers too, but dammit, they have something with it, they have some nice vocals, you can even dance to those songs compared to "Lullaby"! :P

I don't know if Céline has a song consultant for her concerts, but he/she must be the same who advised her in the mid 90's with her clothing and hair!

Yes, don't think that I haven't thought that many times before, maybe she's just doing what she likes and all these slow, sleepy or boring songs are of the likes of Céline :whistling: . I HARDLY believe that when she has told that one of her favourite bands ever was AC/DC  but well, let's put it that way.

BUT she has also said this monday when she arrived to Vegas that she did not want to *disappoint* fans. But to disappoint someone, you need to know that you have done something bad, or not the best you can, and for that, you need to be aware of people's opinion. Does Céline or René know a single fan opinion about this? NO. They live completely in the limbo about all what we think and say here  . It's just dreamworld since ages.

Solution: have they taken the chance to ask us directly for the songs we would like to see her sing in this new show? Have they even cared? NO. I do feel disappointed about that. What's the use of her official site? Wouldn't have been great if we could have shared in polls our favourite songs to be performed in the new show? :thumbsup2:

"Hush, now... I see a light in the sky"

Well then, we've got to do something. Is there a way that one/many of us can get our feelings known? I have every faith in the world that if she knew what is being said, she'd want to do something about it. I do not at all think she means to put people to sleep or disappoint them. I for one am not looking forward to reading everyone's reviews after they see her in Vegas, because if this is how a lot of people feel, I have a feeling I'm going to disagree with most of you. I feel like the only one who thinks the way I do, but I'm happy we're having this dialog.

I'm just concerned she is going to lose fans because of this and I can't ask people to stay with her just because of her past. Like I've said before, I'd just resigned myself some time ago to the idea that her radio spotlight run was done, but I see now because of you all that it doesn't have to be. So if this is how everyone's feeling, then let's start flooding the fanmail or any other means we have of getting even close to anyone at all who has even the slightest contact with her. A telephone not picked up cannot be answered, we can't complain if we don't try, just like you can't be upset with who wins an election of any sort, presidential or american idol, if we don't vote and voice these things. It would so be nice if they'd ask, but since that's not happening, let's get proactive and tell her. Knowing her as we all feel we do, I think she'd listen and want to hear these things. If anyone has any ideas of how to go about this, please share them and let's try to get them to her. But we're not powerless/helpless here, there's more that can be done here than complaining on a forum for people who are supposed to actually like her!!! I came here to feel like it's okay to flail and gush about her, I'm feeling now more like I can't even hear her because I'm so afraid this is it for her by all acounts I'm hearing here. I don't feel very hopeful right now, because what if this is what everyone thinks?

Nevertheless, please don't stop sharing on my petty account. I'm just one person, and, maybe a little too late, still and maybe the only one in the boat thinking that she can do no wrong and I will love her anyway. And I know that no one here is disputing what she can do and how amazing she has been and isn't done being. That could be why you're all so passionate about this, because you/we all know what she's capable of and don't want to see her demise.

I just want to hear her voice, hear her sing anything, I don't care what it is I'll still be enraptured/marveled over and over again by it. And I have three years to get to her and I will, and I hope to meet many of you there when the white-cane invasion from the San Fran Bay Area, California arrives!!LOL!!!

One more thing to add...I realize being a fan and being here doesn't mean everything is always perfect and we don't all only sit around talking about how amazing she is. This is part of that experience known and encompassed as CDF!! And I am thankful you all put up with me and let me be part of it.

I don't mean to be rude but singing the actual song is nothing extravagant for me; Celine used to be an-over-the-top singer in the 90s, she would have done the same thing to the song as Judy Kuhn performed it and more. BTW, Judy Kuhn is a trained operatic singer; she wasn't over-singing. Man people on this forum listen to Celine's singing today and say it's one of the kind; I only see a burned-out singer who have to take her breath in between verses in order not collapse before the end of the song. I hear her rendition of Imagine on Larry King and compare it to the snippet from the 90s videoclip that is available online and I see a HUGE difference; Her voice is too heavy today and her vibrato is totally gone; she used to make music with her voice only; now she's actually struggling to get her head notes straight. I'm not shocked when someone gives birth to twins and have only a few months to rest then she has to get a show together that adds up stress. Celine, till this day, hasn't known the real meaning of scheduling her life for her to get REAL rest not scheduling her life to get back on her career and this totally backfires on her voice which is IMO not ready yet.
