Barbra Streisand: Official Topic

I agree. I think Timeless was the last tour that Barbra sounded crystal clear (although her albums in the early 00s sounded good).

I think the oldest & most powerful female voice in the world is Shirley Bassey. She's 76, and performs just as rarely as Barbra these days, yet her voice is still amazing. Her performance of Goldfinger at the Oscars earlier this year blew everyone away.

Shirley has a ridiculously powerful and huge voice...problem is I hate the tone and her interpretation. She's so one-note.

I will quote what I said in the Lady Gaga thread:

Ok I downloaded the album and it confirmed one thing; I utterly, truely, whole heartedly HATE jazz (those damn American Classic Songbook covers) !

She sounds great, but I don't like the songs. NEXT!

I love jazz, but as I was saying in some other thread, there was nothing new.

I'm a fan, so I love to hear her voice and I love that she's in such a great shape vocally.

But, if you're not a fan, I don't know what could possibly interest you in this album.

I totally get what you're saying, Davey84. I downloaded Gaga's album too, and it did nothing for me. All of the songs have been sung for much better singers already, in my humble opinion.

Like I said to a friend; the problem I have with these continuous covers of the American Songbook, is that Barbra (and many others like Tony Bennet & Rod Stewart) were alive and already recording artists when those songs were (relatively) new... There is no originality anymore!

I have a feeling all of Barbra's albums contain the same songs!

It is a shame the industry pushes artists in a specific corner. Barbra has to sing crooner songs, Kylie has to sing easy disco pop, Celine has to sing ballads... Though I believe that Barbra could easily record a modern (even uptemp) album with original songs. As a fan I would be truely disappointed.... I don't mind the covers on Celine's albums, but I hope she'll never start releasing covers only albums. :(

Sorry Babs, I listened to it once, but it's already deleted...

I get your point.

My problem with some covers Gaga and Streisand made is that they have been sung before by powerhouses like Judy Garland, for example. That's hard to top.

If you're not bringing anything new to it, why do it?

You should look deeper into her catalog. She did a great pop album in 2005 called Guilty Pleasures that contains her most recent dance hit that topped the dance charts "Night of my life." She has been recording new pop music since 1969's "What about today" but scored big with 1971's "Stoney End." In recent years, yes, her music is slower, but she is recording what she wants to her own high standards. She certainly doesn't need to appeal to those that need a drum beating to stay awake.

I was dreading her remakes of old classics, but the album is new and fresh and is topping the charts. Sent from my SM-G3818 using Tapatalk 2

She hasnt recorded in the studio any of Judy Garland's big hits. She only has paid tribute to her on stage singing Over the rainbow, it's a new world, and the man that got away. Barbra has been recording standards since her very first album. She is going back to her roots.

I didn't mean that she recorded a Judy Garland song. I said songs Judy sang, like Come Rain or Come Shine and How Deep is The Ocean. That's hard to top if you're a fan. I also didn't mean they weren't good, just that it's not my favorite version.

I love Streisand and I agree with you that Guilty Pleasures is a great album, and it's one of my favorites.

If you're (what I call) a decent singer (legend, timeless etc) you can sing almost anything at least. You can change styles and mix your voice with different voices/genres. Yes you may be pigeonholed, but only by people who don't actually know that much about their back catalogue. If people like this want to pigeonhole great singers like Celine and Barbra, let them. They're the ones who are missing out! Every singer dreams of having a signature song, but with it you do get typecast. Same goes for actors etc.

I'm glad Barbra is still recording, and I'm sure she's recording what she wants to record!

I LOVE Guilty Pleasures (or Guilty Too as it was called in the UK), it has some great tracks on it. I do prefer hearing Barbra singing more contemporary (and original) songs, but the new Partners album is great!

My favourites are: Michael Buble, Billy Joel, Andrea Bocelli and Jason Gould.

Stevie Wonder sounds as constipated singing People as he did singing Overjoyed on Celine's LMBTL!!

I wanted to go to the NY show on the 11th, but the tickets are just not worth it for me... I paid $195 to see Celine in Montreal for the ground block and I pay the same amount here for the furthest seats from the stage.
