To say Taylor Swift had a remarkable year would be a comic understatement. She sold more albums than any artist not named Michael Jackson. Her first headlining tour, Fearless 2009, sold out every show within minutes. She became the youngest woman to win the Country Music Assn.'s entertainer of the year award, and she set seemingly every chart record that exists. But most important, she proved herself a graceful, timeless celebrity, handling hosting duties on "Saturday Night Live" and a rampaging Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards with equal aplomb.

 

2. Beyonce

 

As Kanye West infamously pointed out at the 2009 VMAs, Beyonce made one of the best videos of all-time. "Out of all my videos, ("Single Ladies") was the least expensive and took the least amount of time, and it ended up being the most iconic," Billboard's 2009 Woman of the Year reflects. "But once we got on the set, it was like, wait a minute. This is something special." Not only did the ubiquitous clip inspire thousands of YouTube imitations, it also helped push her "I Am... Sasha Fierce" album to last over a year on the Billboard 200 chart.

 

3. Lady GaGa

 

The chart-topping hit-maker and headline-grabbing fashionista from Yonkers, NY became the first artist ever to send her first four singles to No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. What's her secret? "A hit record writes itself," said the winner of the 2009 Billboard Rising Star award. "If you have to wait, maybe the song isn't there. Once you tap into the soul, the song begins to write itself. And I usually write the choruses first, because without a good chorus, who really gives a f**k?"

 

4. The Black Eyed Peas

 

In 2009, Will.i.am, Fergie, apl.de.ap and Taboo became the first group in history to spend six consecutive months atop the Billboard Hot 100, thanks to the succession of two No. 1s songs ("Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling") from the band's fifth release, "The E.N.D." -- a body of work that Will.i.am refuses to think of in traditional terms. "I'm trying to break away from the concept of an album," he told Billboard. "What is an album when you put 12 songs on iTunes and people can pick at it like scabs? That's not an album. There is no album anymore."

 

5. Miley Cyrus

 

What does Miley Cyrus want to be when she grows up? The 17-year-old superstar, who spent 15 weeks at No. 1 on Adult Contemporary with "The Climb," told Billboard last year, "Songwriting is what I really want to do with my life forever. No matter how long what I'm doing here lasts, I want to be a songwriter for the rest of my life." With the soundtrack to her "Hannah Montana" movie climbing to No. 1 on our Billboard 200 albums chart this spring, we think the queen of the teens is off to a pretty good start.

 

6. Kanye West

 

Mr. West is Billboard's Top Male Artist of 2009; an impressive honor, though after his bullying of Taylor Swift at this year's VMAs, we suspect he may be a little irked to see her ranked five spots higher than him on this overall artist list. Still, despite his sometimes misplaced enthusiasm, the hip-hop hit-maker never fails to give the fans (and the foes) his all. "I've always wanted to sound like I was rapping at the top of a mountain," he told Billboard in 2005. "I wanted to change the sound of music."

 

7. Britney Spears

 

After a few tumultuous years that found Spears in the tabloid more often than the charts, Britney redeemed herself with a pair of chart-topping singles -- "Womanizer" and "Circus" -- from her 2008 comeback album. A successful world tour brought her back to center stage, but the real proof of her rejuvenation was the one-off single "3," which debuted atop the Hot 100 chart in October, making Spears the first artist to perform the feat in three years.

 

8. TI

 

Sadly, T.I. -- who has done big things on the Rap Songs chart this year -- will be celebrating his 2009 successes behind bars in Forrest City , Arkansas , where he remains imprisoned for federal weapons charges through March 2010. But the Atlanta emcee, who scored two of the biggest hits of his career with "Dead and Gone" and "Live Your Life," is taking his punches in stride. "I must be a man and stand up and accept responsibility," he told B.E.T. in May. "I exercised extremely poor judgment, and for that, I must be willing to pay whatever price that comes before me."

 

9. Nickelback

 

Why did the band that sold 7.3 million copies of its 2005 album, "All the Right Reasons," entitle its follow-up "Dark Horse"? "We never feel like we'll ever be done trying to prove ourselves," Chad Kroeger told Billboard last year. "You really have to keep that initial hunger that made some of your first songs your best songs. You have to keep that fire in the belly."

 

10. Pink

 

"'Heartbreak is a Motherf*cker' is what I originally wanted to name the album," laughed Pink during an interview with Billboard last year when asked about her 2008 release, which was inspired by her split from motocross star Carey Hart. "But this album is not all about that. There is fun happening, too, and that's why I named it 'Funhouse' in the end." The set proved positive in more ways that one; it produced her first solo Hot 100 No. 1, "So What."

Who'll Lead Record Sales, Susan Boyle or Taylor Swift?

 

 

Could Susan Boyle dethrone current queen Taylor Swift, currently at the top of 2009's album-sales charts?

 

With her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, shaking up the industry and selling like hotcakes – it's already sold 1.8 million units since launching in the U.S. on Nov. 24 – Boyle, 48, is poised to surpass the 2.7 million copies of Fearless that Swift, 20, has sold this year. (Since its release in November 2008, Fearless has sold a total of 4.8 million units.)

 

According to Billboard, Boyle – who has held the No. 1 sales spot for the past three weeks – stands a good chance of ruling the music roost if her strong sales hold up for the next couple of weeks.

 

Of course, Swift probably would be just fine without yet another addition to her many laurels this year – such as the eight Grammy nominations, five AMA awards, and sweeping the Country Music Association Awards.

 

As for overall sales this week, Andrea Bocelli’s My Christmas followed Boyle to take the No. 2 spot on the sales chart, followed by the third-place second soundtrack to the Fox TV hit Glee. Then came Swift's Fearless (No. 4), and, in descending order, Carrie Underwood's Play On, Lady Gaga's The Fame and Chris Brown's Graffiti (No. 7).

Syco/Columbia’s version of Santa Claus, Susan Boyle, continues her scorched earth policy, racking up another 659k sales, sending I Dreamed a Dream past the 2.5 million sales mark in the U.S., as she picks up steam in her quest to unseat Taylor Swift’s Fearless as the year’s top-selling album. It’s her fourth consecutive week at #1.

 

J/RMG’s Alicia Keys is the week’s top debut, with a nifty total of 406k for her new Element of Freedom album, good enough to debut at #2 behind the Boyle bandwagon.

 

Keys bumps Decca’s Andrea Bocelli holiday album, My Christmas, from #2, though the Italian tenor adds another 385k into his coffers, at #3. The aforementioned Swift logs in with another 230k, while 19/Arista Nashville’s Carrie Underwood rounds out the Top 5 with 159k.

 

Star Trak/Interscope blue-eyed soul man Robin Thicke’s Sex Therapy is the only other Top 10 bow at #9, while Reprise’s Michael Buble (#6), Interscope’s Lady Gaga (#7 with the deluxe version of Fame and #12 for her stand-alone Fame Monster EP), Island/IDJ’s Justin Bieber (#8) and Epic’s Michael Jackson This Is It album (#10) round out the top of the chart.

It's not really that big of a deal. With or without some dumb sales title, Taylor Swift has had an AMAZING year. She keeps passing everyone's expectations. She's accomplished so many things, that little things like that don't matter.

Taylor Swift to Perform and Present at Grammys

 

Taylor Swift, whose eight Grammy nominations are second only to Beyoncé's 10, will be a performer and presenter at 52nd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 31, an inside source tells PEOPLE.

 

The 20-year-old practically stole the show at the Grammys last February by performing a duet with Miley Cyrus of the song "Fifteen," featured on Taylor's album Fearless.

 

That album has since gone five times platinum, picked up a slew of industry awards, and is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Country Album at the upcoming Grammys.

 

Still unclear: whether Swift would be open to doing a duet with Kanye West on her smash hit "You Belong With Me."

For weeks it looked like Susan Boyle might pull a Hail Mary pass, and beat out Taylor Swift as the year’s top album seller at the very last minute. But in a photo finish finale, Swift pulled ahead, selling 3,216,000 copies of her “Fearless” CD, to 3,103,000 of Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream.”

 

That makes “Fearless” the top selling disc of 2009 to Boyle’s No. 2.

 

Then again, Boyle did best Swift in one key arena: physical sales. She’s sold 3 million to Taylor’s 2.8 mil in that ancient realm. That’s a telling measure of the age of Boyle’s buyers. Only 100,000 of them downloaded the disc, a slimmer slice of the overall amount than most any other star in these iPod-mad days.

 

Also, the elder singer has some extra momentum on her side: She’s still this week’s No. 1 seller. Which means she has a shot to catch up to Swift in overall sales in the months to come. But to do so, she’d have to rack up another several million units; “Fearless” recently pushed past the 5 mil mark for its total figure.

 

Here’s a look at the final Top Ten sellers during the calendar year of 2009, according to Neilsen/SoundScan. (Total sales may well be higher, if the album came out before ’09).

Early leader Beyonce didn’t get the ultimate Grammy for Album of the Year. Neither did the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga or the Dave Matthews Band. Yup, it turned out to be Taylor Swift’s night, once again. As Paul Grein predicted, the Kings of Leon completed their journey from way outside to the mainstream, getting Record of the Year for the powerful and durable anthem, “Use Somebody.” And not even Kanye would take issue with that. Here’s a selected rundown of the victors:

Taylor Swift is only 20 years old, but she's already won four Grammy Awards, was the youngest person to ever be named the CMA Entertainer of the Year, stars in the upcoming flick "Valentine's Day," and just dropped $2 million on a swanky 4,062-square-foot penthouse in Nashville, Tennessee.

 

"I'm so excited," Taylor tells In Touch Weekly of her luxurious new home in the 18-story Adelicia building, which features 3 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and a state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen. Not bad for a girl who grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania!

 

When her tour for Fearless winds down in June, Swift says she's looking forward to decorating her new pad in a "quirky, whimsical style." Of course, she already has plenty of ideas up her sleeve.

"It's going to be my fantasy world," she revealed in Rolling Stone. "The ceiling of my living room is painted like the night sky. There's a pond in the living room ... They're delivering a human-size birdcage, which I'll put a brass telescope in."

Taylor Swift breaks yet another record

 

'FEARLESS' FIVE: Lady Antebellum claims Greatest Gainer honors at its home format, as "American Honey" jumps 10-8 on Country Songs. Two notches lower, Taylor Swift achieves a first in the chart's 66-year history.

 

Swift lifts 12-10 with the title cut from "Fearless," which becomes the album's fifth top 10 on Country Songs. Having banked five top 10s from her self-titled debut album, Swift is the first solo female to collect five top 10s on the chart from each of her first two albums.

 

Only two other acts have previously managed the feat. Brooks & Dunn notched five top 10s each from "Brand New Man" and "Hard Workin' Man" (1991-94), and Dixie Chicks hatched five top 10s from their major label debut "Wide Open Spaces" and six from "Fly" (1998-2002).

Taylor Swift’s six-times-Platinum FEARLESS album was officially recognized as the Most Awarded Album in the History of Country Music last night at a private dinner in Nashville.

 

FEARLESS is the only album in history to win the all-genre Album of The Year GRAMMY, plus Country Album of the Year Awards from the GRAMMYs, the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.

 

Representatives from NARAS, The American Music Awards, The Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music all joined Big Machine Records Group President/CEO Scott Borchetta for an unprecedented group presentation honoring Taylor for her achievement.

 

FEARLESS, released in 2008, has won every album award in the country music genre, and was named all-genre Album of the Year at the 2010 GRAMMY Awards. Taylor, who turned 20 in December, was the youngest artist in history to win the music industry’s coveted top prize and she is also the award’s first-ever solo female country winner, and the first solo female winner in more than a decade. Taylor wrote or co-wrote every song on FEARLESS.

 

“We tend to always look forward when it comes to Taylor, but tonight it was time to stop for a moment and look back on one of the most successful music works of all time,” said Scott Borchetta of the historic evening. “The 18 months of our lives known as the ‘Fearless’ era have been history-making, euphoric and triumphant. This week also marks Taylor’s 10th consecutive Top 10 Country single, and with that she becomes the only female artist in the 66 year history of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart to score at least five Top 10s apiece from her first two major album releases.
