Oprah: Houston interview is best she's ever done

 

 

 

CHICAGO (AP) -- Talk show host Oprah Winfrey calls her upcoming sit-down with singer Whitney Houston "the best interview I've ever done."

 

Winfrey said Monday in comments provided to The Associated Press by Harpo Productions that she "can't think of a moment, ever, when I had a stronger connection to the person I was interviewing."

 

According to Harpo Productions, Houston's daughter and producer Clive Davis attended the interview.

 

Houston also is to perform her new song "I Didn't Know My Own Strength."

 

The 46-year-old superstar hasn't done a major TV interview since 2002, when she addressed questions about her drug use from ABC's Diane Sawyer.

 

Winfrey kicks off the 24th season of Chicago-based "The Oprah Winfrey Show" with the two-part interview with Houston on Sept. 14 and 15.

The diva's back…and she's been welcomed with open arms. Guess they always will love her.

I Look To You, Whitney Houston's first new Arista/RMG studio album of original material in seven years, debuts at #1 on this week's HITS sales chart, with a total topping 300k. Her last album (aside from a 2003 Christmas release), Just Whitney, debuted at #9 with 205k back in 2002.

 

Hollywood's Miley Cyrus, last week's #2 after her Wal-Mart exclusive album, The Time of Our Lives, went on sale before release date, remains in the same spot, with a total of 162k, a whopping 154% increase, thanks to the runaway smash, "Party in the U.S.A."

 

Atlantic R&B smoothie Trey Songz is the week's other Top 5 debut, nestling in at #3 with 136k for Ready, while Epic's Chevelle (#7) and J/RMG's Pitbull (# are the other Top 10 newcomers.

 

Epic's late superstar Michael Jackson continues to hold down a pair of Top 10 slots, with Number Ones at #4 and Thriller at #9, the latter up another 59%.

 

Last week's topper, Universal Republic's Internet-fueled chanteuse Colbie Caillat, drops to #5, with RCA/RMG's Kings of Leon (#6) and Taylor Swift's Big Machine perennial (#10) rounding out the top echelon.

 

Silver Arrow/Megaforce/RED's Black Crowes lead the group of Top 50 bows, along with RCA Nashville's Chris Young (#18), Reprise's The Used (#19), Psychopathic's Insane Clown Posse (#25) and legendary rocker John Fogerty's Blue Ridge Rangers Ride Again on Verve Forecast. (#27).

 

Arista Nashville's Brad Paisley returns to the Top 50 at #42, along with Michael Jackson's Definitive Collection on Motown (#43), BNA/RCA Nashville's Kenny Chesney Greatest Hits II and Big Machine's Taylor Swift debut.

 

Double-digit gainers include Mercury Nashville's Sugarland with Love on the Inside (#45-36, +19%), Atlantic's Zac Brown Band (#18-12, +18%) and Capitol Nashville's Lady Antebellum (#44-37, +15%).

 

This week's release schedule includes Jay-Z's Roc Nation/Atlantic bow, The Blueprint 3, at the top of the list, followed by Columbia's Boys Like Girls, IceH20/EMM's Raekwon, ATO's Rodrigo Y Gabriela and Phish, Virgin's Saosin and A Fine Frenzy, Epic's Howie Day and Hollywood's Marie Digby.

 

Oh yeah, we almost forgot… EMI is reissuing the entire catalog of a little group called The Beatles. Perhaps you've heard of 'em?

Whitney Houston in at No. 1 with 300K-Plus

Whitney Houston makes a triumphant return to the album charts this week at No. 1 in her debut week. Her album, "I Look to You," sold more than 300,000 copies.

 

The final count is in, and hitsdailydouble reports a whopping 301,000 copies sold.

 

And just think: Next Monday and Tuesday, Whitney holds court on "Oprah" for two hours total. She's on her way to 1 million in sales in less than a month. That's quite an achievement for a singer who hasn't had a new release in seven years, was considered "washed up" by gossip naysayers.

 

Houston can be proud of herself for what she's done to recover from her personal problems. And then, of course, there's Clive Davis, Larry Jackson, Richard Palmese and co. at Arista Records, Whitney's trusted aide de camp Lynn Volkmann, sister-in-law Pat Houston and mom Cissy. It takes a village, after all. Now just think what Clive's pre-Grammy dinner will be like this year!

 

Whitney has hits galore on "I Look to You," but I still say, when they release Leon Russell's "A Song for You," it will trigger an avalanche.

 

Whitney has the jump on Mariah Carey, whose own new album is coming on Sept. 29 with lots of hits included. It's too bad there aren't any record stores anymore! What with the Beatles action and these ladies, there would certainly be traffic!

Whitney Houston Debuts At No 1 On Billboard

 

 

 

 

 

Like a true diva, Whitney Houston returns to the Billboard 200 in grand style. "I Look To You" becomes Houston's fourth No. 1 album on the chart, debuting with 305,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

 

 

 

It's by far Houston's best opening sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. Her previous best opening week since that year came when 2002's "Just Whitney" bowed at No. 9 in the thick of the Christmas holiday shopping season with 205,000.

 

 

 

"I Look To You" is also the singer's first chart-topper since the Houston-fueled "The Bodyguard" soundtrack spent 20 weeks at No. 1 in 1993. "Look" and "Bodyguard" are joined by Houston's two previous toppers: her self-titled set in 1986, and her 1987 sophomore set, "Whitney." The latter was also the first album from a woman to debut at No. 1, which it did did on the Billboard 200 chart dated June 27, 1987.

 

 

 

In addition to Houston's return, five other new albums grace the top 10 of the Billboard 200. Trey Songz's "Ready" is the second-biggest bow of the week, starting at No. 3 with 131,000, while rap act Insane Clown Posse captures its second top 10 album as "Bang! Pow! Boom!" crashes in at No. 4 with 50,000. Rock band Chevelle sees its "Sci-Fi Crimes" effort enter at No. 6 with 46,000, while Pitbull's "Rebelution" starts at No. 8 with 41,000. Rounding out the top 10's new entries is the Used's "Artwork," which debuts at No. 10 with 35,000.

 

 

 

Miley Cyrus' "The Time Of Our Lives" EP scoots up one spot to No. 2 with 153,000 (up 146%) after its first full week of sales. It debuted last week with just three days of sales after it hit stores on Friday, Aug. 28 -- three days earlier than expected.

 

 

 

Last week's No. 1, Colbie Caillat's "Breakthrough," falls to No. 5 with 47,000 (down 56%), while Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" slips three rungs to No. 7 with 45,000 (down 14%). Taylor Swift's "Fearless" continues its remarkable chart run, holding at No. 9 with 35,000 (up 4%).

 

 

 

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 6) totaled 6.29 million units, up 8% compared to the sum last week (5.82 million) and down 7% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (6.75 million). Year to date album sales stand at 237.4 million, down 14% compared to the same total at this point last year (277.6 million).

Whitney Houston mirrors her Billboard 200 success with a No. 1 debut on European Top 100 Albums with her comeback set "I Look To You" (Arista/RCA/Sony Music Entertainment). There's also a new champion on European Hot 100 Singles, where David Guetta scores his second No. 1 in less than two months with "Sexy Chick" (Gum/Positiva/Virgin/EMI), featuring Akon.

 

Houston was last on the pan-European survey at the end of 2007 with Arista's "Ultimate Collection," which reached No. 10. The 2002 ballads retrospective "Love, Whitney" reached only No. 44, while 2000's "The Greatest Hits" made No.2. Houston's last studio album, 1998's "My Love Is Your Love," reached No. 1 during an epic 67-week run on the European survey, and was certified for shipments of three million units across the region. "I Look To You" posts best-selling starts in Germany and Italy, other arrivals including No. 2 in Sweden and No. 3 in France. The set is out in the U.K. on Oct. 19.
