But the similarity is striking truly. Glad they took notes all these past 7 years. It sure looks very nice and usable as long as you don'T have more than 10 windows of one application open.

 

What if tho I'd have like 500 pics from men@play open at the same time? Would Aero Peek crash? You betcha!

At least it's easier to navigate within multiple windows of one application than on a Mac. That drives me crazy not being able to tab so freely! And some of us don't need 500 windows of men@play open at one time to do our business.

Windows 7 Will Not Need A Fancy Video Card For Aero

Windows 7's new WARP system can run Direct3D 10 and 10.1 on the CPU, doing away with the need for a hardware 3D accelerator in some circumstances

 

It turns out that Intel isn't the only company that's looking at performing Direct3D in software; Microsoft has just announced that it's also planning to introduce a new feature called WARP in Windows 7 that allows you to run Direct3D 10 and 10.1 on the CPU.

 

In what could be seen as an easy answer to the Vista-capable debacle, where there was some confusion as to what 3D graphics hardware you specifically needed to run Windows Vista's Aero interface, Microsoft has introduced what it calls a 'fully conformant software rasterizer' called WARP (Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform) 10, which does away with the need for a dedicated hardware 3D accelerator altogether.

 

Microsoft details the new feature in this document on MSDN, in which the company says that WARP 10 will support all the features and precision requirements of Direct3D 10 and 10.1. The feature also supports up to 8x multi-sampled anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and all optional texture formats. The minimum CPU spec needed is just a simple 800MHz CPU, and it doesn't even need MMX or SSE, although Microsoft says that WARP 10 will work much quicker on multi-core CPUs with SSE 4.1.

 

Of course, software rendering on a single desktop CPU isn't going to be able to compete with decent dedicated 3D graphics cards when it comes to high-end games, but Microsoft has released some interesting benchmarks that show the system to be quicker than Intel's current integrated DirectX 10 graphics. Running Crysis at 800 x 600 with the lowest quality settings, an eight-core Core i7 system managed an average frame rate of 7.36fps, compared with 5.17fps from Intel's DirectX 10 integrated graphics.

 

Of course, this low level of performance isn't going to threaten ATI and Nvidia in the world of PC gaming, but it could mean that Windows 7's 3D desktop interface will now be accessible to everyone, whatever graphics card they own.

 

Microsoft says that the technology is also targeted at casual games, explaining that 'the majority of the best selling game titles for Windows are either simulations or casual games, neither of which requires high performance graphics, but both styles of games greatly benefit from modern shader based graphics and the ability to scale on hardware if present.' Microsoft also points out that the technology could be useful for 'emulators and virtual environments that are attempting to display advanced 3D graphics.'

I think Microsoft really are improving on Windows now. The problem is Apple isn't sleeping either. I love competition, tho since also Apple needs a proper kick in the butt to be innovative again.

Well I think this is supposed to basically be a better version of Vista, so maybe I can upgrade from XP some day soon.

Out of the box, everything looks too big. But I've personalized my settings so that's pretty much fine now. I don't like how IE8 is not rendering webpages properly so I have to keep using compatability view. I'd rather have had IE7.

 

And also I love WMP but I can't get it in mini mode so I can control it from the taskbar I hope they fix that so it can be added as a toolbar on the taskbar.

Just wondering if anyone had any feedback on the Beta builds. I've been using build 7077 for a while now and I must say, the operating system is running incredibly smooth, especially since I'm only running on 1GB of RAM and a 128MB video card. Aero is working nicely and it seems as if all the bugs have been sorted out. All of my drivers were already installed once setup was complete and and they've all been working flawlessly. Also, startup is super fast--just abou the same time as XP (or maybe a tad bit faster!). And all my software is running great. AND for the first time, I can run Adobe Premiere AND Photosop at the SAME TIME! How cool is that!?

 

I think I now have a new favorite OS.

Thought I'd bring this topic back to life. My university has a MSDN Alliance program with Microsoft so last night I downloaded the final version of Windows 7 Professional. It's been running ever-so-smoothly and it verry prety too.

 

The launch is next month... anyone planning on getting 7??

I've already got it on one of my machines at work. And it does run quite fast. Which I was able to use it but we haven't moved to Exchange 2007 so I can't do all my work on it yet.

It's definitely faster than Vista but I don't like the taskbar/dock thingy. It's not as sleek as one would want it to be. But overall, quite happy with it
