I don't know about any of you, but I found this really interesting. :o

It sounds like Microsoft is taking a big leap forward. I can honestly say I'm really excited about it! :w00t:

Windows Seven: Facts and Speculations

Its no secret that Microsoft has already begun work on the next version of Windows, Windows 7 (formerly, Windows Vienna). Little is known about, since Microsoft is keeping mum on it, lest it should repeat the disaster that was Vista (or rather Longhorn's) development cycle. Let's take a look at what we know so far about Windows 7.

1. It will be released in late 2009 - This is perhaps the only solid fact that we know about Windows 7. Other than Windows Vista, all previous Windows versions have been released within at least 3 years of each other, so with Vista's debut in January 2007 we can safely assume Windows 7 so be in stores by late 2009 (or at the latest early 2010).

2. It will be a minor release: According to Microsoft, every other release of Windows will be a major update, therefore, since Windows Vista was a major release, Windows 7 is set to be minor update. However there is still some chance that Windows 7 will be a major release. Firstly it bears a whole new version number, secondly since Windows Vista was largely a disappointing release, Microsoft might be compelled to make the next version much more interesting.

3. There will be both 32-bit and 64-bit versions: Although the official word so far is that Windows 7 will be 64 bit, it should be noted that when Windows XP was released, Windows Longhorn was planned to be a 64-bit version only. Since most of the PCs in existence today are 32-bit, with so signs of a radical shift to 64-bit anytime soon, Windows 7 should be released in both 32-bit versions.

4. There will be a new UI component: When Microsoft first drew up plans for Windows 7 (back when it was codenamed Blackcomb), there were rumors that the current UI will be replaced with an entirely new one, with some reference to a sort of radial-dial. Where are no chances for a complete overhaul of the current interface, MIcrosoft has been working on several new UI ideas, some of which may slip into Windows 7. Indeed, this might be a way to transition us from the current UI to the new one in future WIndows releases.

5. Hypervisor: Microsoft is currently working on a new hypervisor system codenamed "Viridian" with OS integration at the lowest level, and already Windows Vista includes extensions to boost performance when running on top of the Viridian hypervisor. We can expect Windows 7 to have a higher level of interaction with Viridian.

It can be safely assumed that all current bundled applications will be updated, some more than others, below are some speculations.

1. Internet Explorer 9: This is an easy guess, IE7 is out already and IE8 is set to be released in mid-2008, so we can fully expect IE9 to ship with Windows 7. Internet Explorer 7 was a rather rushed release, as Microsoft tried to stem the growth of Mozilla Firefox, and most of its new additions (such as tabs) seem flaky at times. Therefore we can expect IE8 to be a solid release, which, rather than introducing new features, improves the current feature-set, and makes the UI much more responsive. This seems to make Internet Explorer 9 a prime candidate for new and innovative features.

2.Windows Media Player/Windows Media Center: Its a given that new versions of WMP always make it into new Windows releases, and Windows Media Center are also expected to be a regular bundled application with all new versions of Windows. We can expect WMP12 and WMC Fiji with Windows Vista Service Pack 1, and future versions to be included in Windows 7.

3. Virtual Desktops: Mac OSX already has it, and Linux had it for a long time, so it would only make sense that Microsoft will be implementing virtual desktops into Windows 7.

4. System Restore: With OSX Leopard's Time Machine making such an impression with the general public, it can be expected that Windows 7 will improve upon its own backup tool.

5. Paint.NET: So far this has been an independent project that was under the guidance of Microsoft, but Microsoft has always acknowledged that Paint.NET with one day replace the current 'Paint' application in Windows.

There is also a slight possibility that Microsoft will be integrating Windows Live services much more strongly into Windows 7, although it might raise allegations of anti-competitive business strategies. But there might be certain unique Live services that make it into Windows 7, such as Live Drive. Other Microsoft services such as MSN Soapbox might also be a significant part of applications such as Windows Media Center.

It is still too early to tell what shape Windows 7 may take, but we can hope that the recent wave of innovations we have been seeing from Microsoft will carry on into the next two years.

I'll try and stay positive about this but if it's anything like some of their past efforts I'm not going to get too excited about it. Windows ME and Vista have had major issues. I have XP Pro, which is actually good even though it's kind of plain looking, but it's reliable. What I hate is that you really don't have much of a choice in PC operatings systems. You pretty much have to buy Microsoft so they have all the control. It's Microsoft, Apple and Linux...THAT'S IT! Ninety percent of computers have Windows installed. I wish there were more options. :angry2:

Ok, I'll get off of my soapbox now and try and stay positve and geeky like dear E! :giggle:

After what happened with Vista, 7 seems to be kinda interesting. But that's what everyone fel with Vista, too. So I'll not get too optimistic with 7 at this point. Let more news come out and if MS clears out the bugs before it is launched, then it would be a good one and more reliable than Vista. Except the security and a minor bug probs, I still think XP to be Microsoft's best release yet. But I'm more leaning towards Mac as my my institute's revampinging half of the computers in the lab and purchasing Apple computers now. They say its far more reliable. After using it, I also kinda like Mac now. I might consider getting myself a MacPro in the future. But with Vista's SP1, I dont know if it would of any help... I mean, Vista is cool-looking and all, but the functionality creeps in and after using XP for about seven years now, I dont know if I'll pop the Vista disc again in my computers. But these are just my thoughts :giggle:

I haven't use Vista, personally. But, according to many people I know, Vista is quite disappointing performance-wise. I think Microsoft is really going to start taking things into account from the faulties. I'm sure they'll break through with something eventually... we'll just see if Windows 7 is the one to crack the ice. Hopefully, it will be. :)

The article said the IE7 was a rushed release. I've been using it ever since it came out, and I've had absolutely not issues with it. In my own opinion, it's pretty good. Others I know who use it like it too. So, now I'm all excited about IE8. :D

Most of these operating systems are like new car models when they come out. It's best if possible to not buy the first redesigns that come out. Mostly because they have usually not worked all the bugs out. Down the line, they correct these things and everything's fine. The thing that makes me mad about Vista is that the memory and processor requirements that they suggest are for an expensive PC, yet they put this system on the mid price and low end models that most people buy. Somehow I think there is a conspiracy between Microsoft, Intel and the PC makers since they want to force you to buy a new PC. :angry2:

I don`t mind Vista either...My computer is still pretty new (got it in July) so I don`t think I`ll upgrade anytime soon.

It has worked perfectly for me, for like ever!

I guess the other people, dont appreciate Vista so Vista just goes "Well fine, if you dont like me, i will treat you badly with your computer" hahaha!

Hmm thats interesting, i looed at the pictures of the new OS, and it loods EXACTLY like my 'Vista'?

Thats weird ..

 Exactly my point

Did MS really do anything other than some tweaks and tunings to Vista for the new OS?? I think not. As mentioned in the pics, the strings are totally carried over from Vista (and I am not pleased with it) but in some weird way, it does look a bit different. I don't know where but it does

I wonder what differences it would have in the three versions : Ultimate, Business and Home.

My thoughts exactly. that's why I still have XP Pro.

Couldn't agree more...

I just ordered a new pc for my office and the first option I clicked was the downgrade from Vista to XP...

Vista just sucks...

I had it on one of my 3 desktop computers at home and it didn't take long before I reformated the hard drive and installed XP Pro... Just my laptop is still running on Vista because I still hadn't the time to reformat the hard drive but when I find the time Vista must make place for good old XP Pro.

Wonder what the new Windows, which will become available in 2010 will be like, hope that it's a good OS like XP pro or W2K, if it again like Vista I think i'm going to be a Mac user or take the Linux stuff or something like that.

I think the first Vista sucked crap, but the SP1 is pretty good. I've been using it for almost two months, and I haven't had any problems with my computer. If I had any problems, it was only because my Internet Service Provider was being a crapbag. I love Vista, it rocks my socks! :cheer: Edited by celinerific

"Yeah it's called Mojave."

But it's REALLY Vista.
