Black Kitten Posted April 14, 2008 at 09:08 AM Posted April 14, 2008 at 09:08 AM (edited) ok people this is clearly a flop. even here in the philippines, the album is nowhere in the charts, though the Feedback video is on a heavy rotation everyday here. huge posters of Discipline are present in all record shops. the thing is, this is a solid album. the interludes are relevant to each of the songs. the album is futuristic. the only reason i see why this album failed to match her previous sales is, she kept on whispering her songs. you can't even hear her voice as it is devoured by the backing vocals completely. people are tired of that style. and Discipline has no theme at all. but i think this is her best album since Velvet Rope. very disco friendly. and im very glad that nobody hates janet here. LikeTheRiverJordan Posted April 18, 2008 at 12:59 PM Posted April 18, 2008 at 12:59 PM Since I'm a massive MJ fan I have sort of supported Janets career and have seen her in concert back in the earlier days and I thought she was pretty amazing at what she does, the last album of Janet's that I bought was All For You ... and I HATED it. I hated it so much that I could barely admit it because I wanted to love it so much. What on Earth is the music industry coming to when you have a mainstream artist trying to put across extreme, graphic sexual frustration on an album. "Oh, damn, I didn't get to cum yet..." ... *puke* ... Who even TOLD her that that was a good idea?!? It's not cute, it's not funny and unless you're a male between the age of 15-30, it's not even sexy. It's rank, and unnecessary. I sort of lost a bit of respect for her after that. I was a bit excited when Damita Jo came out and actually I still really quite like it (but not enough to buy it, tbh, I downloaded it)... The thing that frustrates me about Janet Jackson is the fact that you get excited by the prospect of having 19-20something tracks on an album and you get it home and realise a dozen of them are stupid interludes about random crap that no one cares about (Damita Jo: "I love anguilla its my favourite island" ... it's just like... ok??? and whats your point???) and only about 5 and a half decent songs IF that... I thought Damita Jo was the best out of a bad batch of the past 5 albums ... although, this is a testament to the fact that even THAT isn't so great because I can only remember the title of one song (Strawberry Bounce) off hand. The last CD 20. y.o was bought for me for my 23rd bday gift and it was OK. I've listened to it a couple times and there are a few songs that I quite like... but give up that airy, whispery, sexual crap.... it puts me to sleep!!! And it doesn't really show off her voice. If anyone remembers songs like, "Scream" (AMAZING Janet Vocals), songs from Velvet Rope.... great vocals... Blah... Anyway, I previewed a lot of songs from Discipline on itunes and bought two and I skip them each time they come on cos they're that boring. It's all whispery BS talking about "I'm a bad girl, spank me" etc etc... BORING!!!!!!! ... She's 40 yrs old, if sex isn't even selling for her, she really needs to take a good look at herself. The other frustrating thing about Janet is the fact that she has this ridiculous hypocritical act... Like for instance on Tyra she was so forthcoming about her sex life and will talk about how she and JD swing from chandeliers and stuff (lol, paraphrase) but yet... she seems so abhorrently offended when someone asks if she has plans to marry him, her response: HOW COULD YOU ASK ME THAT! ITS PERSONAL!!!! Well... er... WHAT??? And she has this sweet cute, shy act and... that's all it is - it's a stupid act... It makes me angry because I really dislike people who's actions don't correspond with the way they talk themselves up. Maybe this is why I love Celine and Mariah so much -- not so much talk about sex and distasteful BS conversation during interviews. They actually correspond with what they say, and really seem to care about their image and how that may project on to young people or the general public. So... basically, I don't recommend Discipline for anyone. Black Kitten Posted April 18, 2008 at 02:44 PM Posted April 18, 2008 at 02:44 PM LikeTheRiverJordan, i wholeheartedly agree with you! (before i start, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!) ok, like you, i am a huge fan of Michael Jackson and have a pretty huge collection of his albums. but talking about janet, i do believe she really has the talent that seems to be overshadowed by her image. during her debut album JANET JACKSON (which is commonly overlooked by people) and DREAM STREET, she is thirsty of people's attention (why buy her albums when we have madonna and cindy lauper). she then returned full force, we saw the independent Ms. Jackson when she released her breakthrough CONTROL. every song is a masterpiece. she declared that she's not the girl she used to be and got a LOTS OF CONTROL. the album remains one of the most influencial albums in history. then in 1989, we saw the society concious janet in RHYTHM NATION 1814. this record showed how she can break the barriers between all races. this concept album remains my personal favorite record of hers. the mega successful singles are all slices of crystal pop glory. MISS YOU MUCH, ESCAPADE, RHYTHM NATION, ALRIGHT, BLACK CAT, COME BACK TO ME & LOVE WILL NEVER DO (WITHOUT YOU) all entered the top 5 in the US. the album became the biggest selling album in 1990. the tour remains the most successful debut tour by any artist in history. sadly, after this era, everything had gone downhill for her. janet. was the start of the whisper-singing thing. this is still a good album and became her best seller. she talked about racism and of course, love. but to be honest, am not into this album. then the Velvet Rope was released. janet talked about sex, phone sex, bondage, and all those kinky themes, women abuse and depression. this is somehow a return to form for her IN A WAY. a classic janet with a more rnb sound and sexy image. then she welcomed the new millennium with ALL FOR YOU which became her first album with a Parental Advisory label due to its strong language and sexual theme. there's not much to talk about from this album. she then released DAMITA JO which she publicized as the sequel to ALL FOR YOU. oh dear lord what the heck happened to the once well respected woman in the industry?! enough! when she released 20 Y.O., i was reluctant to buy it as i am very tired of hearing her whispers on each and every songs. but i was surprised. of course we can't have a janet album without those whispers, but the good thing is, she used it in a good way this time. she talked about enjoying life as it is & true love. but again, it flopped. with discipline, this album is good when compared to ALL FOR YOU & DAMITA JO, but pales in comparison to her classics. why talk about a 7 inches c**k in the first place LOL but i enjoy this album. janet is a great artist in her own ways. i am her fan, no matter what. i love her so much. LikeTheRiverJordan Posted April 18, 2008 at 03:05 PM Posted April 18, 2008 at 03:05 PM I agree with everything that you said, except I have to admit that I think Damita Jo was the best of the last four albums... I love a certain few songs from All For You (Trust A Try, Better Days, Doesn't Really Matter) I am glad that you love Michael as well Quote http://www.justonelung.org - personal website & collective You gave me faith because you believed, I'm everything I am, because you loved me. Black Kitten Posted May 28, 2008 at 11:09 PM Posted May 28, 2008 at 11:09 PM (edited) im really sad about what's happening to discipline's sales. they released Feedback as its lead single, and it fared well, but after Feedback, they released Rock With U, LUV and Can't B Good to radio, and none of these 3 songs entered the top 100! it's really frustating for me as a massive janet fan. i don't think she's as irrelevant as celine, but looking at its sales, it doesn't work that way. this is her lowest selling album since Dream Street in 1984! poor janet. thanks vinny for the sales update. to Ray, i love Rock With U, but Can't B Good and 2nite are my faves from this cd. I like to talk about the music. Who cares about the week sales? Let's enjoy the album!yeah right. since they started to post those crazy number of sales almost everyday, i don't enter the thread as often as before. about 'DISCIPLINE', it could've been much better if she "sing" every note and stop whispering them. she's no mariah and celine to blow huge notes, but i saw her sing her ballads completely live, and she can def. sing! and thank god this album isn't as explicit as Damita Jo and All for You (except Discipline, or Rollercoaster (but it all depends on how you will interpret this song, it has a double meaning). 2nite reminds me of her "Together Again" glory days. Can't B Good is a reminiscent of Michael Jackson's slow jam ballads, Never Letchu Go is Discipline's version of her classic "Any Time, Any Place" or Rhythm Nation 1814's "Come Back to Me". about The 1, Missy did a great job providing the raps. the only songs i usually skip are What's Ur Name (janet stop talking about the new guy in town! you're 42! leave that kind of song to Rihanna!) and Curtains. but they're not that bad. about the bonus dvd (yes i bought the deluxe edition 3 days after i bought the regular version), it's very entertaining to watch the photoshoot for the album's booklet. the recording session is a little awkward since u can't see janet singing there. the behind the video and the rehearsals for "Feedback" is just breathtaking! her belly movements are and her dancers are HOOOOOT!
