"Taking Chances" album - Official Topic

Yup the “One Heart” album is one of my favourites too and I listen to it frequently. “Taking Chances” is definitely a mixed bag for me. I’m still we gutted we got a tour for that album and not ANDHC/OH to be honest. I need to get over it haha.

I must also be one of the few fans who cannot stand “That’s Just The Woman In Me.” An absolute must skip for me. Rene was right to not let her record it all those years until Celine eventually put her foot down haha.

Hahaha I really love TJTWIM! For me one of the highlights of the album! And I was so annoyed they cut it from the tour, while that whole soul medley clearly was conceived for that song!

One song I didn't see much in recent posts is Surprise, Surprise. It's such a shame this wasn't a single. It's one of the better songs on the album and more timeless than SOL. I also love Fade Away, that as a single would have been taking chances alright!

It's a shame we only got a real video for TC. It looked like the start of a trilogy, with the "what's next"... but I guess the tour was next and she didn't have time for more videos. :glare:

I am not hating on OH. I only said it constitutes the first instance where I felt her recording career lacked a clear direction. This is not to say the album is bad. Or that I hate it. I think it is average and I enjoy it from time to time. Some excellent tracks like 'I Drove All Night', 'Naked', 'Reveal', 'Je T'aime Encore'. Plus the vocals were incredible.

In terms of the overall direction though, I think ANDHC deserved a lengthier lifespan. And then I think OH deserved to have new songs only and be promoted accordingly. We would then have a chance to see some interesting single releases like 'Reveal' or 'Naked' that would clearly contribute a lot more to her singles discography than HYEBIL that, at the end of the day, is still another Celine Dion ballad. Besides, that song could have been used to promote ANDHC which links to the point I made above regarding this album and its short commercial cycle.

To me, the last instance when they did things right developing an album was ANDHC. After this, I have serious criticisms.

I think that they should have pushed OH throughout 2004 and release a bunch of singles instead of releasing Miracle and letting OH die. It was such a shame. Reveal and Naked were pure gold in terms of radio friendly material

Maybe the should have recycled Forget Me Not on Miracle :P :giggle: (Which is one of her worst English songs BTW :P )

Funny enough Naked and Revealed have some of the lowest streams on Spotify....

Everyone hates on Forget Me Not and it’s the least-streamed song on OH on Spotify, but I actually quite like it (more than I Know What Love Is, which I consider one of her worst English songs and everyone seems to like for some reason, lol)

I like 'Forget Me Not'. And wish she had done more R&B songs. 'I Know What Love Is' is nice but quite bland lyrically - like most of the album.

Speaking of streams 'Alone' is by far the most streamed song on Spotify from TC. Kind of implies it should have been the second global single.

Yeah, I’m surprised how popular it’s become since the album release. When it was released as the second single in the U.S., it didn’t go anywhere sadly. Just bubbled under at #124, if I remember correctly. Didn’t even enter the Adult Contemporary chart.

For me the order is as follows:

  1. A New Day Has Come
  2. Courage
  3. One Heart
  4. Taking Chances
  5. Loved Me Back To Life - this one does not even feel like a finished album.

I 100% agree with your ranking. “Courage” is definitely the most personal English album she has ever done since “A New Day Has Come”. It’s coherent, solid as a record and very well put together.

I remember being so excited back in late 2019 when I first listened to it, I thought she finally had an English album as personal as her French ones!

Going back to the “Taking Chances” album, does anybody know why in the world the song “The Reason I Go On” is not on streaming platforms?

So I know most of you use spotify here and you can see how many streams each song has. If I've asked before sorry but there isn't a way to do this on apple music right?

So, there was a Celine Dion discography playlist I saw on Spotify that some user made and it shows a version of TC with The Reason I Go On, but it does show the song as unplayable in the U.S., so not sure if some countries are able to play it?

What's strange is I was able to buy it from Itunes some years ago. If I had to guess probably around 2015. I was able to buy that song by itself but the track before it, Map To My Heart, was album only. I don't think The Reason I Go On was uploaded to youtube either. Was that song released on CD ever?

It is included on the Japanese pressing of the album.

I wonder what’s the reason behind that. Knowing how lazy her team has always been, it could be something about the rights of that song or also just somebody’s mistake.

This was the third instance where I felt her recording career lacked a clear direction, after recycling songs for 'One Heart' and then releasing an album of lullabies in 2005 that seemed so out of touch with the contemporary music scene. And things were just as bad with 'Loved Me Back To Life' that was another mixed bag of an album where modern songs clashed with the likes of 'Overjoyed'.

But anyway, it is what it is. Overall, a solid album I'd say.

LMBTL is a very consistent album. One of her most ones actually.

"Overjoyed" is a rnb song, with an orchestra vibe on this version, but it blends perfectly with "incredible", "water and a flame", "breakaway", "didn't know love", "thank you" ( and to some extend with SLS and "save your soul").

They all share these slight vintage rnb roots/vibe along either with an orchestral production or a more stripped base.

LMTL flows very well. Concept was somehow changed along the way but they made a very well blend out of it.

You are all stuck with the fact this album is split in 2 for whatever reason. But actually, production and musical roots are common. Even vocal approaches are consistent.

But on the other side, no word about ANDHC which doesn't make any sense at all.

"Sorry for love" right next after "At last" which is only an exemple.

This has been very common in the fan album reviews ( especially on this forum) I read over the years: what you seems to dislike on an album is worse on another album you like.

This dislike comes from another place.

Depiction from a discography can't be based on different values on each album: one time is the direction, next is the music scene, etc...

I think people are simply don't fond of the concepts - granted never totally assumed - Céline offered ( whether it's lullabies or rnb approach, etc) than the reasons stated.

I do not see the consistency. The overproduced introduction of 'Overjoyed' feels like a wormhole to the past. But each to their own I guess.

And I agree that the song sequence in ANDHC could improve. However, it is clearly the superior album in terms of vocals, melodies, production, lyrics, themes.

LMBTL for me is probably her weakest overall English album if we don’t count “Miracle”, does it have a few gem… sure, but as a whole package it wasn’t great in my opinion. Also, I’ve never been a huge fan of the TC album, I feel it’s a shame because her vocals were great at that time but the songs as a whole, lacked. I really wish we could’ve had the “Courage” album with the vocals of the TC album.

What I like about TC is that Céline and her team really tried and found a direction. That makes the album the most consistent and solid she made at that time since LTAL. ANDHC and OH were kind of a collection of songs put together and that’s it (but some great songs don’t get me wrong). I got the same feeling with Courage which is an album that really has a vibe, an atmosphere. But vocals are not as good as on TC. Edited by jmiracle

I find it strange how people think ANDHC is a random theme, to me it l ties together well and has a theme of Love , joy and fulfillment since becoming a mother.

I also kindly disagree with the description of ANDHC as a collection of songs. There were clear themes of positivity, happiness, fulfilment and motherhood all over it. Edited by LukeD

ANDHC is one of her most consistent and solid English recordings. It does have a clear concept: the joy and happiness of being alive. Cheerful songs, a modern and contemporary sound… When it comes to albums that are “collections of songs”, I’d definitely mention One Heart and Loved Me Back To Life. I’m still quite sad about this latest one, as the original “Water and a Flame” concept would have been way better.

I find One Heart to probably be her most comprehensive pop album in terms of sound and theme. I still think as a whole, it aged better than ANDHC in terms of sound, and still sounds fresh to me. There’s still a running theme of love and positivity throughout the entire album. It’s actually a shame that it didn’t have a longer life, because as a collection, it probably had the most radio friendly songs than any other English album she’s recorded.

Forget Me Not would have fared rather well on AC stations too. Stand By Your Side hit number 17 on AC, which isn’t horrible.

ANDHC, while a great album, it just didn’t age well as a whole for me. Songs like ANDHC, IA, IS have stood the test of time. RIFOY, Rain, Tax, SFL, WTWOLYR, they all sound like a product of their time. Even the arrangement for At Last is very 2002. The album certainly has it’s moment with me, but it isn’t one that I often return to for a listen from beginning to end.

I love both albums, but nobody can tell me “Love Is All We Need” doesn’t sound like a Britney Spears leftover of 2003, that song hasn’t aged well. And though I say that, I still enjoy it and love the song.

“Forget Me Not” for me is one of her most underrated gems even though that’s an unpopular opinion around here LOL.

And speaking of TC album, “right next to the right one” has to be my one least favorite English songs from Celine, I don’t know why it makes me cringe and I have to skip it. It was aged before she touched it.

“Rain, Tax” is my least favorite English song. I want to rip my ears off every time I hear it. Yes, LIAWN now sounds a bit dated. But I still think the rest of the album held up pretty well, and despite LIAWN, the album still flows very well from start to finish.

It’s funny how we all have different tastes, I don’t mind “Skies Of LA”‘until I learned that Celine had no idea what the idea of the song was even about, she thought it was about the beauty of LA instead of the smog and environmental downsides of California. Bless her heart, she thought it was a love letter for LA. :sofunny:

It would have been a perfect song at this years Grammys paying tribute to the California wildfires.

I love the mood of “Skies of LA” and I adore her vocal on it. Right Stewart did such a beautiful job capturing a subdued Celine. Beautiful melody too.
