Dion, Paltrow mingle with the organic at Valentino couture

 

 

PARIS -- Celine Dion and Gwyneth Paltrow added star power to the finale of Paris couture week by gracing the verdant Valentino collection. Meanwhile, Jean Paul Gaultier followed through on his pledge to go fur free, as Elie Saab reached a creative high with inspiration from China.

Here are some highlights from Wednesday's fall-winter 2019 couture displays.

 

VALENTINO IS ORIGINAL

 

Luscious green trees that were installed inside the Valentino venue scraped the ceiling, wafted in fresh air and provided some shade for celebrities Paltrow, Dion, Naomi Campbell and Kristin Scott Thomas as the Paris sun scorched guests.

This season, Pierpaolo Piccioli celebrated the organic: In its literal sense, through floral and bird-shaped embroideries, and figuratively, with ethnic fringes, crystals, gold baubles and sections that seemed to grow out of dresses and headpieces.

It made for a highly original show.

Collar bands that were constructed with beautiful black feathers mixed with long, Renaissance-looking "intarsia" capes.

There was even a loose, pink sequined gown that looked ready for the disco.

It was a diverse show that brimmed with ideas, but one that was sometimes hard to pin down as a whole.

Piccioli included a disclaimer in the program notes: "Trying to explain it all... would be betraying the deepest meaning of the journey."

The standing ovation followed, and as the soundtrack blasted, a smiling Dion mouthed the words, "You make me feel like a beautiful woman."

Amid the rousing applause, all the couture artisans that worked on the collection came out to cheers and hugged the house founder Valentino Garavani, who sat with Paltrow on the front row.

No. It has been said. He was just clarifying who did what and who deserved to be credited for the work done. Before this fashion week people where still putting those creations under Law. Articles finally made it clear who her new team was and Pepe ending it by explaining that some of those looks in Paris streets where for another project with another stylist. End of the story.

The last look (Valentino) was the best look of all but Team Celine didn't post that pic on her social media. At least I haven't seen it! Strange team...

 

And the beautiful "wedding dress", well they posted one of the worst pics of it. We see much nicer ones everywhere else!

It was rather clear from his initial IG post yesterday (post, not story) that he was bitter about other people (ahem, Law) still getting the credit. He has since edited it though.

Paris fashion week with Celine has become kind of like a day at Disneyworld ,it suprises, shocks and amazes you! For me it's always very cool because you can see she is totally into it. Sorry but I don't agree with the people that say that she is into fashion now. She has always been into fashion. She just didn't have the time to focus on it. In her books and in many interviews it was said that when she was on one of her silent days or moments , she was reading about fashion. She always chose her outfits .This has always been a passion for her, We know that when Celine loves someone or something she loves it all the way. She always wants to be the best at everything she does. I remember when she was playing golf, she wanted to be the best golfer. Now that she is focused on it ,she has become a fashion icon. I have also been reading comments like 'What would Rene think about the outfits? Rene wouldn't be happy etc...' This is the man that spent his life being dressed by her, he always said that he didn't know how to match a shirt and a tie. (by the way ,he was known for always being well dressed, why? because of her) Again this is the man that went to huge events with her dressed in a backwards tuxedo, a see through dress, and half naked. He was amazed at how bold she was and is. He would totally be on board with this. She has said in a recent interview that Rene would be so proud of the Loreal deal. I don't consider fashion a threat to her music , I consider it one more of her many talents. Who knows what other talents she will show us? These are things she's always loved but didn't have time to do. What's more she finds ways to incorporate her love of fashion with her love of performing. I'm sure we'll see her ballet in the shows/mv somehow.

She did really well this time round. I loved nearly every outfit, if not all of them in their own way!

 

Nothing seems to knock her down and that’s why I love her! People can say she is thin and she doesn’t care one bit. She has lived with the too thin thing for most her career.

While Céline Dion has had her foot firmly on our necks when it comes to lewks for a while now, during the AW19 Couture season she cranked things up a notch. Hopping carefully on to it with both feet, the icon ground her stiletto heels into the tender, virgin flesh, severed the carotid artery, and left us bleeding out on the cold, hard, Parisian pavement. But while metaphorically we might be dead, figuratively we are living for it (harder, Queen Céline, we are not worthy!).

From plumes of fluttering ostrich feathers on Valentino’s heavy-hitting front row and majestic, billowing ivory silk at Alexandre Vaulthier, right through to an homage to Titanic via fresh-off-the-runway Vetements and a Gucci mini-dress accessorised with the kind of scooter you usually want to kick out from underneath the grown adults that insist on riding them on the morning commute, over the course of the last week, Dion’s ensembles – courtesy of stylist Sydney Lopez – have been more fire than the sizzling temperatures the French capital has been enduring.

The situation calls for only one thing: a definitive guide to each and every look the icon has turned throughout Couture and our verdict, as told through her vast collection of songs. No need to thank us.

 

ALEXANDRE VAUTHIER

Bills – paid. Skin – clear. Wig – snatched. Neck – snapped. There are few words to describe how resplendent and angelic Ms. Dion looks here, so we’re not even going to try.

VERDICT: I’m Your Angel – literally!

 

MIU MIU, PRADA, GUCCI, DIOR!

30 degree heat? “Je ne sais pas,” exclaims Céline (we imagine), reaching to the back of her wardrobe to pull out an OTT shearling camo print coat from Miu Miu’s AW19 collection. To accessorise? Prada boots, a Dior bucket hat, and giant Gucci sunglasses… obviously. A wise woman (read: Cardi B ) once said “A real hoe never gets cold” and it seems that the opposite is true. Legends never get hot.

VERDICT: Immortality (feat. the Bee Gees). It doesn’t quite make sense, but you still love it.

 

OFF-WHITE

Having first made its debut at Off-White, Céline was spotted out and about on the streets of Paris wearing this graffiti-emblazoned blazer and bodysuit combo from Virgil Abloh’s SS20 collection just days later. Had the look even had a chance to cool off after Gigi Hadid strut down the runway in it mere days later? Non. Did Celine give a f***? Also non. NB: No cheap jokes about her ‘forgetting her trousers’ will be tolerated here, dad.

VERDICT: Eyes on Me, because where else would they be?

 

RICHARD QUINN

A dog is not just for Christmas, it’s for Couture too, darling. Ditching the velvet turtleneck from the original AW19 Richard Quinn show, but keeping the latex boots (seriously, is this woman invincible?), the look is just a casual gown to pop to the dog park in. Where did she get them from? Pooch-i obvs.

VERDICT: Tale (tail) As Old As Time, Beauty and the (beautiful) Beast(s){C}

 

IRIS VAN HERPEN

It was a case of an icon meeting an icon when Queen Céline turned up at Iris Van Herpen’s AW19 show wearing one of the pioneering Dutch designers wildly innovative creations. The collection was named Hypnosis – which is pretty apt, given just how transfixed Dion has had us tbh.

VERDICT: Overjoyed (at this lewk).

 

VETEMENTS

Celine will never let go (sorry) of an opportunity to pay tribute to Titanic and, more specifically, her multi-platinum smash hit “My Heart Will Go On” (and who can blame her when, even after 22 years, it slaps so hard?). Having first rocked a Jack and Rose-emblazoned Vetements hoodie back in 2016, Demna came through with the appropriate goods again this season, sending a model wearing an exact replica of the movie’s Heart of the Ocean necklace out onto the runway. Thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean in the end? Well, baby – Celine went down and got it for you.

VERDICT:

 

MIU MIU

As an opener before the Couture shows started, Céline went for a classic hot pink ruffled number at Miu Miu’s Resort 2020 show. That’s right, this was just a warm-up, and it’s already enough for you to get. your. life.

VERDICT: Because You Loved Me. A forever classic.

 

Y/PROJECT

There are few women (or men for that matter) that could pull off a pair of Y/Project’s janties – a garment which clashes a jeans and panties to unique effect, duh! – but Céline proves it is in fact possible. There’s not much more to say: we advise you just drink it all in honey, drink it all in.

VERDICT: Are we Halfway to Heaven, or have we fully arrived?

 

VALENTINO

For her swansong, Céline decided to close Couture week with this stunning Valentino Resort look. Mere seats away from the house’s founder, she almost jumped for joy at the finale. With another season successfully slayed, how can she possibly top it? We’ll be on the edge of our seats in anticipation before the SS20 Couture shows in January next year.

VERDICT: (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. Not exactly what you were expecting, but still pleasantly surprised.

 

GUCCI

SCOOTER, ARE YOU READY? (Yes we are).

VERDICT: I Drove All Night.

 

CHANEL

This is a polite reminder that Ms. Dion is 51. YEARS. OLD. In this beachy Chanel look she could be heading to yoga, or maybe to the boulangerie (that’s French for bakery) to pick up a baguette and cycle by the Seine. Parfait!

VERDICT: Je ne pas just because it’s French and so is Chanel.

 

SCHIAPARELLI

Elbow. Length. Leather. Gloves. In. Forty. Three. Degree. Heat. For her commitment to the fashions, there is no option but to stan.

VERDICT: Taking Chances (at not passing out in the heat).

 

THE ATTICO & KSENIA SCHNAIDER

Feathers were back in a big way at the Couture shows, as seen at Valentino, Givenchy, and Christian Dior – but, just in case you weren’t convinced, Céline put forward a further case for the frou-frou in the second of two feathered lewks. This time, she teamed an Attico top, fluffy heels, and a Fendi bag with Ksenia Schnaider’s viral half-and-half jeans. First Tommy Cash and now Ms. Dion. Seemingly it’s legends only when it comes to the cult Ukrainian designer’s divisive denim wares.

VERDICT: Thank You (no really Céline, thank you).

 

RONALD VAN DER KEMP

For the unseasoned Céline Dion fans out there, you might just think this was an ordinary Ronald Van Der Kemp look that she’s turning. Not only is it Couture, but she’s also wearing mismatched shoes, because why not? This look is also a subtle, campy tribute to the look she wore in 1988 for Eurovision – the year she won, duh. We stan a queen who knows her references.

VERDICT: It’s All Coming Back to Me Now."

Seriously, the entire fashion world is united in their love for her, and Vogue keeps writing about her daily, when she's out and about. If she doesn't get a cover, ageism is really the only way to explain it.
