They could easily have a Unison: Deluxe Edition including the various versions of the title track (remix/with and without rap), Can't Live With You, Can't Live Without You, and Wishful Thinking. Not sure if I'm forgetting anything else, but those would be nice additions to the album for a more celebratory anniversary release. They could even throw on Partout Je Te Vois since it's the original French version of an album track.

 

Certainly, the English versions of the Incognito tracks would also be an amazing addition if they do exist.

Yes, the thing is that not one but two concerts from the Unison Tour were professionally filmed (Winter Garden in Toronto and 10 ans déjà in Montreal). Yet, they won’t remaster any of them…

Celine was already in contract with Sony. So I don't think Celine and René weren't able to stop anything regarding their unique "feeling". It has to refer to Spector's murder condamnation. Americans are afraid of bad publicities.

If you look René biography, Phil was violent (including with Sony friend Dave Platel) and took menaces of death to his friend and Sony repsentent Dave Platel the last day she came in this studio, before she shooting the video of Je sais pas few hours later. And Céline took a month of hiatus (in june 1995) after that session in order to recoverer to this traumatism in vacation in Fidji isle to change the ideas. Since that, the two and Sony always opposed to published the songs she made with Phil. Celine told in 2013, to the sessions was not at all a good memory and at the base, she never spoke anything negative at the base.

 

It's not the same situation then for R Kelly, who she removed the song for the compassion of the victims.

 

I'm convinced they were recorded, but this hasn't been confirmed at all.

 

T|His was what they planned when she signed with CBS in 1986 but it's never happening because Vito make a lot of search to finds songs from all composers and and songwriters after the Eurovision. Also, she spent a year and a half on tour in Quebec (including 42 concerts in Saint-Denis Theater) and she starting to work on the Unison album in debut 1989.

Those would all be nice, but far too much effort to expect from the current team - I was just going for what they could realistically, and most importantly, easily, throw together without much effort!

 

Also, I'd much rather they not remaster the album. The original is perfectly fine as it is, and if they remastered it, they'd just end up brickwalling it and making it another victim of the loudness war.

Celine does not have power to remove things from her album. Even though she has her name on the caviar of the album, she does not own it. Sony does. Sony choose to erase the song because he could have bad repercussions on Céline career. I am pretty sure that Celine shared this point of view. But it's business and when you talk about millions dollars, compassion does not weigh a thing.

I don't say the contrary, but if we could have leak of the songs it means that Celine and René did not own the track otherwise they should have stopped the internet release. They did it in the past and it worked, but not this time ??

 

Plus, René used to embellish the story to turn it into fairy tale : although it's part of the story, we now know that he did not mortgage his house to produce Céline, it was mortgaged long before he met her. He did not made her two first album in a row because he was so sure : he actually asked 50 000 CAD to Trans - Canada boss Denys Bergeron to produce Celine first album. But Bergeron refused : 50 000 CAD but two albums because Christmas album always meet its audience, and it would secure eventual losses.

 

Just like for a first concert ever at the Berthier festival in July 1983, René told everywhere that Céline sang in front of 25 000 people. Berthier festival manager had to release an article in the newspaper to deny this information. Saying that René was a very nice guy and they wished they had so many people but actually, the festival couldn't welcome over 2 000 people. So Celine could not sing in front of 25 000 people

The team confirm himself to this was Celine decision after she saw the documentary Surviving R.Kelly in janurary 2019 and ask her team to contact Sony to removed the song in her discography. This was removed in streaming in 2019 and in physical in 2023. A lot of artists did the same thing with duet with R Kelly, including Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber. But this is not the subject here.

I thought this is the low hanging fruit they could use for a deluxe version of the album. Add some Remixes, one-offs/B-sides, a few unreleased songs, and a live concert in HD and it would be the greatest thing ever!! Only wishful dreaming….

For all the peoples to know the making of this album, in her 35th anniversary, the making was noted in her biography by Georges-Hebert Germain. The self-titled and The colour of my Love making wasn't detailled like in for the Unison in her biography.

 

The search of the songs started in mid-1988 after the Eurovision who she won the contest. The first step to work with David Foster came while she made her INcognito TV special in september 1987, one of the workers in Radio-Canada (CBC in english) was a friend of David and René give her a copy of the Incognito album. He listen the Incognito album and was enchanted by her voice and told to she have the voice to be a international star. Because he was a lot charged with his production with othersartist, when he have a hiatus during summer 1988, he called Rene to ask to see Celine in concert before working with her. This was in a tent in Quebec and Rene wanted to delayed to invited in a concert with a better sound, but David didn't have others days avaliable. During the show, the sono sufferts major problems, but she sing with passion and seduces him and he meets her after the show and manisfest interest to work with her. Her ask them to search songs for her and he was ready to work with her.

 

After the ending of the tour in debut 1989, she started to work on this album with David. Love By Another Name was the first song she recording on the album, following Have a Heart (who she sang in the Juno Awards in 1988). She loving working with him and having fun with David in the studios

 

Andy Goldmark and Christopher Neil was at the suggestion of Vito Luprano. Andy Goldmark was very hard working and repeat all the time the song until he was satisfield, he was a kind person, but very exigent for her. She made only the title-track. This was Celine decision to name this album Unison because for her, this represent all the hard work all the peoples made of this project.

 

In may she took plane to flying for London who she work with Christopher Neil. Unlike David and Andy, Christopher consult Celine about her voice and he give the freedom to put the colours what she wanted in the songs. Where Does My Heart Beat Now was the first song she recording with him. The night she came in the studio, she starting to singing and after she recording the song, Chris to this was perfect. They easy a second take, but didn't have the punch of the first take. So, this used the first take in the final product. All knew (René, Vito and Chris) to this song came very far after the product was finished. She recording The Last to Know the next day, also in one take.

 

After that, she took a pause during the summer after the ending of the sessions with Chris. René was convinced to the product was finished, until Bennie, the boss of Sony Canada told him to refused to released the album and it's missing something on the album. Rene was first angry of Bennie (the first boss of Sony Canada) and wanted to changed the company, but later he realised to Bennie was right. In fall 1989, Bennie left Sony and Paul Burger took his place, and after he listen, he told to it's was good, but missing a strong song for the album he decided to make money to search others songs. Rene realised to Bennie was right and give credit to him. Celine choose to return in London with Christopher Neil to recording others songs in fall 1989. If Love was Out of Question and Any Other Way was the final songs recording on this album in november 1989. After they present the album with the two songs adding, all peoples of Sony was finally satisfied and prepare the released of the album.

 

The 10 songs of the album was the only songs she recording during the Unison album. So the recording was between march and june 1989 with a hiatus of six months and she return in november to recording If Love Is Out of Question and Any Other Way. So this was almost a year of working on this album.

Or were there other tracks that were replaced? Eight tracks is a very short album for the time, particularly given that none of them are that long.

Incognito has only 8 tracks and they planned an English version of it with Unison. So I wouldn't be surprised, if they planned 8 tracks for Unison.

This raises a question for me. They summit the album suring the summer and it's really 8 tracks, like her last french album. Sony Canada put a more money to recording others songs and theses two songs was recording in november 1989, six months after her last session with Chris.

 

Also, depist she promoted the album in her english, all english radios outside Quebec, not playing a lot her songs and in end of june, 95% of the sales off the album was in Quebec. The released in US was in suspense because the sales was not well at all in Engligh Canada. All changes in july 1990 with the meeting of Sony International in Chateau Frontenac, in Quebec city. René insisted to all the peoples of Sony to give the chance to hear Celine singing for the peoples of worldwide. Tommy Mottola was here. She sang Where Does My Heart Beat Now and give a silence of ten seconds and all appluds. Tommy was throw away with her voice and the next day, René meets Tommy and Tommy decides already to prepare the released in US and he made the decision to prepare the promotion of Celine in US.

 

The first step was her first US apparition in Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She sang Where Does My Heart Beat Now who it's was released in radio few days before and she hear the song in radio the first time in a taxi when she arrived in LA and she also visit the Towers Records the next day, who a huge batch of her Unison album in the stores was in sales with a huge picture of her with her name and a huge poster of her in the entry of the store. This song was a huge step of her fame in english Canada and the album started to sell in the english Canada. In june, the album was sell 300 000 in Canada. And in US, the album wasn't a huge hit, with only 300 000 copies sell in US in 1991 at the same time in Canada. Outside Where Does My Heart Now, who it's was became a hit (her first top 10 in Canada, like in US) and was since a classic for her, not others singles of this album have the same impact then Where Does My Heart Beat Now. In US, the album gained more interest while she became a star later in her career.
