Celine's catalog in the US is dead - she only sold 200,000 albums across an 18 month period according to a last update.

 

I wonder if a new (successful) album could change this? Her team must be aware of this and should do something ...

For me neither! I’d be curious to know Madonna’s, Mariah’s, Britney’s, Faith’s, Alanis’ and Shania’s catalog sales...

 

Most of the artist who are enjoying good catalog sales are either on top of the charts now (Pink, Eminem, Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons,...) or dead (Beatles, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Whitney,...)!

US - Soundscan Sales (catalog sales in brackets, across a 16 month period):

 

Mariah Carey - 55.2M (+200K)

Celine Dion - 52.8M (+200K)

Shania Twain - 35M (300K)

Britney Spears - 33.6M (+200K)

 

That doesn't make her numbers good, it just makes everyone's numbers bad. Lol.

The album sold 65,209 copies in the 2016 season and by the time we received the above updated figure, the album had sold 18,480 copies in the 2017 season (6 weeks up to mid-late November 2017) for a total of 83k.

 

So at least 113k of sales in the rest of her catalogue.

It’s really sad becuase if CD’s do anything....they give visibility to an album in stores. I always check out new CD’s then download them....

 

It’s weird as today I packed all my Celine CD’s away as I never use them.... I always use vinyl or my iTunes to listen to her.... I was shocked when I realised my DVD player broke a while ago and that’s the only player I had left for playing CD’s .... I hadn’t noticed as I hadn’t played a single one in a few years! I do listen to them in the car, although I do this less and less and use my phone...

 

It’s a change of the times I guess...

Like I said before, it's a downwards spiral, retailers sell less cds, they offer less cds, costumer will buy even less cd's because of that etc etc etc.

 

You were more likely to buy a cd when you saw it on sale in a shop, just to try and see if you'd really like it, than going through all that trouble of ordering a cd on sale of amazon, where shipping might even be higher than the price of the cd

 

And when you get young people like Kev who don't even play cds anymore, well then they are bound to die a slow death

Last week's albums sales in France:

 

#63 Encore un soir 909 copies sold (TOTAL : 738.336)

#193 Un peu de nous 282 copies sold

#194 D'eux 281 copies sold

#217 On ne change pas 252 copies sold

 

Should Céline release a live CD of her successful tours in France and promote "À vous" as a single, then we would see Encore un soir sell thousands of copies more and get closer to the 800.000 mark. That strategy worked good with Une seule fois (promoted by "Celle qui m'a tout appris") and Sans attendre.

Celine's catalog is almost dead in the USA. Her French albums sell nothing and My Love only served as a killer for All The Way as neither albums appeared on the catalog chart since 2008.

For some reasons, "The Essential" didn't chart on the main albums chart in Australia. I emailed ARIA and they explained me Céline's label had the request for the album to be allowed to chart, which they didn't. Too bad because then the album would have re-entered at #79.
