Beautiful!!!!

I wish it were coming sooner! It would’ve been a great way to keep driving up the sales as we head into the holidays. But I’m thankful that’s coming our way!

What another failure of a reissue..

Awkward three sided album.. so silly.

I had never heard of such a thing, does she have other vinyl releases like that?

I was under the impression that the 3-sided vinyl was the result of the limitations of the media more than anything else. Based on some quick Googling, it seems that a 12", 33 RPM album typically holds 22 minutes per side, or 44 minutes total, and since SSD is ~52 minutes in length, it'd have to run to a third side. Other sources say it can hold 26 minutes per side, but that would have just barely fit all of SSD and may have necessitated lower audio quality. Just a guess...

That’s precisely the reason. Love it or hate it, in order to press the best possible audio quality, they had to split it up over 3 sides.

yeah BUT what they could have done is added some bonus songs on the 4th side... like some demo's or even live version from JCT, SISDA and ONCP from ACDS!

"best audio quality possible"....the audio used for this LP comes from the CD version of the album, not even from the original master. The same goes for the pictures : Sony didn't try to get the original files in their archives, they simply scanned the CD booklet and reprinted it in a large size.

JJ Goldman released not that long ago a LP version of his 1997 album, that didn't make it in vinyl at the time, and as the tracks covered only 3 sides, he decided to give extra material to fill the 4th side with three instrumental versions !

I'm sad not to have the Deluxe tracks on vinyl, but I'm also happy that they're not trying to cram an extra song on each side and likely sacrificing sound quality. Maybe they can release a Record Store Day disc with the extra four tracks. (No, they won't, but I can dream...)

Interesting - not sure where Hoosierito got the tracklist they posted, but seems we don't yet know the final content and if it'll include the bonus tracks or not. Although fitting 20 tracks on a 2-disc vinyl release is not a good idea. I'm also wondering if we'll have a proper vinyl master or if they'll take the shortcut of just bunging the same master as the CD onto wax (also not a good idea). I know which I'd guess...

I found the tracklist on Amazon and Celine Dion's Boutique, I even tried searching for a deluxe vinyl version but didn't find anything:

The songs are quite short so it wouldn't sacrifice sound quality if there was one extra track on each side. I have many vinyls with more minutes per side and they sound great. Five shorter songs is fine. LMBTL had seven on one side and that WAS too much.

I'm really sad those amazing deluxe tracks won't be available on vinyl. The album feels incomplete to me without those tracks. I'm loving every single song on the album (including Soul) so naturally I want them all on vinyl but... I had a feeling they would release standard version. It greatly diminish my joy of buying this vinyl.

Song length is only one component of sound quality in vinyl production, though. The shorter the duration of a side, the louder it can be cut to disc since louder = more space needed. Conversely, the longer the duration, the lower volume it will be by necessity in order to fit on one side, which in turn means standard vinyl pops and clicks become more noticeable. The physical limitations of a vinyl pressing and what the grooves can feasibly accommodate means that even the musical style and instrumentation have a huge impact as well. For example, heavy or strongly panned bass can impact groove depth/width, which in turn impacts the duration that can be accommodated on a side, and can lead to distortion and skipping. A simple piano and vocal track can be much more easily accommodated than a bass-heavy banger, so you could realistically have a longer duration of piano-and-vocal tracks on one side without sacrificing sound quality. A loud, heavily limited/clipped master will mean needing to reduce the level significantly on vinyl, if it's even possible. That's why it's so important to have a master created specifically for vinyl rather than attempting a one-size-fits-all approach, which is usually going to be a bit of a disaster. Even track sequencing has an impact given the significant decrease in speed and real estate as the stylus gets closer to the center of the disc, which adds another challenge and makes louder tracks more problematic and likely to distort if they're sequenced at the end of a side.

Most digital masters today tend to be brickwalled for loudness, minimizing dynamic range (don't get me started!). Pretty sure Courage follows that model, too, and that's not a good recipe for vinyl.

As a quick disclaimer, I am by no means a vinyl mastering expert and I don't mean for any of the above to be definitive or come across as condescending! I just find the process interesting and in particular the variances needed in mastering for a successful and great-sounding pressing. Vinyl's so trendy these days but a lot of the true pressing expertise has been lost given how long it's been since it was the default release format. Not to say that there aren't some great experts out there, but too many releases these days are just the digital files pressed on vinyl, and they so often sound awful.

But then so many buyers are just playing them on their Crosley suitcase player for show, anyway... :)

I've heard that any more than 22 minutes on a side and you begin to compromise sound.

To add 5 songs on each side is not only fine but normal. In the age of when vinyl sounded best, music was formatted for a 10 track album. Not to mention these songs are short.

Question about the above discussion....

So how is a Master recording stored? In what format? It’s something physical right...?

It used to be physical masters on reels or tapes. Nowadays, digital mastering has mostly replaced analog formats, though there are occasions where some artists go the old-school route for the analog sound. Also, record companies typically now have converted their analog masters to digital masters for the sake of preservation.

Sorry to pester, but I’m guessing those reels and tapes would only ever be playable in a recording studio or a special device?

Anyway, a good idea to move to digital. I was shocked when I heard about this Warner Brothers’ fire...and was glad Celine’s music was not lost.

On vinyl? It was never released, I believe. eBay for the CD, I'd say.

So some of my new records arrived today, including Mislead, and it's still sealed from 1993! I'm gonna open it and listen!

I received my vinyl of Courage yesterday and the packaging is quite lovely, especially the 16 page booklet that is included. Since both of the discs in this 2 LP set come as red coloured vinyls, I was already anticipating that the sound quality played back would be less than ideal. I've found that a lot of colour vinyl releases tend to playback with a lot more static and the quality of the vinyl tends to be cheaper overall. It looks pretty though. Although I was surprised to hear a bass sounding type of thud throughout the disc, as the music was playing. It is not super loud or super obvious, but it was indeed distracting from the music and disappointing. I noticed it when I was playing the second disc last night and will have to check later if I can also notice it when I play the first disc. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue with their vinyl set of Courage or perhaps I was lucky to get a defective pressing? :) Edited by Carlo

Since many of us are quarantined right now -- it's the perfect time to break out the Celine Dion vinyl from the 80s.

Eddy Marnay. Celine's crystalline tone. So beautiful.

Yes, I listened to C'est Pour Toi and Melanie again the other day. I love those beautiful songs.

Does anyone know more about Celine and Rene's "breakup" with Eddy before working with Luc? Was it in the MTV driven interview he mentioned how hurt he was by the way they stopped working with him without a conversation? I wondered if Celine always held onto some guilt over that, perhaps, and that influenced the naming of her child.

Just following up on my earlier post above regarding the defect I initially noticed in my vinyl copy of Courage. It seems that both discs were pressed off center, but even more so, disc two is off center. I can see the tone arm swaying back and forth while the disc is playing, and I can hear a low but audible noise in the background. It's most noticeable on "I Will Be Stronger". I was hoping if someone else could confirm if they have noticed the same problem, as I'm wondering if it's just my copy or if the entire run of pressings were made with this defect? You can also notice the edge of the disc is not circular, as it is rotating.

My copy is a Canadian release but the back of the sleeve says that the disc was pressed in Germany. Kinda surprised since I've always found European manufactured vinyls to be generally superior to the new vinyl discs that are pressed in North American plants.

Hmm... I just double checked mine, and it's okay. I'm sorry, you must have a defected copy.

I guess that's the rub with vinyl. I opened that factory sealed Mislead single the other day, and it skips in one spot. Oh well!
