Did Celine record all these songs in the same day? Does anyone know how many hours Celine was in that singing booth for on that traumatic day for the Phil Spector recordings? I can't even imagine how horrible and scary that must have been for her. :o

Yes, she recorded them in one day, one session... and that was after she filmed the Je Sais Pas music video, so you imagine how tired she was...

The plug got pulled during the final blowup* in the wee hours of the morning after JSP was filmed, but actually the sessions had been going on several weeks during the summer of 1995…. (I can’t remember the exact dates we saw on the label for one of the studio tapes that was listed for sale)…. Not sure how much of that time Céline was there recording vocals, but it was long enough for them to make several takes of at least 4 songs.

In the aftermath of Phil’s open letter to Céline’s management in Entertainment Weekly, her camp insisted that none of the sessions resulted in anything good enough to be released, but after the 3 songs were uncovered last year we learned that was false.

Furthermore, a new piece of news (probably not a rumour) is that there is a FOURTH untitled song, as well as much more polished, ready-to-release mixes done by Phil himself of the previously leaked demos, including a much different version of ITWIGFLY sung with a huge choir and in which the orchestra doesn’t come in until the “don’t leave me, baby” line. All of that could not have been recorded in one night.

*That night of the blowup, the tensions between Phil and Céline’s Sony rep (Dave Platel) reached a boiling point. Allegedly, harsh words were exchanged because Dave thought Céline was being pushed too hard and Phil thought Dave needed to mind his own business, as Céline reportedly stated that she was fine continuing to work. Phil, who was by all reports constantly drinking in the studio, whipped out his gun to remind Dave who was in charge, and Dave called Tommy Motola in New York (around 5:00 or 6:00 a.m. EST) who then gave them the okay to pull the plug.

According to witnesses in the studio, Céline and Phil were quite fond of each other. But if her manager and trusted friend was being treated unkindly, unprofessionally and even being threatened, then it’s no surprise that she gladly backed out. If only Dave Platel hadn’t been there (or just kept quiet), the outcome of the project might have been seen to fruition. Not that he’s to blame for Phil’s behaviour, but he clearly like to challenge him.

I do not at all condone Phil's actions, but I get the impressin Dave has a bit of his own ego and...abrasiveness, let's say. And somehow he is still kicking around the team...he's the longest member of Team Celine if I'm not wrong? Besides the queen herself

Pretty sure Mia Dumont has been there since Celine’s early teens - according to her LinkedIn, 42 years!

(Explains a lot about the nature of Celine’s social media presence and those quizzes…)

And my impression of Dave is quite different, actually. He comes off similar to Rene in that appears to be a soft-spoken, considerate, drama-free guy.

Interesting... yeah from what little I know, he’s an approachable person. I could see someone like Phil picking on someone like that for sport. We probably won’t hear the full story for a very long time, if at all.

So Mia is to blame! :giggle: I never heard her name mentioned on the forum before, so I will have to investigate. What is her official title?

I got the impression Dave is easy-going, friendly, and respectful...but kind of like a bull with horns when he needs to be and certain situations arise. Kind of like a politican. But he will always have the trust and protection of Celine in mind, so I am glad for her that she has someone like that after so many team changes and personal losses.

I’m very happy with how the Grammy Award winning “Falling Into You” turned out. Her success could have turned out very differently had the original concept been the release. We may not have gotten some of the epic and classic Celine songs that we now have. I can’t imagine not having IACBTMN or ABM in her catalogue.

Why do you think ABM or IACBTMN would not be on FIY if Spector's songs were included? Were ABM & It's All... added only after they dropped songs recorded with Spector?

I always thought that the French trio was added to FIY instead of Spector's songs at the last minute, but I didn't see any confirmation of this.

"Fly" is very good."I Don't Know"...not sure if my Celine bias makes me think that translation is better than it is. But "If That's What It Takes" definitely is the weakest translation on the album and probably could have been left off.

I love If That's What It Takes. However, I do wish the translation was a more accurate translation of Pour que tu m'aimes encore. It's the same melody, but kind of different song.

I love the whole "I'll cast a spell on you so you'll love me again" and "I'll turn myself into gold so you'll love me again" in the French version.

the bad (imo) translation takes me out of the song. that song is just too difficult to capture in another language. but i'm glad you feel differently! if the phil songs were finished and polished, i reckon they would make a better fit for the album. who knows ^_^

By the way, do we know if the polished and ready for release mixes of the Phil Spector tracks can be bought somewhere?

I heard If That's What It takes and was used to that song before I heard Pour que tu m'aimes encore, so it's not so strange that I love it. I didn't know there was a French version until I got the Collector Series album.

I didn't listen to Celine's French albums until I bought On Ne Change Pas in 2005. Then I remember buying all her French CD's and I basically only listened to those until the release of Taking Chances. it was like discovering a whole new Celine.

I'm still hoping they are going to release the Phil Spector songs. At the very least just release Is This What I Get For Loving You. Like most fans we want a collector series vol 2, but I don't care how it's released, just make it happen. It's too good to be forgotten.
