I didn't get everything she said after that, but I think it was something about not understanding how a Prime Minister -- people who are supposed to be intelligent -- could say that Quebec is not a distinct society. "We are different, and it's that difference that brings richness to the country." This was 1990 -- according to Wikipedia, the Meech Lake Accords were being debated in 1990 -- they were proposed constitutional amendments, something about the amount of power individual provinces in Canada would have -- and a former Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, spoke against these accords, and said that Quebec, while distinct, was no more distinct than many other places. My guess is that's what she was referring to. I bet Rene wanted her to say those things -- probably told her exactly what to say. She's been so completely apolitical since 1992 - it's hard to imagine her coming up with this herself. And recently she said outright that it was Rene who wanted her to decline the ADISQ "anglophone of the year" award. Probably Rene wanted her to do everything she could to keep her French-Quebec support at the moment she was launching an English career -- a very delicate thing to do in that political climate, where there was apparently a lot of support in Quebec for Quebec's becoming its own country. The only other time I heard her speak politics was the notorious Larry king episode. I thought she was pretty bad #ss in that interview if I do say so myself.
