"Loved Me Back To Life" - Album | PRESS Reviews

Well when you see that their favorite song is At 17...it says it all!!!

It's not one of my favorites (although I love the original song by Janis Ian) and it doesn't fit with this album's modern vibe, but from a critical standpoint you can see why it'd be a highlight. One of Celine's weaknesses in her English career is a lack of personal songs that tell a story or that relate to Celine's life. A lot of the positive critical reviews have mentioned "At 17", and i think it's due to not only how it relates to Celine as a person, but how it's so different from the rest of her catalog. It's an extremely wordy song, and conjures up very specific, poignant images - whereas most of her English songs tend to have generic lyrics.

Cool article about her new sound...

http://www.lapresse.ca/arts/musique/201311/04/01-4706896-un-virage-complet-pour-celine-dion.php

Just to summarize a bit:

They still talk about the fact that the song Mr. Paganini doesnt appear on the album because there is still a possibility of a jazz album in the air!

Apparently Celine was not very convinced by the first concept of the album Water and a Flame. The 2 parts (Vegas covers and new songs) didn't fit together.

She also said that they didn't change the title of the album because of what the author of WAAF said. Celine said she didn't even knew who he was and she didn't have bad intentions when she forgot to say her name in an interview. She also said that they changed the title to LBMTL because "love" has always been part of her life and all her "life" she has been singing. And then she added she found WAAF too rough. During the photoshoot, her dress was catching fire (????) To her, LMBTL is softer but more powerful!

I'm so glad they changed that concept from Vegas songs to new songs... Maybe it's because of Celine in the end! :)

But what is that photoshoot she was talking about? Was she kidding about the fire or is it true??

That NYT review was tepid, to me.

they are not in love with her ordinary...so i think that for them, it was the best they could do......

Plus qu'ailleurs , but now Si c'était à refaire , i still love tant de temps....

Celine has been shady these past years and I totally love it. ''I'm glad she doesn't have to sing the song'' was the first shade to Katy Winslet who said she hated 'My Heart Will Go On', then on Billboard Awards she said ''There's hits and there's a career'' which I interpreted as a total shade to radios who haven't supported her single releases the past 12 years or so and now she comes for Daniel Marrirrelevant saying she didn't mention his name because she didn't know who he was. You go girl! :pinch: :-D

when you think about it......I didn't know who he was.......poor him :giggle: and she could do worse in my book too, i totally love it :)

Another review that says that the first part of the album is great, full of potential hits like SLS, Incredible and WAAF, especially Thankful! The second half is more conventional and includes remakes that are not so inspiring...

Celine Dion, 'Loved Me Back to Life'; Midlake, 'Antiphon': Album reviews

I love the last line of his review..."More like this, please."

New York Times review is trying OH SO HARD to sound intellectual, when in fact, i find it rather dim-witted. trying to make sense of that horribly written first sentence was bad enough, but the precious turns of phrase and ridiculous descriptors of celine come off like a college student trying really really (really) hard to impress his professor, thanks to thesaurus.com.

and come on, the fact that "overjoyed" is this dude's standout track? LAUGHABLE.

the new york times may be the nation's leading newspaper--but certainly not for their music coverage.

here's my review of mr. CARAMANICA's work: LAME AND DAFT, 0 stars!!

CELINE DION

“Loved Me Back to Life”

(Columbia)

Certainly the most sassless pop superstar in recent memory, Celine Dion is a reliable war horse, and a plenty appealing one most of the time, provided pageantry and volume are your catnip. She is the iceberg, destroying all Titanics.

That she’d bother to innovate at all on the strong “Loved Me Back to Life,” her first English-language album in six years, is worthy in and of itself. Compared with her usual motor-powered balladry, this album is positively peppy. You can just register the faint outline of contemporary R&B and even hip-hop, thanks to a pair of productions by Tricky Stewart. (On the vinyl version of the track “Save Your Soul,” there’s a rap interlude by Malcolm David Kelley, late of “Lost” and now of the pop-hip-hop duo MKTO.) There’s also an implicit embrace of current dance-pop on the title track, which was written in part by Sia, the Australian singer and songwriter whose “Titanium” (made with the producer David Guetta) was one of last year’s most vocally ambitious dance-diva hits.

Bigness, not variety, is Ms. Dion’s true weapon — often it’s impossible to distinguish between when she’s singing about empowerment and when she’s singing about heartbreak — and her voice is almost impossible to maneuver with any deftness. Most songwriters for Ms. Dion know that and get out of the way, letting her extravagantly spread a few of their words over as many bars as she likes.

But Ms. Dion wants to be nimble, too, now. On this album she’s singing with more rhythm, if not more clarity, than usual. And consider her cover of Janis Ian’s 1975 soft-rock hit “At Seventeen,” an intricately detailed diary of childhood awkwardness, with more words and images in one stanza than Ms. Dion typically packs into a whole album. It’s not a success — she is the Titanic here — but it shows a curiosity that she has rarely displayed before.

That song is part of the set list at “Celine,” her show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where she has performed since 2011 and a showcase that has perhaps pushed Ms. Dion to new levels of pizazz. Several of the album’s new songs would fit seamlessly into that revue — “Water and a Flame” has genuine R&B swagger, “Save Your Soul” is a direct descendant of early-1980s Michael Jackson, and “Somebody Loves Somebody” is begging for a live version with a dozen taiko drummers and a band dressed in clingy black outfits moving around on motorized pedestals.

But her most decadent move on this album is the nervy duet with Stevie Wonder on “Overjoyed,” one of his signature numbers. (It’s also part of the “Celine” revue.) Mr. Wonder, lush and flexible, is the exact opposite of Ms. Dion as a singer. On paper, it’s a severe mismatch. But Ms. Dion isn’t out of tricks — when Mr. Wonder shimmies, she shimmies back, dodging her own shadow. JON CARAMANICA

You can't add the bonus tracks in there...they don't count as part of the standard track list
