I'm sure she will have another #1 single in the U.S. Remember, Cher was in her 50's when she stormed the charts with her #1 hit single Believe so it's not too late for Celine. sweetie, Sony lost Celine's "Cher" moment when they failed to release Sorry For Love as a single. We've been begging for a change since ages, with each album she has released since 2002, but nothing changed, even if it didn't require new efforts from Céline, because radio singles choice and airplay is Sony's duty, and René's work. Thats the closest thing to Believe and they missed the boat so i doubt Celine will ever have a Believe moment, The opportunity came and passed. And people have to realize that the 1990's harbored the largest pop songs that we know today. Cher's Believe was released in 1998, and was a huge hit because of the specific music trends that were happening. Today, pop music alone doesn't do well. Only pop songs with a dance or R&B tinge to them do well (Halo, Poker Face, etc). I honestly don't know if she'll get another U.S. #1 hit. The music industry in America is so far and away from the rest of the world, that it would take a miracle for her to score another #1 hit. I think she has a MUCH better chance to score a #1 hit in places like Europe and Canada. Her last #1 in France was in 2007, and her last #1 in Canada was in 2003. That is much more recent than her last #1 in the United States. That said, I really appreciate the vocality of this discussion. Hoepfully she will get another #1, but I don't think it's probable. Leo Posted February 7, 2010 at 08:01 PM Posted February 7, 2010 at 08:01 PM She won't have another #1 hit in the USA. Airplay, sales and online stream points are added to get the chart position. Sales: Physical singles don't sell anymore, they were replaced by digital downloads. Celine isn't a good digital track seller probably because she has an adult fan base. Celine's last #1, "I'm Your Angel," jumped to #1 because Jive released the CD single. Otherwise it would have stayed somewhere between #40 and #50 due to so-so airplay. Airplay: Mainstream Radio stations ignore her and to make things worse she can't count on the 18-20 million people a #1 song at AC radio usually has because she is not a favourite at the format anymore. Online streams: Account for about 5% of the chart's total points. It doesn't add much as airplay and sales account for the 55% and 40% respectively. The only way to have a fifth #1 (her lucky number) would be if the song sells so many downloads that the points it gets are enough to make up for the lack of airplay. What she could have is a #1 album as long as it is released in a normal week and without serious contenders. With some TV appearances, it shouldn't be hard for her to sell in the neighbourhood of 150,000 copies. If it doesn't debut at #1 it will never reach the top because albums by established artists like Celine usually debut at their peak position. But expect it to plummet because it won't have a hit to drive the sales. Quote

Moleque20 Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:39 PM Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:39 PM Celine can score another #1 hit in Europe and in Canada easily (with a good song and good promo), but in the U.S.A. I don't think so either... I think that the majority of the american audience likes young and fresh artists. They don't care about some 40+ singers who used to have huge hits in the 90's, like Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Estefan. The music industry (like everything in life) follows a circle: Celine used to be #1 in the 90's, but now she flops in singles sales+airplay. Lady Gaga, Beyonce or Taylor Swift may be at the same condition after 10 years, when younger artists appear. C'est la vie! Quote Les étoiles tombent une à une. Mes émois sont de saturne.
stevo Posted February 8, 2010 at 01:23 PM Posted February 8, 2010 at 01:23 PM Celine (or her team-Sony) simply choose to release the worst singles. They have had so many great songs. I agree that Sorry For Love or When The Wrong One Loves You Right would have been amazing and potentially successful...imagine releasing Goodbye's the Saddest Word in the Uk??!! I'm glad it was a flop and no-one knew it released, cos I was embarrassed. That's the point- they decide to release a song and do without so much of a hint of promotion apart from on the lead song. Eyes on Me, Alone...? Who heard it on radio in the UK? Terrible. So unless tehy strategically change, or she duets with Justin Timberlake on a brilliant pop song or emotional ballad, then she never will. IMO Quote

Are you seriously telling me they don't have the resources to send "Fade Away" to radio instead of "Alone" because they've printed something else on a sticker on the cover of an album? Sony are just tooooo slow at reacting. Like you say, Taking Chances just didn't pick up at radio. So what was Sony's back up plan? There just wasn't one. Simple as that. Even going to Celine's promotional appearances, these are surely scheduled far in advance too. Just WHO is deciding that she should be singing her 1996 hit "Because You Loved Me."???? A song from 14 years ago!!!. It's crazy. Sony, or Celine's team, need to be able to react quicker when it's clear things aren't working. Yes it like I have said a thousand times; the music of today is dominated by R&B, sexy moves (stupid lyrics) rap, Beyonce-like singing, sexy appearance. And these songs are easy forgotten afterwards and another replaces it with similar style. So if Celine wants to deal with that, she better have a good Timbaland song ( not the Ne-YO thing) with a catchy rhytm, good vocals, and maybe even rap.. you can see it with Charice - she can sing wonderful, but they are producing a song - Pyramid - and you can't even hear it is Charice anymore! completely autotuned like most singers. it might as well be a song from Rihannah if you didn't know! In short - I don't think she succeeds in that (the r&b thing). Maybe a very good ballad good score. Because Halo did, and both songs from Leoona Lewis scored too, so there is still hope! Dance is another option, but in dance the song is dominated by the synths and the bassdrum and the singer has less influence. But there are examples that it works - Cher did succeed, Celine did! ( drove all night) when loves takes over from David Guetta and what's her name ( former destiny's child singer). Tyler1991 Posted February 9, 2010 at 07:43 PM Posted February 9, 2010 at 07:43 PM Oh wow, another topic never debated before. *eyeroll* Between this and playback debates, I don't know what is debated more. The problem isn't just the record label. It's the publics opinion of Celine. Even with an album full of songs like Fade Away, it will still fail. When people think of Celine, they don't think of these types of songs, they think of MHWGO and other slow boring songs. When the single is released, DJs will overlook it when they see - Artist: Celine Dion...and if by some chance they do play it, the listeners will change the station before the first chorus has even started. And of course promotion is a huge problem too. Celine promoted ONE single for TC decently, appearing on about 20 shows.... but that isn't enough. The album would have to have all 3-5 singles promoted 30 times across the world. Skip out on a world tour, just do a promo tour. A world tour exposes your music to fans you already have, while a promo tour attracts new fans...with Celine's "changing style" this is what she needs to get a number 1. Newer, Younger Fans. Besides all this, the songs themselves are a problem. Say what you want, but TC wasn't exactly that edgy. Yes, the chorus and endings may have been....but the first verse, first chorus and essentially first two minutes of every song was your typical Celine ballad. People need to hear that new sound within the first 5 seconds of that song or else the radio station, TV channel, etc will be changed. Of course Sony can be blamed for releasing poor singles.... but let's not forget that it is Celine's job to promote them on television shows, etc... so her and her management can be blamed for that one. Additionally, she CHOOSES to record a song because it means something to her. I'm glad she is doing that because she wants too, but to be honest, I've never really felt that she has had much of a hands on approach to her own career. I'd like to see more of her own input on the songs themselves. My point is that it may be easy to point fingers at Sony, but it is not just Sony. It's a combination of Sony, Celine, and her management. If by some chance the stars align in the sky, then maybe we can see Celine at mainstream success again. But for now, the thought of her reaching number one is about as crazy as Elvis still being alive. Quote

Shaun Posted February 9, 2010 at 07:54 PM Posted February 9, 2010 at 07:54 PM (edited) And reading back over this thread almost everyone acknowledges the issue isn't just with Sony. People realise that Celine and her management are responsible too so not entirely sure what your point is there. There's a reason people only associate "slow boring songs" with Celine - that's all SONY ever release!! No-one is pretending "Taking Chances" was the most edgy album ever recorded but certainly some of the material on it was edgy for an artist like Celine. But once again Sony, or whoever, neglected to expose it to the public. People need to hear the sound in the first 5 seconds or they change channel? Imagine if they'd heard "Fade Away", "Can't Fight The Feeling" or using examples from the past, "Reveal" instead of "Have You Ever Been In Love", "Goodbyes The Saddest Word" or "Alone." Celine has made it quite clear that her priority right now is her family and raising Rene Charles (as it should be) so she is doing less promo than she has ever done. Is it then unreasonable to expect your record company of over 20 years to step in with some promotional support? You point out that it's Celine's job to promote her material, but then WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY are we being treated to "Because You Loved Me." I honestly can think of no other artist who promotes their NEW material in this way. This isn't another debate *rolls eyes* It's a passion to see Celine successful on the charts again.
