I've never been a big fan of Celine's compilation releases. I find that that those in charge of making these products put no attention into the sequencing but rather give more emphasis on placing her most successful singles first and then adding in less successful songs afterwards. The problem with this approach is that Celine's biggest songs, of course, are all ballads. As a listening experience, having several ballads begin a disc and then random upbeat/dance tracks throughout always feels messy. The North American version of "The Essential" made some sense as it was sequenced chronologically; however, for the most part, Celine's compilations always have an "uneven" sound to them; this is most apparent when listening to the 2-disc European version of "Essential"...an absolute sequencing mess. (Granted, I realize compilations are rarely created with a "vision" or "narrative" in mind. But the ratio of ballad to upbeat singles in Celine's career has always made for tricky sequencing with respect to an "experience.")

 

So, after some work I managed to create my own "Essential" track list for the 1-disc version of The Essential Celine Dion. I might try to do a 2-disc version at some point. I've made a version for each of Celine's main "territories" and I feel that each one is sequenced with the listening experience in mind...almost like a concert setlist. The sequencing also presents each song in a different context based on the tracks that surround it. I've included some radio edits/remixes to allow for 19-track single disc collections.

If these info are correct, the tracklist is almost the same as the 1-CD European edition (songs in the same order) with some changes : Alone has been replaced by IYAMT and WDMHBN included between TPOL and BYLM

Interesting that they're releasing this so soon - obviously they want to have a hits compilation in print when the documentary hits, but it suggests there won't be a new compilation to coincide with the documentary's release. The April date might mean the doc is coming soon, too.

 

Or it's just that the left hand isn't talking to the right hand and this is just a random release that the core Team Céline and Sony are barely aware of. Wouldn't be too surprising...

Man...when was the last interesting Céline release? Vinyl is just an excuse to rehash nothing new. What's old is new again. I don't get the hype. I guess people like to feel vintage. There's a reason things moved to digital.

 

They could actually release a new compilation with a bonus track or 2...but why pay someone to put that together when fans will buy the same old stuff over and over again?

I love a re-release if they make it something special. Cher did an amazing job with her “It’s A Man’s World” album vinyl. The packaging, the remixes, limited edition lithograph photo. It’s beautiful. If it doesn’t have something extra to celebrate the album, it’s lost on me. I love that they included “Your Light” on the FIY vinyl. That was worth the purchase for me.

I think something that iconic has too much “baggage”, plus it’s already so recognizable and identifiable with her. The more impactful syncs, from a catalog development perspective/ growing new audience base, are lesser known b-sides that are more of a “blank slate” a filmmaker can work with. The kind of thing people Shazam because they like what they hear but don’t know who/ what it is. The kind that makes people go “oh, I didn’t know Céline did that!” Something like, say, her version of Wicked Games or Refuse to Dance could work if well placed in an impactful show or film.
