Explain one thing for me.... one of the rules concerning the Olympic Theme Song, is that it can't be performed until the Opening....right? Then why can/would Céline sing it at her concert? I thought that's against regulations..

No. All candidate songs can be played. The committee just won't tell which one they'll choose.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Celine is slated to open the winter olympic in Vancouver at the moment. I doubt that they even have the run-down lay out yet. I think that person (the producer or something?) from that previous article was only saying Canada has Celine Dion, as Celine is an artist from Canada, but wasn't really meaning that Celine has been chosen to open the Olympic in 2010. Of course I would be extremely happy if that really happens, but seeing Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Nelly Furtado all from BC, I wonder if they would have an edge over Celine. But of course, to me Celine is on a different calibre.

Celine Dion postpones Beijing concert

Celine Dion Shanghai concert poster

Celine Dion has postponed her much anticipated April 13 Beijing show due to a throat infection, Chinese media reported on Tuesday. The promoter offered a refund to fans.

Diva Celine is on a world tour promoting her latest album, Taking Chances. She had already cancelled concerts in Australia at the weekend due to illness, said local newspaper the Sunday Herald Sun.

According to the Beijing News, Dion's husband, Rene Angélil, said doctors advised Dion not to sing outdoors in Beijing since April is the sandstorm season. Dion was set to play at the city's Workers' Stadium.

"We learnt that there were sand storms in Beijing in March and April. The promoter tried to find an indoor venue, the Olympic basketball arena, but it didn't work out.”

"The doctor told us it was not a good idea to sing outside. So we cancelled the event. It will take place next year, "said Angélil.

The Beijing show's promoter, Emma Entertainment, announced Tuesday morning that the concert had been postponed not cancelled, but failed to announce a future date. The promoter's website (www.emma.cn) stated that all tickets would be refunded.

Besides a full refund, fans will receive complimentary tickets for an international motorcycle championship to be held in Beijing on May 31 and June 1.

Emma Entertainment said they deeply regret the inconvenience.

But a Chinese newspaper gave another account as to why the concert was postponed.

Beijing Evening News said a spokesperson for Celine Dion told the paper that the incident had nothing to do with Beijing's weather. The "delay" or cancellation was because Emma broke Chinese rules, by selling over 10,000 tickets before receiving the approval of the local government culture department.

The paper said that Celine will arrive in China on April 11 as previously scheduled, and will attend events promoting Beijing Olympics.

China.org.cn called Emma Entertainment to check the story, but the staff either denied the report or said they don't know the facts.

Dion's Shanghai concert scheduled for April 11 will go ahead as planned.

Don't believe this rumor on April Fools day.

If Emma has no license, there's no way they can sell tickets in China. And the Beijing concert was part of the official Olympics celebration. It's impossible that they didn't get license, and break rules.

I dont understand this though....didn't Rene say it was because of the weather? And then her spokesperson said it was because of the ticket people? I don't remember Celine or her people ever being dishonest before, this is not good...

Celine Dion's Beijing show cancelled: media

Tue Apr 1, 2008 10:06pm EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - Canadian pop superstar Celine Dion's April 13 Beijing concert has been cancelled because the organizers failed to obtain a permit despite selling thousands of tickets, local media reported.

A spokesman for the singer denied media reports on Tuesday that quoted the concert organizer, Emma Ticketmaster, as saying Dion had postponed the concert at the 64,000-seat Workers Stadium due to concern that Beijing's sandstorms could affect her recovery from a recent throat infection.

The spokesman said the real reason for the cancellation was that Emma Ticketmaster "had sold more than 10,000 tickets, having not carried out the approval process," the Beijing Evening News said on Tuesday, citing a statement from the spokesman.

"Celine Dion will solve (the issue) through legal channels," the paper quoted the statement as saying.

Officials at Emma Ticketmaster were not available for comment. Staff contacted at the company's sales hotline said Dion's concert had been "postponed for health reasons", and ticket-holders could get refunds, but no new date had been fixed.

The company's Web site on Wednesday advertised Dion's Beijing concert without attaching a date. Dion would perform her first concert in China in Shanghai on April 11, according to the Web site.

China-based Emma Ticketmaster was involved in a controversy last month after Icelandic singer Bjork played her song, "Declare Independence", and chanted "Tibet! Tibet!" during a concert the company promoted in Shanghai last month.

China's Culture Ministry said it would tighten controls over foreign performers after the Bjork incident, but ministry officials later said it was an isolated case and would not affect foreign artists coming to perform.

Dion would still come to Beijing, the paper said, to participate in a promotional event for the Olympic Games on April 12.

Dion sang the theme song "The Power of the Dream" at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics but is best known for "My Heart Will Go On", a song from the movie "Titanic", which was a huge hit in Asia.

Sorry, I have to say this sounds fake too. It has nothing to do with Bjork issue. Some other concerts organized by Emma are still doing well. Reuters and some other press just want to associate everything to Tibet.

Also I highly doubt Celine would still come to Beijing on April 12th. She has a concert in Malaysia on 13th. Why would she wants to tired herself so much this way, instead of asking the reporters interview her in Shanghai instead.

This is from Reuters an important press agency and it says it's a problem of permission from the government

Contract dispute cancels Celine Dion's Beijing concert

By Li Xinran 2008-4-2

CANADIAN diva Celine Dion canceled her Beijing performance because of a dispute over ticket sales, her spokesman said.

An earlier report by Beijing News claimed the cancellation was due to weather conditions which might affect Dion's voice and throat, since sandstorms frequently buffet Beijing in spring.

However, the spokesman said the decision was not related to weather but was because the sponsor Emma Entertainment sold more than 10,000 tickets without approval.

Dion's lawyers are looking into the dispute, the spokesman said.

Though the Beijing concert had been canceled, Dion would arrive in Beijing for a two-day visit on April 11 to join the promotion activities of the Beijing Olympic Games, said the spokesman and quoted by Beijing Evening News as saying yesterday.

.

Dion was also reported to give the green light for her Shanghai Concert on April 11. She has offered her best wishes for the success of the Olympic Games and said it should not be connected with politics, the spokesman added.

The Beijing concert was to be one stop of her world tour Taking Chances, the singer's first world tour in nearly 10 years.

Dion's success in the world of pop music market is closely linked to Hollywood. The Canadian superstar won the hearts of English-speaking fans in 1993, with songs from the film Beauty and the Beast. In 1997, she swept the world with My Heart Will Go On, from the blockbuster Titanic.

The World Tour started in South Africa and will include performances in Japan, South Korea and Australia before arriving in China.
