hellmeister Posted February 22, 2009 at 08:25 PM Posted February 22, 2009 at 08:25 PM Um... I am not really sure if I ever posted on this... because at the time I was new to the forum SOOoooo here is my story/review It all started with an English paper. I was assigned to write a paper about women leaders and I chose to write about Celine and Oprah… naturally. I went on Oprah’s website and decided to check up on upcoming shows. There is was, in all its glory “Is someone you know a huge Celine Dion fan?” Being that I am Celine’s #1 fan , I immediately took action demanding that all of the girls on my hall write to Oprah about me. That very same day I made a Facebook group and started my “Brittany wants to meet Celine Dion” campaign. The Facebook group was basically a connection to the Oprah page and it had all of the information to prove that I was Celine’s biggest fan. I had CD’s, shirts, coasters, a jewelry box, DVD’s, a magnet, books, posters, EVERYTHING. I also made 70 flyers with the same info as the Facebook group on them. It was hysterical to see the reactions that I got when I handed people my bright green flyer with Celine’s face on it. I got a lot of “Celine Dion? Seriously?” I didn’t care though; it was all in the name of Celine. I would have tattooed it across my face if I had the chance to. I wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass me by. I had already written to Oprah a million and a half times begging her to bring Celine on the show and let me meet her. This was my chance. I had to make it happen. About two weeks later (Oct 17) I got the surprise of a lifetime. As a freshman dorm we are required to have hall socials. My RA, Anna Beck, told us that we were going to have a social that was going to be filmed as a dorm life promo for NGTV, North Georgia’s new television show. She told us that we were going to all sit together, pop in a movie, and we were supposed to act all “dormie.” I didn’t really care much about that so I went and worked out, jumped in the shower and sat down with all the girls wearing my monkey PJ’s and a big orange towel on my head… hugging a bear. With the camera people ready, Anna Beck began the social by talking about the normal dorm stuff like shower puddles, quiet hours… etc. Then she got a DVD (which she told us was home videos of her boyfriend) and put it in. I was a little confused when Celine Dion came on the screen. At first, I just thought that Anna was being nice and had gotten a new Celine DVD to make me happy. I was wrong though. Celine said “Hello Students of North Georgia! I am looking for a very special girl… is Brittany Hellmeister there?” My mouth dropped. I believe that it stayed in that shocked and awe position until I could actually function and think about what I was hearing!! “Hi Brittany, its Celine Dion…. I bet you are shocked right now because you thought that it was going to be a regular night in the dorm. Well… I little birdie told me that you heard that I was going to be on the Oprah Show next week and you passed out flyers and got your fellow classmates to write to Oprah telling what a big fan you are!” My mouth was still open…. “Brittany, I have big news. Are you ready? I want you to tell all your professors that you won’t be in class for one day next week because you are coming to Chicago, and you have two front rows tickets to the Oprah Show!” I was FREAKING OUT… “So what are you waiting for? Go back your bags and I will see you in Chicago girl! I can’t wait to meet you… see ya!” Then she winked and blew me a kiss… AHHHHHH!!!!! I was crying, everyone was screaming, the cameras were in my face, it was INSANE! The camera people were actually from Harpo, Oprah’s studio. They had chosen ME as Celine’s biggest fan! For the rest of the night I walked around with them recording me talking about my love for Celine, showing them my Celine paraphernalia, and doing lots of other fun and completely ridiculous things. I couldn’t believe what was happening! I never truly believed that when I made those flyers, when I made the Facebook group, when I emailed all of my friends and family… that it was actually going to work! I was allowed to bring one person with me and I chose to take Laura Clay who has my best friend for 10 years. She had taken me to Las Vegas when I was in 9th grade to see Celine so I though that I’d return the favor ten fold. For the next couple of days I walked around in the blissful daze thinking only of Celine and really, I couldn’t function with anything non-Celine related. I was SO excited! On Tuesday (Oct 23) Laura and I got on our plane to Chicago. We were picked up at the airport in a super sweet limo by a driver named Luciano (of course that was his name.) He drove us to the Omni Hotel which was a dazzling 4 STAR hotel where all of Oprah’s guests were sent. We were taken to our room on the 18th floor which was high enough that we could look out our window and see the entire city. We put on hats, scarves, and jackets since it was only in the 50’s and went out to explore. Chicago was such a beautiful city with streets lined with bright yellow trees and buildings that all had a unique and pretty design. On our exploration we found this picturesque park that was just bursting with colors of fall. We spend the rest of the evening playing in the leaves and taking fun pictures. For dinner we were given $100 to spend in the hotel restaurant, and oh my, did we feel special! We felt very divine being able to order from the more… pricey… side of the menu. We ordered Pumpkin Soup, Almond and Blueberry salad, Whitefish with squash and stuffed mushrooms, and Alaskan Salmon with baked apples and potatoes. For dessert we had Cherry Cheesecake with Vanilla Fizz and sugar sticks and an Apple Oatmeal Bake, YUM! The next morning Laura and I woke up bright and early and ordered our breakfast. I got the “chefs seasonal fruit plate” which consisted of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, bananas, and melon. We dressed in our specially picked outfits and Laura did her hair and makeup. I didn’t have to bother with that because Kelly, the woman who had been coordinating everything, had told me that I could come with a fresh face and hair because they were going to do it for me! Our limo picked us up and drove us to Harpo Studios. We were taken in the door and had to give away all of our belongings, including our camera Kelly took us up to the room where I would get all prettied up. I sat down expecting some regular brush on makeup, but no, it was really neat high quality airbrush stuff. My makeup was put on by this spray gun sort of thing. I felt really cool While I was getting ready, Kelly was giving me a basic run down of the show. I kept asking her if I was going to get to at least shake Celine’s hand, something, anything, but all that she would say was that she wasn’t sure what Celine had planned. What she did say was “Oprah may ask you some questions…. But don’t worry, just be you, everyone thinks that you are adorable!” While all of this was going on, random people would walk in and say stuff like “oh! Brittany, I am so glad to meet you finally!” or “Hey Brittany (shake my hand) BIG fan of yours!” They made me feel so great! When I was finally all dolled up and ready to go, they put a mic on me and we were lead to the studio. We walked in the doorway and the room was just bursting with energy! Celine’s music was blaring, the audience members were talking and laughing, and a woman was running around getting everyone pumped up by asking Celine trivia and yelling out “who is Celine’s biggest fan!?” which resulted in everyone roaring with cheers and applause. Laura and I weren’t allowed to sit down yet since they were still getting things ready with the curtain and our seats were RIGHT in front of the stage. I stood there all excited and nervous, shaking like a mad woman. I kept looking around thinking, is this really where I am!?! It was extraordinary! Finally, we were escorted to our seats and everyone stared at us as we walked to the front row… probably since there were only six seats to be filled. I sat down next to a girl named Amanda who told me she loved Celine Dion but had just found out that day that Celine was going to be on the show. On my other side was Laura and then Amanda’s friend Kelly. Next to Amanda there were two empty seats… I was eager to find out who would fill them. I was facing Laura yapping about how stoked I was and when I turned back to talk to Amanda, guess who sat down right next to her?!? Celine’s husband!! Everything just kept getting better and better! I stuck out my hand and said “Hi Rene! I am Brittany! How are you doing?” He told me that he was feeling great and then we chatted about his little boy, his favorite color, how Celine was feeling (VERY nervous, he said) and other random things. Amanda looked at me and said “HOW are you doing that?!” I just smiled at her. Everyone started to chant “Oprah! Oprah! Oprah!” [hahahahha] and after tricking us a few times, Oprah finally strolled onto the set to a very welcoming audience. She did her usual camera greeting, shook some hands, and told a bit about what the show had in store. I turned back to face the front and practically jumped out of my seat by what I saw through the sheer curtain. It was Celine’s silhouette, poised and set with the microphone in her hand. I grabbed Amanda’s arm and we were both trembling all over with anticipation. Oprah finished her welcoming speech and shouted “Put your hands together for Celine Dion!” The curtain dropped and an explosion of applauding and shouting rushed all around me. Celine was RIGHT there…right in front of me, singing “A New Day.” I looked over at Amanda and we laughed because both of us were crying. Before I go on, I would like to say that the best part about all of this is that Celine is EXACTLY who I thought she was. You know how you form these ideas about people and then sometimes they turn out to be a disappointment? Well, Celine was everything I had imagined and more. Because it wasn’t a live show, I got to see more of the funny and nutty Celine that I adore during commercial breaks. She was so comical and just plain adorable. She cracked jokes right and left and sheso full of life! Okay, so the show continued on with Oprah talking with Celine about her performances in Vegas coming to an end, about her little boy, her new album, and then about her life in general. She would look out at the audience every so often and smile and I kept thinking, “Does she know who I am? Does she even know what I look like?” Nevertheless, my eyes stayed glued to her and I kept that same wild grin on my face. I have to say, the next part is never going to be as good in words as it was in real life, but I shall try to fully express how wonderful it was. After more Celine-Oprah conversation and some commercial breaks (loved them!) Oprah switched the topic saying “Celine has been busy preparing some surprises for some of her biggest fans.” I grabbed Amanda’s arm again… “There is a student from North Georgia here and her name is Brittany Hellmeister.” Right as she said that, Celine looked right into my eyes and winked. SHE KNEW WHO I WAS!!!! Then Oprah read off one of the letters that someone wrote in. It said: I just met this girl named Brittany Hellmeister recently. I don’t know much about her but I do know that she is Celine’s biggest fan and the hottest redhead that I know. They showed the video of them surprising me in my dorm... which was super cute! As soon as it ended, Celine stood up and Oprah said “come up here!” For a moment, I just stared at her is disbelief and then somehow I managed to get out of my seat and onto the stage. Celine met me half way, wrapped her arms around me and gave me the best hug of my life! It wasn’t like she gave me a quick pat or a shake of the hand… No, I was EMBRACING Celine Dion! Celine said to me “you can sit in my chair and keep it warm for me!” I sat down holding Celine’s hand and I was beaming with the biggest smile I could make! Celine said to me “you ARE the hottest redhead ever!” Up to that point I hadn’t really paid much attention to Oprah. I actually kind of forgot she was there which is why my first reaction to her touching my hair was to scream and then high five her! She screamed right back and then I said, “OPRAH! (I turned) CELINE!!” They both just smiled at me. I am sure that I looked like a complete spaz. Oprah then said “this is a chance of a lifetime…You get to request a song of Celine… what will it be?!” “I Drove All Night” I said. “You got it!” Celine said. Celine belted out that song right there beside me and I was singing and dancing along!!! I can’t even describe how happy I was during all of this. Happy isn’t even a good word: thrilled… elated… EUPHORIC is more like it. When she finished singing, the three of us took a picture together; I hugged Celine again, and then went back to my seat. For the rest of the show, Celine performed songs from her new album, Taking Chances. She sang with so much passion and it was incredible to watch! During her performances, she would do little things like point or smile at me and it made my whole body tingle! Right before the show ended, I told Rene that I had written Celine a letter, made out of my own scraps, but that I didn’t know if it would get to her. He said “well, just in case it doesn’t…” and he handed me his business card! Celine closed the show and then after her goodbyes, she and Rene walked away from all of her screaming fans. Kelly came over and said “come with me!” We followed her into a hallway that was going to take us back to our room and Celine was standing there talking to some people. I waved at her and she said “you are my friend now!” She gave me a hug, kissed my cheek, and wished me the best in life. Then Laura and I were whisked away from the fantasy world. We took our limo to the hotel and then to the airport. For the entire flight home, I was in the same blissful daze as I was when I was first surprised by Harpo. I just stared out the window replaying every moment over and over in my head. Meeting Celine Dion was the most incredible experience of my life and even after writing this all out, it is hard for me to believe that it actually happened. It was my DREAM…. And I guess dreams really do come true. The End. Oh, I love Celine Dion : ) Quote
