A TV movie about Celine's career

I really disliked this movie. I do agree with scielle that it seemed like the filmmakers' heart was in the right place -- I got the impression that they were Celine fans and wanted to tell a story that celebrated her. However -- aside from the factual inaccuracies riddling the whole movie, two major things bothered me:

1. There is no French whatsoever. I get that they did this for budget reasons -- but if they're speaking in English through the whole movie, it's not a Celine Dion biopic. It's just not . maybe it's a story inspired by Celine's story, or something, but it cannot be a biopic. That is such a massive part of her legacy .. . the first Quebecoise singer to make it big around the world; the way she sustained both a French AND an English recording career (didn't abandon her French-language fans at all) -- that, to me IS the story of Celine's career. You can't have a biopic of her and just leave that part out.

2. The Celine and Rene love story -- This is one of the biggest things I love about Celine -- I find Celine and Rene's love for each other so inspiring. And while the movie treated it respectfully, I found that the actors had very little chemistry (cringe-worthy in some places) - and I HATE this interview with the guy who played Rene, who basically said that their relationship was creepy because of the age difference. I mean, come on, how can he possibly play Rene with any credibility?? Ugh, it annoyed me SO much:

Agree with you 100% about the love story part. It was so awkward in the movie, no chemistry whatsoever. I always hated that interview too with the actor. Was almost like he was embarrassed to play Rene. Hopefully someday when they do a proper movie the love story will be the best part.

I hate this movie. I can't even watch it when I see it on t.v. because I get mad at all the inaccuracies. The fact that they basically try and take a French Canadian girl and turn her into someone who isn't French whatsoever. They didn't even bother to give her a French accent for goodness sake. :rolleyes1:

Talk about cheap budget. It's like the producers thought people wouldn't notice they took everything out of the film that makes her Celine. They didn't even use her real singing voice. I wish this movie was more like the Selena movie. Now that's a good biopic. The casting was great. Jennifer Lopez captured Selena's essence perfectly and I loved that they used Selena's real singing voice throughout the entire movie.

Whoever makes the next Celine film should take a page from the Selena movie.

Well, you've got to see this thing through the lens of what it was - a cheap and opportunistic made-for-TV biopic. That's a very different animal than a big budge cinematic release. Different aims, different formula, very different tools at the producers' disposal. And for what it was... well it could have been way worse.

I get why they messed up the chronology in some instances for dramatic effect (like Rene's heart attack, for instance) but I wholeheartedly agree that it was completely ridiculous to strip anything quebecois out of this. Just wrong.

Someone just put a dubbed version of this on YouTube.

Much as a lot of this is cringe-worthy, you've got to admit they got a lot of details right! The plate flipping, the shoe obsession...

I'm shocked she doesn't talk about the plate flipping more when asked about her big family! I mean I guess it is good because it's not said over and over. Made it kinda special to be said only once, you could say.

I didn't know love until they loved me back to life because somebody loves somebody!

I haven't watched it and don't want to watch it since it was unauthorized movie.

I do hope they do an authorized movie in the future, really hope they do
