It was very planned out as this was supposed to be Celine's last album before she took her break...they built it to be the album of her life with all of those legends she worked with. Then, MHWGO happened.

I remember seeing her on Rosie saying it was "the album of her career" and "I can retire now." As much as I love the album, the thing you mentioned about her working with all those legends definitely doesn't help her come off as the 28/29 year-old she was at the time of recording. She was working with artists in their 50s and 60s, and if that made her happy and excited her, that makes me glad for her. But then I just think of a song like That's The Way It Is, and how fresh and vital it still sounds 15 years later, and how many other songs she might have touched the same way that never went her direction because of the image an album like LTAL reinforced.

I really *DO* love the album, despite how it seems! :w00t: Though I suppose that's a discussion saved for the LTAL thread. I began a long-winded review of the album last year but crashed about 80% of the way in and never got back on the horse.

One of the main reasons that it was such a big deal for Celine to be working with these legends was because of her young age. How many 28 year old singers now would even be taken seriously enough to have a song produced by Sir George Martin, or to have Barbra Streisand willingly WANT to record a duet? Not many that are popular now as they don't possess the talent to be taken seriously. I get what you are saying about the album making Celine come off as older, but at this point in her career she was already established mainly as an AC staple where the demographic was generally older. AC artists had more credibility in the 90's/early 2000's because it was an actual format for radio. Now, in 2014, the AC format doesn't exist. AC stations are now just playing top 40 songs as they get pushed off of top 40 stations in order to make room for the new material that is constantly coming in. Celine was never yielded as a top 40 artist. Her songs became popular enough on AC to garner air time on top 40 stations that the younger people were listening to, but she never solely appealed to the younger demographic. LTAL was clearly aimed at the AC demographic by having all of those guests appear to sing with Celine.

You are right, she had long been presented as an AC act up to that point. And I'm fine with the fact that she was so AC-focused because she gave us a wealth of extraordinary ballads. It's just a shame that, like you said, what was once AC radio has shifted so dramatically in the past decade to become the dumping ground for what Top 40 radio was playing six months prior. And it's a shame that Celine has to rely on a radio format that, in some places, would cut off whatever she's promoting at the time for two months to play wall-to-wall Christmas music, at least in the United States.

But anyway, The Colour Of My Love: in the past year I've given it some more full listens and it just doesn't do it for me. I'd always rather ignored her pre-95 work until the past year and a half, and while Celine Dion broke through and I love that album, I just can't get it up for Unison or TCOML. It just feels as if it's going through motions for me. The Power of Love is a giant, and then by and large everything else sounds kind of bland to my ears, even Think Twice which sucks because I know how massive it was in some territories, and I can't understand why...

Just listened to two of my favorite songs from this album: Next Plane Out and Love Doesn't Ask Why. Raw emotion. Crystal clear voice. So moving.

Actually the album wasn't planned until she recorded MHWGO. She was meant to be having a year off after the FIY tour. So the album was a bit rushed (to get recorded and produced) so it could be released at a similar time as Titanic. David Foster was working 24/7 to get the album ready. Don't think it was as planned as they'd have liked.

That's not true. Somy had been planning the recording the album all throughout 1997, and initially did not even want to record MHWGO. In fact, even after she decided to do the demo, nobody was even sure the song would be included in the "Titanic" soundtrack as James Cameron did not want any pop songs in the movie. The demo was done behind his back. Why would they rush an album together for a song they weren't sure was even going to be released. And...if it was rushed, they would never have been able to secure all the big names that appeared on the album. Albums being recorded are not determined by one song.

Are you kidding me? TT sucks?
TT is one of her best ballads.
TPOL is overproduced and boring.

These are two of my favorites off "The Colour Of My Love."  Both would fit beautifully in "Celine," especially "Next Plane Out" as it was an actual single in Australia.  The screens on the sides of the theatre could even portray rain falling down as the intro to the song plays.

I guess you are the reason TT wasn't a hit in the States but was everywhere else! :-D I always prefered it to TPOL as that song is so over the top and sappy... while TT is more intimate and more sophisticated!

I have always loved CD and TCOML but Unison has a special place in my heart! I dunno that album has something innocent and pure... like her early French work... I play that album a lot! LOL

TCOML also has some great songs that could work live very well IMO like LP or NLWLY... It would be cool if these songs and Misled got modernized a bit and be sung live (again)

Agreed!  "Misled" should really be represented in some fashion during her shows/tours in the U.S.  It was, after all, her first #1 hit on the dance club charts.  It wouldn't take much to freshen the song up a la "I'm Alive" from the "Taking Chances World Tour."

No... I would never say a song sucks. What I mean is that I don't like Think Twice, and the fact that I don't like it sucks because I know how it's held in high regard by Celine fans and it'd be nice to understand its appeal...

Oh i really miss the 90's ballad, not just from Celine but the other singer, i miss the beautiful voices.
I still love the albums and it doesnt sound too old, its doesnt happen with the hip album i bought like the album from Missy Eliot, i use to be so crazy for the Get Your Freak On song, but now i can't even stand to hear one single song from that album, it sound so old and boring now. That's why now i stop buying a hip album, maybe for a compilation one i would still buy it, now i prefer a high quality album only. I didn't mean a hip album is bad, i just think it wont last too long.

That's why the album was rushed! It wasn't planned until James Cameron said yes to the song being included. Then Sony wanted Celine to record an album to be released and promoted during the release of the film. Sony wanted a new album from her earlier than planned because of MHWGO. If this album (that Celine was now part of) was gonna be big, they wanted to be part of it.
Anyway, this thread is meant to be about TCOML - not LTAL!

I have to say, I wasn't the biggest fan of the Unison era.  Although there are some gems on the album.  However, I mostly love TCOML.  To me, that was more of a debut album for her, especially here in the states, than Unison was.  She has some great pop songs and a few great ballads.  I absolutely adore Think Twice, NPO, LDAW, etc. And it was so sweet the way she outed her relationship with Renee.    To me, it makes it a more personal album for her and I love that.  And her note was so sweet.  It's my favorite that she's ever written for him.

"The Colour Of My Love" (song) would make a great addition to "Celine."  Just as she has images of Eddy and Nelson on screen during "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)," should could have images of she and Rene on the screens during a performance of "The Colour Of My Love."  I can't even begin to imagine how insanely beautiful that song would sound with her 31-piece orchestra! :spaz:

Right now I'm listening to this album. I got bored of LMBTL cos I've been listening to it for the past two months and I started to go through Celine's older stuff. And Now I've had this album on repeat for two days :D It's amazing..

This was the first Celine CD I bought. I had seen the MV of Only One Road and fell in love with the song, but couldnt catch the artist. For a long time I tried to find out who sang it and and then I found out it was Celine and that's where my love for her started. I wanted to know everything, wanted to see every picture on the internet.. Remember it was mid-90's loading all those pictures took AGES!!

She's been with me through all these years, I even have the  PQTME symbol that's on my ava tattooed on my back. She's even saved my life in a way.

But I digress.. Now that I listen to this album I realize how awesome it is!! I dont skip a song! On every single album there are those songs that make me go "meh...dont wanna hear that" and I just skip them. Granted, TPOL has been sung a couple of thousand times too many to be interesting anymore, and When I Fall in Love is a bit meh. But her voice  I can't skip even those ones...

20 years ago Celine had her first N1 with TPOL on Billboard. This was a big step for a girl from Quebec, who now was a rival for her idol WH and of course MC.

i love this album, it was her international breakthrough

I remember to see both albums on top 5 in Portugal by the time, if not wrong #2  - Deux+TCOML(her 1st platinum album in PT)

I wish we get a decent collector editions from  her earlier 3 English albums

this album in my opinion is so diversified - Ballads + uptempo songs, maybe her most uptempo album from the 90's in english

Refuse to dance - is still a germ on the album, that could be used in her upcoming tour with dancers and a new arrangement

the live/playback tv performances are amazing, so theatrical, we notice a huge Madonna influence on this era

the worst was her style/look - so George V  :giggle:

As Ballads - Twink Twice and Just walk away are in-temporal songs that i still enjoy today

Charts Portugal
The Colour Of My Love - Celine Dion - #2  + #10 - best selling album of 95
D'Eux - Celine Dion - #2/
Falling Into Love - Celine Dion - #2
