The legacy of My Heart Will Go On

Recommended Posts

In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, there is a very very very small indirect mention of MHWGO, the Afghans at Kabul are getting obsessed over Titanic in the summer of 2000, despite The Talibans banning any music/films/dance.

'Titanic City was born.

Its the song, they said.

No, the sea. The luxury. The ship.

Its the s*x, they whispered."

Celine Dion was HUGE back then! She was bigger than Britney Spears, Beyoncé or Lady Gaga ever were in terms of sales. IMO commercially speaking only Adele can match what Celine Dion represented between 1995 and 1999. It was really tremendous! She was everywhere and I loved it! :)

I agree! Celine's chart and sales success was MASSIVE during the 90's! I loved how well Sony music used to prioritize Celine and used to put a lot of focus on promoting and advertising her music! Per Billboard, in just 1998, Celine sold an incredible number of copies, worldwide:

“The success of Celine Dion’s ‘Let’s Talk About Love’ was inextricably linked to the

domination of the international sales charts by the ‘Titanic’ soundtrack. The single ‘My Heart

Will Go On’ was featured on both albums. Sony Music says that her worldwide sales figures for

‘Let’s Talk’ in 1998 were about 25 million, while ‘Titanic’ sales were close to 27 million”! – Billboard from August 14, 1999.

And, here are just a couple newer examples of the lasting, timeless legacy of Celine's iconic “My Heart Will Go On”:

Udiscovermusic.com posted a new article on Nov. 15, 2021 titled- “The Best 90s Music: 200+ Songs

From Alternative, Hip-Hop, And More, The best 90’s songs reflect music in transition: From alternative to hip-hop to electronic and beyond, we count down the best from a wild musical decade.”

My Heart Will Go On” was named one of the best 13 pop songs of the 90’s, with a statement that says- “Celine Dion turned a soundtrack cut from Titanic into one of the biggest songs in the history of film music”!

This month, on 4/3/22, BuzzFeed started a new article and poll, regarding Big Hit Songs from the

‘90’s titled: “I Am Genuinely Curious If You Like These 45 Big Hit Songs From The ‘90s, These were just

some of the iconic songs that defined the 1990’s”, and “My Heart Will Go On” was on the list as one of

the Big Hit songs, and with over 40,000 votes to date, 73% voted- I Like That Song! This is just one example of the lasting popularity and love that people still have for the classic song! :)

I absolutely ADORE Anton's reactions (and he's done quite a few Celine songs) but this reaction just brings me to tears. In the video, he admits he's never heard the song and to watch him experience this song for the first time...give it a watch. :teary:

New Signature Coming Soon!

This fabulous new, well-researched article appeared just hours before the Courage rescheduling news and was buried. Well worth a read - definitely written by a superfan!

It's pretty much a rehash of the Billboard article from several years ago, at the time she sang it at the BBMAs for the anniversary.

https://www.billboar...erview-7800213/

(Several other outlets picked it up at the time, too. I recall lots of clickbait re. Celine's "girly days"...)

On similar note, Stereogum recently had similar pieces covering POL and BYLM, as part of their The Number Ones series:

BYLM: https://www.stereogu...he-number-ones/

*New article from very popular music website Stereogum.com that was just released/posted:

The Number Ones: Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” (stereogum.com)

I don't agree with many things said by the author of the article written about "My Heart Will Go On", but in general it was a very interesting article with SOME good feedback.

Here is a quote by the author TOM BREIHAN that I definitely appreciated:

"The song, I came to learn, has absolute confidence in its sincerity. That little flute-whistle calls out mournfully, and Céline Dion answers it with so much softness and warmth in her voice: “Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feel you.” The song follows the time-honored movie-ballad arc, building the big finish where Céline Dion howls out the chorus one final time, and it works. On a certain level, the song’s drama is irresistible. It demands a theatrical hand-on-heart singalong: “Near! Far! Where-evvvv-er you are!” I put up so many defenses against this thing, but it finally got me anyway. I was not unsinkable."

It's pretty interesting, and awesome that so many people that didn't want to like "My Heart Will Go On" for many years, much of the time because of it's incredible popularity and radio airplay, are FINALLY beginning to appreciate the song for the amazing classic it is.

Congrats to Celine for "My Heart Will Go On" just recently passing 400 MILLION in streams on Spotify!!! Awesome milestone!

FYI: "My Heart Will Go On" achieved over 55 million in Spotify streams in just over 9 months, since November last year, when Spotify streams were then 345 million.

This shows the amazing endurance/popularity of Celine's signature song!

With the special 25th anniversary of the release of "My Heart Will Go On" approaching very soon in November and December this year, I truly hope that Celine's record label and team will honor and celebrate this milestone anniversary in a BIG way! It will also be the special 25th anniversary of the release of two of the best selling albums of all time- Celine's "Let's Talk About Love" and the Titanic soundtrack this November!

Some great recognition to celebrate this major anniversary could be:

  • Sony Music and/or Legacy Recordings requesting a long awaited update to the RIAA certifications to the "My Heart Will Go On" single, which is still only certified RIAA Gold since 1998! The iconic single is eligible to be certified at least 6X Platinum, based on official U.S. on-demand streams, and digital downloads.
  • "My Heart Will Go On" being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is "continuing its ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating timeless recordings." The Grammy Hall of Fame recognizes a diverse range of both single and album recordings at least 25 years old that exhibit qualitative or historical significance. "Recordings are reviewed each year by a special member committee comprised of eminent and knowledgeable professionals from all branches of the recording arts, with final approval by the Recording Academy's National Board of Trustees." The Hall, now in its 50th year, currently totals more than 1,142 recordings.
  • "My Heart Will Go On" being inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, which annually inducts songs worthy of preservation for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant recordings to add to the registry.
  • Team Celine recognizing this anniversary on all of Celine's social media and on her official website, perhaps providing the most up to date U.S. and worldwide sales figures and music records for the classic song, and perhaps posting a new more extended behind the scenes video for the making of the "My Heart Will Go On" music video.
  • Team Celine finally after waiting MANY years, posts Celine's official "My Heart Will Go On" music video to her official YouTube channel.

I don't know if any of these achievements or honors will actually take place, but one can certainly dream and hope that any of these do. :)

In fact, it's more

Spotify only a part of stream world and a small part for Celine who is the two top global divas ever, My heart will go on over 1.5 billion views in YouTube without official. EVEN IN US ,according to trusted industry source Billboard, mhwgo had almost 600 million stream in US when Spotify number under 300 million worldwide in 2020(https://jezebel.com/which-no-1-singles-from-the-80s-and-90s-stand-the-test-1844294232?rev=1595250877341) Early-to-mid-’80s songs fill the top 10, which includes only one from the ’90s (“My Heart Will Go On,” by Celine Dion).

25 years anniversary?!?

Okay. Time flies :sofunny:

Time really flies!

I get many people are really tired of this song since it was played on the radio stations all the time when it was new.

But for me even to this day I haven't get tired of this song. For me absolutely one of the best songs ever made and will be so forever I guess.

Still Celine's best song also.

Agreed! His reaction to "A New Day Has Come" was quite surprising...in a good way!

I feel like he sincerely appreciates these songs as well as Celine. I love his comments about her songs being so human, pure and real, and I totally agree. Also his comments about Tell Him and Ashes were so thoughtful. Best reaction videos :) Edited by ryba

The single has sold over 18m copies worldwide. As if that was not enough, it was included in Let's Talk About Love (32m), the Titanic soundtrack (30m), All The Way...A decade of songs (22m), My Love... The Essential Collection (3m), Au Couer Du Stade (1.5m), A New Day... live in Las Vegas (1.5m), plus compilation and live albums in the past decade.

Just above 110m records have been sold featuring this song. I do not think any other recording compares to this. The peak of Celine's career remains impeccable.

Happy 72.png72.pngTH Anniversary to the timeless, beautiful, iconic “My Heart Will Go On” music video, that was recorded on this date- October 28th, in 1997!!! 72.png72.png

“The video’s director (Billie Woodruff) gives much credit to Celine” - Entertainment Tonight, during a special behind the scenes making of Celine’s “My Heart Will Go On” music video “There’s something magical in her voice and it kind of reaches people in the same way the movie does” - Billie Woodruff

In 1998, Celine WON the MuchMusic Video Award for Peoples Choice: Favorite Artist for “My Heart Will Go On”! 72.png

Celine’s “My Heart Will Go On” topped VH1’s Top video countdown for a record breaking 10 consecutive weeks in 1998 (a record Celine still holds to date for any solo female artist), stayed in the top 10 for 20 consecutive weeks, and Celine WON 3 VH1 awards in 1998!!!, mainly due to the amazing success of “My Heart Will Go On” and the songs fantastic music video- Artist of the year, Female Artist of the year and Diva of the year! 72.png

Celine’s “My Heart Will Go On” was the #1 most played music video MTV for several consecutive weeks in 1998, and ended the year in the top 10 music videos on MTV’s first ever TRL yearly countdown!! 72.png

Before YouTube, one of the most exciting and popular music video channels was The Box, which operated from 1985 to 2001, and was broadcast in more than 30 million U.S. households and 25 million households internationally. Viewers phone a video “jukebox” line to request the video and artist they want to see. In 1999, Guinness World Records announced in their 2000 Millennium Edition book released worldwide that “My Heart Will Go On” set the world record for the “most played music video on The Box” of all time!, that received an unprecedented 60,474 requests between January of 1998 and July of 1999!!! 72.png

According to YouTube insights, “My Heart Will Go On” has achieved BILLIONS of views worldwide, however, shockingly Celine’s official music video has still not yet been released on Celine’s official YouTube channel!

What an VERY impressive list of success and achievements! Definitely one of Celine’s best music videos of her career!

Congrats to Celine on her recent RIAA awards!, with "Let's Talk About Love" featuring the radio version of Celine's signature song "My Heart Will Go On", being just NEWLY RIAA certified 11X Platinum, AND for "My Heart Will Go On' being certified Platinum, and 4X Platinum for U.S. sales over more than 4 million!

For many years, according to many sources/articles, prior to this NEW RIAA certification/award, the iconic, timeless, legendary "My Heart Will Go On" ALREADY had WORLDWIDE sales of over 18 million, and NOW adding in the additional 4 million in certified sales, "My Heart Will Go On" now has worldwide sales of more than 22 million, and would make the song THE BEST SELLING SINGLE BY ANY FEMALE ARTIST OF ALL TIME!!!

What an amazing achievement and feat for Celine and "My Heart Will Go On" just ahead of the 25th anniversary of the single, and of the release of Celine's "Let's Talk About Love" classic album, and of the Titanic soundtrack!

Yesterday, they showed a Movie Soundtrack Countdown on the German Music TV Channel Deluxe Music. And Celine's MHWGO was at NO 1. I was surprised, because I thought they will play Adele's Skyfall or sth. like that, because the songs in the countdown were more recent (Eminem, E. Goulding, B. Eilish etc.). That's the Power of Celine.

Man I'm sure the video would break records if officially released on youtube to keep all the views to one video...
