Ehhh imo, "deal with the devil" usually is selling your soul. So said person was selling their soul for nothing in exchange. An I.O.U. (I owe you) is a piece of paper with I.O.U. on it given to the person you owe something to.

By looking at the lyrics and reading the context:

 

I figured it out

I was high and low and everything in between

I was wicked and wild, baby, you know what I mean

Till there was you, yeah, you

 

Something went wrong

I made a deal with the devil for an empty I.O.U.

Been to hell and back, but an angel was looking through ...

 

I want to elaborate a little more on the meaning of these lyrics. Starting the song with the line "I figured it out" tells the listener that the singer now understands something that she couldn't see before. That she has something important to say, and she's about to tell us - so we should listen. "I was high and low and everything in between/I was wicked and wild, baby, you know what I mean" may literally mean that she was a drug user. I think that's the most likely meaning. However, the phrase "high and low ... " may also relate to the emotions or actions of anyone else who is troubled by something in life. That's the beauty of these lyrics, they apply to many people because there's room for interpretation. No matter what it was that was making her act the way she's saying, there was a strong force that was having a negative effect on her. She then ends the verse with "till there was you ... ," concluding that the introduction of a loved one into her life (the loved one being "the reason" that she will later mention) has made a huge impact on the way she was living. Perhaps this person may have even saved her from her own behavior.

 

"Something went wrong" brings the listener back to the singer's past troubles. We know that she has been saved from something that was destroying her, but she's now going to give us more detail about her journey. "I made a deal with the devil for an empty I.O.U/Been to hell and back ... " is the climax of this antidote she's giving us about her past. This is the singer saying that she hit rock-bottom -- she became so "wicked and wild" that she lost perspective completely, and played the devil character in her life (maybe her drug dealer) for a fool. Whoever was in her life that was enabling her to remain so self-destructive, she made angry. For that she was given punishment (maybe self inflicted, maybe from someone else). Things were made so much worse for her than they had been that she feels as if she had been to hell. However, this "reason," the loved one that was mentioned in the first verse, she now tell us saw her worse pain, and helped her save herself from it. Maybe this person gave her an intervention. Now that person is as important to her as drugs (or whatever else) once were.

 

I'm going to step in and say to anyone who thinks "Oh, Celine is talking about the devil and hell, she MUST be religious" that in a grammatical sense, if this were a religious song (and not a song using a religious metaphor), Hell or the Devil would be proper nouns. In the official lyrics, they're improper nouns. So, without further argument, they're being used as common phrases "going to hell and back, making a deal with the devil, etc."

 

 

I hope that helps some of you. Going through it bit by bit certainly helped me.

I take a little less of a concrete stance. To me it just sounds like life had really been going bad for her, beating her up, high and low and everything in between means she's seen just about everything there is to see, have every problem and pain there is to have. Made a deal with the devil for an empty i owe you...yeah, sold her soul for nothing, gave up everything for some empty promise, a supposed rainbow with a pot of gold that didn't turn up. Until this angel, who was there suddenly, made things okay.

1 Du Soleil Au Coeur

and 2 Des Mots Qui Sonnent

 

Are these both real/official albums or should I not waste my time/money? Anyone know?

As far as i can remember La Religieuse was released as a single in 1988. The video was Celine in a nun's habit, and the camera circling her. Haven't watched that for a while! Song was released on "the best of" album in 88 - also called Vivre in Germany. Only released on vinyl.
