"Ashes" - from Deadpool 2 - Official Topic

Uh oh... so did he just kill the song's chances of even getting nominated for the Oscars? tsk tsk tsk

I guess the article meant they found the track amongst existing demos.

The rules are indeed that the songs should be originally and specifically written for a motion picture. However, it was meant to prevent nominating songs that were used and sang before (i.e. no cover: reason why "I Will Always Love You" could not be nominated)

However, there have been songs that were existing prior to the use in films (e.g. from wikipedia):

"There was a debate as to whether or not Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who were awarded the Oscar in 2008 for "Falling Slowly", were in fact eligible. "Falling Slowly" had been released on two other albums – The Swell Season, Hansard and Irglova's duo project, and The Cost, by Hansard's band The Frames. The Swell Season was released in August 2006, and The Cost in February 2007, before the release of Once. However, the AMPAS music committee determined that, in the course of the film's protracted production, the composers had "played the song in some venues that were deemed inconsequential enough to not change the song's eligibility".[4]The same issue arose two years earlier with "In the Deep" from Crash, which appeared on Bird York's 2003 album The Velvet Hour after being written for Crash, but before the film was released. The current Academy rule says an eligible song "must be recorded for use in the motion picture prior to any other usage", so recordings released prior to the film will not disqualify a song as long as the film version was "recorded" before then.[3]

I suppose then that as Ashes has been recorded first for the movie, it should be eligible. ^_^

"Before the production settled on Celine Dion's "Ashes," Leitch considered using an artist like Adele, who sung the Oscar-winning theme toSkyfall. Reynolds, however, thought Dion was perfect since she's Canadian (just like himself) and because she sings "the ever-loving sh** out of that song."

"Celine hasn't done a song for a movie in a little while and it just felt like a perfect, ironic match," adds Reese.

Still, we're very curious how long Columbia had that gem lying around on the ol' curio shelf before Deadpool found it, dusted it off, and turned it into an international sensation."

She had just done BATB in less than one year lol. I guess Ryan wanted Céline so bad :giggle: :P

But even if they found the track from a group of demos, if those demos were really not "written specifically for the film," they are ineligible. In the Falling Slowly case, the issue was the "use" prior to the film... in Ashes' case, the issue is the song's "creation" itself and "purpose"... so whether or not Ashes was used prior to the movie's release, if it could be proven that the song and the songwriter did not have the film in mind when he or she wrote it, then it is ineligible.

What about "Because You Loved Me"? It was nominated for Oscar and I don't think it was actually witten just for Up Close and Personal. Or was it?

I believe not. BYLM was written in honor of Diane Warren's father. It's about the love she received from him. Later was recorded by Celine and then used in the movie OST. ;)

Actually in a recent Billboard article, Diane Warren even claimed that she was the one trying to push that the song is used in the film.

https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/podcasts/8257666/diane-warren-celine-dion-1996-countdown-chart-beat-podcast

"I feel like it was a leap in my craft," Warren says of "Because." "I felt that when I wrote that song, it was better than I was at the time, if that makes sense. I was like, 'Whoa, this is probably my best song.' There's something lyrically about it."

"Because" was released as both the lead single from Dion's first No. 1 Billboard 200album (of four), Falling Into You, and theme to the Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer movie Up Close & Personal. Despite her hit track record, Warren still had to convince director Jon Avnet to feature the song in the film. "He wasn't telling me for a couple months," she recalls. "I was like, 'You know this song's the one. Come on.' "

Don't think this was posted yet, but Celine appeared at #30 on New Zealand's Hot Singles Chart. It's not the official singles chart, but monitors "The 40 fastest-moving tracks by sales, streams and airplay."

I love that they ran this during the VMA's and then # them. It was a jab at them for not nominating them or even having Celine at the show.

I saw a bunch of tweets of people expecting and waiting for Celine to show up :(, and then so many disappointed that Madonna gave the tribute to Aretha and not Celine or someone else who's a vocalist.

Oh I'm glad Celine was nowhere near that debacle of a show!

MTV may have meant something in the 80s/90s, but now it's pure trash and nobody takes any music event they try to put on seriously. It's entirely inconsequential.

I completely agree with Rolling Stone on this one: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/mtv-vmas-2018-recap-madonna-ariana-grande-performances-aretha-franklin-713824/amp/

I've never watched music award shows so I wouldn't know but reading that article and people's comments makes me glad she didn't go then or was even nominated.

What music award shows are the more respectable ones?

The mtv organizer would rather go for rating with the current market audience than assessing the criteria of a good video.

They know the beliebers and alike are the ones tuning the award show.

All about business, unfortunately

Back then, my heart will go on got nominated in Europe MTV award, and even that i think mhwgn video is just an ordinary.

In the US, the Grammys are the most prestigious. Then you have the American Music Awards, The Billboard Music Awards...

His version is best for a game (end credits) like The Walking Dead. If you have played this type of game, this is the kind of music they put at the end of the game. GUITAR & STRINGS/VIOLINS

I watched parts of the show and i couldn't wait for the videos to finish..i was closing them one after the other..

Glad Celine didn't participate but i'm pretty sure that if she had performed at that show she would have been the only one to talk about..but then again we all know that class doesn't go along with trash
