Celine is the reason I am now fluent in French. Had I not been a fan of Celine, I would probably have stopped studying the language years ago, instead I carried on learning all through high school and I am now about to finish my degree in French & Economics

You're not alone. It's how I ended up learning French, too, and it's one of the main reasons I moved to Montreal for my undergrad (albeit not in French, but still).

And I'm fairly sure there are plenty more like us, so to all those who complained when Celine got her Legion d'honneur for her contribution to the French language - take note.

I re-discovered the album Celine Dion a few weeks ago, and yeah you are right, from start to end it just flows.

ALL the songs are good and amazing.

 

With LMBTL it would first be a "nightgown" album she said, than a vegas album, then 50/50 new and vegas, and we got uptempo new sound, adele, vegas, thrown together on 1 disc.

 

I really wonder how this album will be, considering she started recording last year before Rene's passing, and after.

Curious if it had any impact on song choices and "theme"

Celine is a treasure to la francophonie. Many of us learned French for her. I got my Master's in French littérature, compared Molière's plays to her songs, and now teach French.

Haha and the other way around is also true. Celine's "Falling Into You" booklet was the first thing i read in English. I was about 8 or 9. I tried to enunciate clearly all the words and tried to understand them fully. So i started learning English because of Celine.

 

I remember listening to "Make You Happy" and thought she was saying "Homosapiens" right at the beginning of the song (its the same word in French). That's when i thought to myself: i better start learning English...

True. In my particular case, Celine's music encouraged me to take French lessons for 2 years before I started studying Translation and Interpretation at the University. Thanks to those two years of French lessons (and to Celine of course) I can now speak 4 languages and I'm planning to start studying a fifth one

1f&4t it's pure bliss to my ears lately. What hurts the most is that Céline herself rarely looks back to her past albums to give them some credit, not even to acknowledge that this or that piece of work was a work well done.

 

D'eux had most of its songs performed on the stage, but then SSDA started to suffer the consequences of Céline's rise to stardom: an excessive focus on a selection of songs that hit the charts in 1995, but forgetting that the rest of her albums still had many great songs to be presented to the public, both before D'eux and then after D'eux when SSDA was released (En attendant ses pas, Tous les blues sont écrits pour toi, L'abandon...) and then 1f&4t, D'elles, which suffered almost total neglection in her future concerts.

 

PQTME is to he French career as MHWGO to her English career. Both have eclipsed many Celine albums that could have enjoyed great success if they had been brought to the stage in time, instead of always singing the same hits for decades to come

This strategy makes sense, in fact, I think that "Encore Un Soir" could be the new opening song.

I really, REALLY want a collaboration with Elvis Costello. Because he can do any genre (including fabulous torch songs), and is one of the best English language songwriters on the planet.

 

Probably a snowball's chance in hell, but hey, a girl can dream. Seems I'm not alone though!

The second Overjoyed kicks in it's like you walked straight into a brick wall. For me it completely ruins the vibe and mood of the album.

Each time the song comes on when I listen to the album I think, what is this? Then I hear the birds chirping and I hit skip, to the next song, which interesting enough is Thankful. Believe me, I'm thankful Overjoyed had been skipped. Haha

Eddy Marnay, Luc Plamondon, Jean-Jacques Goldman... each provided their art to create masterpieces in the end.

 

But what was revelated to me in "1 fille & 4 types" album is that other songwriters like Erick Benzi and Jacques Veneruso, who have been more in the shadow in Céline's career, they are incredibly talented too. And what's more, what these people can do when they work together in a same project is just AMAZING. These two guys haven't had the same participation and recognition in Céline's career as Jean-Jacques, but wow, these men do know how to write good songs and touch your emotions as well. Their songs are poetry in its best form (read "Apprends-moi" lyrics for example )

 

When you request an album to a sole author, the album can have many great songs, but maybe not all of them. There can be highs and lows, even fillers, and the author may feel the pressure to write 10 or 12 great songs, all and each of them, which is quite hard (that's why I can understand that Jean-Jacques Goldman has always refused to write a third album for Céline in its entirety, because the pressure is huge).

 

But when you gather 3 or 4 different songwriters together to do one same project, it is then when they do their best and each deliver the best songs they can write. To me, that's what happened with this album. Each author gave its best, and that shows in the album. There's not a bad song in it, nor a filler. That RARELY happens in any album, very rarely.

 

We need another album with 3-4 good songwriters, no more, and a coordinator that supervises the sound of the whole project. Then, I'm pretty sure we could have another memorable Céline album coming with very few disappointments (if any)

 

Who's up to see Céline forming a band with Jean-Jacques, Erick Benzi, Jacques Veneruso, Gildas Arzel and taking the road again?
