Following literally years of speculation and rumors, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today introduced the iPhone, a sleek all-in-one device combining a mobile phone, widescreen iPod, and internet communicator. The iPhone boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display and runs a version of Apple’s Mac OS X operating system with an innovative new user interface for using just a finger to control the device on-screen.

It comes in two capacities—4GB and 8GB—and includes support for quad-band GSM, EDGE, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR wireless technologies. The iPhone also sports a built-in 2 megapixel camera and will work with Macs or PCs. Apple’s Jobs confirmed that the exclusive carrier for the iPhone will be Cingular.

Jobs said the phone is 11.6mm thin—thinner than any smartphone available, including the Motorola Q and Samsung BlackJack. The iPhone has built-in sensors—an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor—that serve to automatically rotate the display from portrait to landscape, and to turn off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches. Battery life is said to be 5 hours for talk time, video or browsing, and 16 hours of audio playback.

The iPhone will be available in June. The 4GB iPhone model will sell for $499, while the 8GB model will sell for $599, each with 2-year contracts. Apple said Cingular will announce service plans for the iPhone before it begins shipping in June. The iPhone will be available in Europe in late 2007, and Asia in 2008. Jobs said he was announcing it today and shipping nearly six months from now because Apple needs FCC approval. The iPhone will sell in Apple Stores and Cingular stores.

Users are able to make calls in several different ways, including simply pointing at a name or number with their finger. The iPhone syncs contacts from a PC, Mac or Internet service, and allows users to easily create conference calls. Another new feature called Visual Voicemail lets users look at a list of their voicemails, choose which messages to listen to, then go directly to those messages without having to sit through prior messages. The iPhone also includes an SMS application with a full QWERTY screen-based touch keyboard to easily send and receive SMS messages in multiple sessions.

In addition to a mobile phone, the iPhone includes a major new iPod portion. The device features touch controls for play-pause, chapter forward-backward and volume. To go along with the iPhone’s widescreen display, there’s now a Cover Flow view for browsing your music library by album cover artwork. (The iPhone is switched automatically to Cover Flow view by simply rotating the device into its landscape position.) Movies and TV shows are obviously also now viewable in a full widescreen view.

The iPhone runs a slimmed-down version of Mac OS X, including email, web browsing, searching and maps. A rich HTML email client fetches email in the background from most POP3 or IMAP mail services and displays photos along with the text. The iPhone comes with a mobile version of Apple’s Safari web browser, allowing users to view web pages as they appear on a PC, and then zoom in to expand any section by simply tapping on iPhone’s multi- touch display with their finger. The iPhone also includes Google Maps for viewing maps, satellite images, traffic information and directions. The iPhone also includes a calendar application and a photo management application, which can be automatically synced with your PC or Mac.

Several iPhone accessories will also be available in June, including a new Bluetooth wireless headset and new pair of iPod-like earbuds with integrated microphone.

it's deadly but i know it'll be so expensive when it comes to Europe. all i really want is just an ipod version of that without the phone features. an ipod that has a widescreen like the iphone. are they going to make one like that just to upgrade the current ipod??

It's quite cheap comparing to the typical price for new cellphones in Thailand such as Samsung's. Anyway, I thought it was like adding cellphones function into iPod. I want it too!

surprizingly I actually DON`T want it...I prefer my mp3 player to be separate from my phone. Looks cool though

The 8GB model costs the same price as my Dolce&Gabbana Razr and is SOOOO MUUUUCHHHH MORE LOADED!!! If I hadn't purchased the phone I have now I would have gotten the iPhone in a flash! :wacko:

I guess I'll wait a year or so, because maybe by then they'll put even cooler things into the iPhone! :w00t:

ok so the iphone will be available for purchase on the 29th of this month! I really want this phone, but the more I read about the less I want it.

First the price is ridiculous: $499 for a 4gb and $599 for an 8gb

Then you need to sign a 2 yr contract and add a $29.99 data plan

Now I am hearing there is no USB connection, and there is No MMS!!!!!!!!!!!!! (This was a major blow to me! I use MMS everyday!)

• The iPhone is a communications mixed bag, with support for IMAP, POP3 and Yahoo Push e-mail. It will automatically recognise phone numbers in e-mail messages and provide one-click access to dialling them. However, it will not support Multimedia Messaging Service, so users won't be able to send text messages with pictures or video to other cell phone users. No, I don't and I'm glad I don't.

My family uses Cingular (well.... it's now AT&T) and have had so many negative experiences with them. I hope that with AT&T's acquisition, everything would be better.

I'm a T-mobiler :w00t:

Anyway, the new iPhones are available exclusively through the AT&T service. I think I'm not under any kind of contractual obligations, so I can switch if I want.

But, I break everything - on Monday, I spilled water on my laptop, which is still being repaired, and I always sit on my phone and break it.

It's a lovely-looking phone, but I know it wouldn't last for long in my possession. :cry:

I have Cingular and i am ready for a chance as currently i have a Motorola phone (which was dropped like 10 times). i wanted to buy a Blackberry Pearl but now i think my fiance and i will both upgrade to iPhone.

Apple's iPhone touts a better battery life and a more durable screen

Apple announced on Monday that the iPhone will deliver higher talk time than originally expected. The iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time giving it the highest battery life of any other competing phone.

Apple's new phone will also deliver 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback. The iPhone will also feature 250 hour—more than 10 days—of standby time.

The company also upgraded the screen on the phone from plastic to optical-quality glass. The new upgrade gives the phone a scratch-resistant screen and better visibility.

“There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can't wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

Apple's iPhone measures 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.46" and weighs just 4.8 ounces. All input is entered via the device's 3.5" Multi-touch display which features a screen resolution of 320x480. The iPhone runs OS X and includes quad-band GSM/EDGE, 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity options.

The iPhone is set for release on June 29 at Apple online and retail stores and select AT&T retail stores for $499 and $599 respectfully (with 2-year contract) for the 4GB and 8GB versions.

Not bad now. The unremoveable battery problem is smaller if the battry lasts longer. A scratch-resistant screen is good too.

I like the idea of the iphone, however I just bought a phone yesterday. I got the enV, and yes, I am a Verizon person. For some reason, in my area, T-mobile, and Cingular do not work good. Everyone who used to have those, switched to Verizon due to bad connection and lost calls all the time. I even have one friend who used to have T-mobile that they would turn her phone off every month even though she payed her bill way early. So weird! Anyway, I'm looking for someone who could tell me how to put mp3's on a enV.? Any smart people out there?? :giggle:

The phone seems cool, but I can't believe people going to stand in line for hours to get the thing the day it comes out or pay someone double retail to get it from someone. If people just wait a few weeks they can probably get them without waiting in line. Also, it's overpriced. :shrug:

Yeah, you know other companies will be coming out with alternatives soon.

A few years ago my provider was AT&T. I, believe it or not, did not use my phone much at that time and I had the cheapest plan they offered. It was around $30 and the amount of minutes was really low, but it worked out for

me. I wanted a razor phone when they came out and they had some really good deals but AT&T was sort of gone,

supposedly, so I had to go with Cingular. Now they are changing to AT&T?! So is the Cingular name going away?

I have not had problems with them so I can't complain. These companies are always changing! :angry2:

I don't want it... am I the only one? I think I'm just too Microsoft-y. I went into Cingular the other day (AT&T) to simply lower my plan, and we mentioned to the guy that we both work for Microsoft... and there are SO many perks I didn't know about about! Long story short, we walked out of there with two brand new FREE phones - the AT&T 8525
