You Belong With Me is the most pop song on an album that is already pushing it's "Country" label, and now there's a Pop mix? Ridiculous! The mix is awful, like any Pop mix of a Country song. Black Kitten Posted June 13, 2009 at 02:02 PM Posted June 13, 2009 at 02:02 PM Kelly Clarkson Listens to Taylor Swift An 'Idol' Trains Her Ear Across Pop Soundscape FEW artists anointed by "American Idol" have enjoyed the success and longevity of the pop singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson. Since she won the title in the show's first season seven years ago, she has earned two Grammys and sold more than 10 million records in the United States. Her fourth album, "All I Ever Wanted" (RCA), was released in March and hit the top of the Billboard chart. Ms. Clarkson, 27, lives in Texas, where she keeps 8 dogs, 10 horses and a newly rescued diabetic cat. She has been busy preparing for a slew of summer concerts and a big fall tour, but on a rare day off in her Los Angeles hotel, after a trip to the gym and the bookstore, she spoke by phone with Winter Miller about what she's listening to now. Kings of LeonI saw them open for U2 in Madison Square Garden. I was so pumped because I'd never seen U2, but my brother and I went away huge Kings of Leon fans. We had never heard of them. They were so tight and in sync. I didn't find out until this year that they were related. The rock category is not rock anymore, so I love that they're a rock band. Nothing about them is not rock. "Use Somebody" from "Only by the Night" (RCA) is my favorite song of the year. It's almost hypnotic. Before the melody even, it feels like that scene from "City of Angels" where she's riding a bike down the hill. A lot of their songs remind me of soundtracks because they're so epic. Taylor SwiftI love "Fearless" (Big Machine). I just recently ran into her, and I was like, "If you ever want to have any songs on my album, I'd be happy to hear them." Like, if she doesn't want it for herself. She's a great lyricist. It doesn't seem like she's trying to write No. 1 songs. She's crossing over into pop, which is weird because most country fans don't cross over into pop. But she writes pop songs and simple fairy-tale ballads. Her melodies are addictive. She's so young. People have not gotten hold of her yet and beaten her and said you have to write No. 1's. She's just writing how she writes. It's a breath of fresh air. The ScriptThey're an Irish band. My sister found "The Script" (Arista) on iTunes. They're so diverse. It sounds like U2 meets Sting on one song, then like OneRepublic meets rap. There's a lead singer, but also a lead guitarist who sings, and the drummer sings in this high falsetto. Their song "Rusty Halo" is almost like a spiritual thing. Their songs tend to build and lead to beautiful climaxes with great vocal harmonies. Their lyrics are very clever. They twist words to where it's mind-boggling. PinkI think everybody's a fan of Pink. Her voice is the best of our generation. Her lyrics are so vulnerable. She's so open about her whole life. People love that. "Crystal Ball" reminds me of Pink singing the Carpenters. She's the kind of person you want to be friends with, but you're scared of her. Her albums are laced with sarcasm; they're hilarious. I saw her in Germany. She was flying all over the place, flipping around, and was upside down singing - live. It's an incredible show. WeezerI've been a huge fan since junior high. It's like comic relief with their songs, like "Pork and Beans." Their songs make me want to be a boxer for some reason. "Weezer" (Interscope) has some really intense songs. Rivers Cuomo is really smart, and he's a great lyricist. Even if he's being simple, you have to really pay attention. I can't listen to one of their albums and not revert back to being a kid, like listening to my Walkman when I'm supposed to be paying attention in class. Weezer made me want to be a musician. Quote

Black Kitten Posted June 14, 2009 at 11:45 AM Posted June 14, 2009 at 11:45 AM SOUNDS: Taylor Swift sits atop charts wearing her heart on her sleeve LAS VEGAS — She both looks younger and sounds older than a 19-year-old. Willowy blonde Taylor Swift hurls her feelings at you like a heart-shaped javelin, coming across as the kind of good-natured girl next door who dots her i’s with little smiley faces. But beneath the effervescence, the soda pop bubbliness, there’s a self-assertiveness that belies Swift’s wide-eyed charm. This is a young lady who won a national poetry contest in the fourth grade, who started writing and performing her own songs at age 10 and who, with but two albums under her belt, already has penned more tunes than Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyonc/ have in their entire careers. We’ve come to expect less and less from our pop stars, male or female, settling for the kind of elaborate dance routines normally reserved for the Ice Capades, lots of hammy glamour, lip synced gigs and the perfect, plastic sheen of sexy action figures. Sure, you’ve probably seen Swift’s porcelain-smooth features staring back at you from the cover of this fashion rag or that while standing in the checkout line at Albertsons, but she’s different than her Barbie brethren. For instance, even though she’s found fame at a relatively early age, she wasn’t exactly groomed for it. “The way I grew up, I was raised by a very realistic and practical mom,” Swift says. “I would be at talent shows and festivals, and I would run into the other girls who wanted to be singers and their moms, and they would always walk up to every single new person they met and say, ‘This is my daughter so-and-so, she’s going to be famous some day.’ “My mom and I were always so completely opposite of that, because my mom never wanted to promise me anything that she didn’t know was going to happen,” Swift continues. “My mom never, ever would say things to me like, ‘Don’t worry, honey, you’re going to be a singer some day.’ She didn’t know if that was true, and I didn’t know, so I kind of went about it not really expecting success.” Still, it’d be hard to describe Swift’s rise to an arena-filling attraction as anything but fairy tale-like. Since issuing her triple platinum 2006 self-titled debut, Swift notched the biggest selling album of 2008 with her sophomore release, “Fearless,” which spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard album chart, the longest run in nearly a decade. She became the first country artist to notch more than 2 million downloads of three different songs, laid claim to the most downloaded country song ever with her smash hit “Love Story” and is the rare act to keep posting big numbers as the music industry continues to recede saleswise. Swift’s appeal, however, is easy to discern. Her songs are unabashedly open-hearted and near-blushworthy on some occasions, a big bundle of coming-of-age uncertainty distilled into hummable form. Her tunes are posited on a series of firsts — first dates, first crushes, first kisses, the first day of high school — and unlike many of her peers, Swift seldom sees herself as the object of desire. Instead, she’s the self-effacing suitor, the overlooked catch, forever in pursuit of the boy who doesn’t seem to know she even exists. “All of those other girls, well, they’re beautiful, but would they write a song for you?” Swift asks a would-be beau on “Hey, Stephen,” a sweet-voiced little pop come-on that floats by on soft tendrils of organ. Despite her photogenic allure, Swift always seems to see herself as the oddball stuck in English class, rolling her eyes at the cool kids. “She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts. She’s cheer captain, I’m on the bleachers,” Swift sighs on the banjo-flecked “You Belong With Me.” In this way, Swift strives to be more relatable than most stars of her magnitude. Few of us know what it feels like to be a pop pinup, but who can call themselves a stranger to unrequited love? Ultimately, it’s this longing that colors much of Swift’s catalog. She trades in vulnerability, but stops short of being overwhelmed by it. If there’s such a thing as emo country, this would be its poster girl. And as for the whole country thing, Swift belongs to that crowd largely in name only, as her sprightly, lovelorn pop has little in common with a traditional honky-tonk swing other than the occasional fiddle. Still, she does embrace the genre’s populist, of-the-people appeal, and because of this, she’s found a home in Nashville. Even the way Swift’s built her career speaks directly to the blue-collar bona fides that country music espouses. From the time she was a freshman in high school, Swift was attending class by day and hitting the recording studio at night. “I was living a little bit of a double life,” she says. “And then, at the end of my sophomore year, I went on tour, and that’s when things changed dramatically.” She’s been on the road or making records ever since. Currently, Swift’s ensconced on her first headlining tour, a victory lap of sorts to commemorate the success of “Fearless.” Swift sketched the stage design that she’s using for the tour while she was pretending to pay attention in school a few years back, and, incredibly enough, it’s actually come to fruition. Speaking with her these days, she still sounds like a kid in the back of class, caught up in a bunch of daydreams that have somehow become reality. “Every day is a pleasant surprise for me,” Swift says, “because I never really thought this was going to happen.” Quote

I think that she is way better than Carrie Underwood. Even when she was little, she was so cute and she still maintained that cuteness.i agree she looks way prettier than Carrie Underwood, but vocally, she (Taylor) still pales in comparison. i love Taylor's voice. i find it really sweet. she sings better than Britney Spears. but she still has to work on her live performances. her performance of Should've Said No at the CMA was horrible and her Grammy Nomination performance was not any better. BUT her songwriting prowess makes it up and conceals her shortcomings as a vocalist. (the AOL Session performance was amazing though. she sounded incredible there). Taylor Swift the CMT princessAfter an entertaining gangsta-rap duet video with T-Pain, Taylor Swift got back in character Tuesday night as the princess of the Country Music Television Awards. Her Romeo-Juliet "Love Story" won the 19-year-old singer her second straight pair of fan-dictated awards for Video of the Year and Female Video of the Year. Fans bestowed Male Video of the Year on Brad Paisley's "Waitin' on a Woman." Also, Paisley won best collaboration for "Start a Band" with Keith Urban. Finally, Paisley shared the performance win for "Country Boy" with Alan Jackson, Dierks Bentley and George Strait. Like last year, Rascal Flatts again won for Group Video, this time for "Every Day," and Sugarland won Duo Video of the Year again, this time for "All I Want to Do." Quote
