What do I think about Aretha? Let's see...

 

Granted, she has some good songs that are very well known. She indeed has a very powerful voice, which is a God givent talent.

 

However, I do not want to seem totally crude, but I think she is completely overrated. When she is on stage with other sings, why does she have to be so egotistical to the point of singer louder and higher and stealing other the thunder from other individuals?

 

So, yes, I do think she is overrated, egotistical, arrogant, unpleasant, and full of attitude.

 

And does she even own a mirror? I cannot believe she gets away with wearing some of her outfits. If she thinks she looks good, then I think she often looks like a total disaster!

Well, I think she is another of the best singers of all time, and she has influenced many of today's singers without them even know it. But yet, I don't like her attitud when she's onstage with other singers, like we saw on Divas 98. She deserves respect, yes, just like Celine, Whitney, Mariah, Diana, etc...

Indeed. They were the divas that night, though i wished Mariah also belt out because we shouldn't expect Shania nor Gloria to belt out since they cannot hit high notes.

As far as vocal technique goes she's really solid. Celine couldn't get away with so much "screaming" (in reality a very twanged mix). But that's the privilege of black people. As far as her musicianship goes, which she was given a lot of credit for, to me it's horrible. It dazzles me that a lot of her fans and celebrities consider her a great musician. I would die if I had to write a song for her, she'd completely assassinate, stab and tear it up until there's nothing left of the song but a bloody puddle. I think it wasn't until the latter part of her career when the excessive screeching came on. Her classics like Respect, Chain of Fools and Natural Woman are relatively restrained.

 

I find her tone annoying but her discography is among the best of all time. Celine's English catalog SIMPLY pales in comparison.

I think Aretha has amazing songs, but they are all mostly Soul (that's why she's the Queen of Soul, right) but Celine is most complete... Like, Celine has many different kinds of music in her discography that Aretha doesn't IMHO. But I like Aretha also, I think she's one of the best just like our Celine and others...

Definitely !!! I don't think Aretha has invented nothing... But she's great... And I'd love to be able to, at least, sing a bit of how she does...

I used to find her a screeching harpy, but then I realized that she wasn't always like that. If you listen to her older recordings, and I mean up through the 80's, she actually had a pleasant tone, wonderful nuanced vocal performances, and wasn't always so hellbent on overpowering everyone else, even when giving glory notes. (Just listen to "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" with George Michael. She gave him room to strut his stuff too.) Her glory notes now are shrill, but in the day, "glory" was the perfect word to describe it. I think her reputation as one of the greatest singers of all time is absolutely deserved. Well, I was talking about quality of lyrics and influence on popular music. Hard to deny Aretha in those areas.

I kinda disagree with this especially that Celine has more popular songs as well as more immortal songs.

 

It's just that it's more fun and enjoying to sing Aretha's popular songs because most of Celine's popular songs are ballads.
