carmGel55 Posted November 19, 2008 at 09:15 AM Posted November 19, 2008 at 09:15 AM I always think that Aretha Franklin is awesome and so damn Great, not to mention that she is the Queen of Soul. i only knew Aretha back at 2004 when i watched the DVD of Divas live 1998. and i was so blown away by her! i think celine and aretha only are the "DIVA" of that night. anyway, since then, i became a fan of her. i collected songs of her and play and listen to it. however, my mom says that: "She's like a screaming cat", my grandmother told me that "she seems having an agonizing pinch to her sex organ when she sings" -that was brutal!!! because of her voice and my friends testified that "if their voice is like that, they will not be idolize by many". i don't know, i beg to disagree with those statements. what i listen frequently to her songs are those of the 90's and up, which has a big difference in terms of her voice back in her heydays. so what can you say to her? you're opinion to her? PS. i was able to watch some recent videos of her at youtube, and she still sings good and live. Bottom line: I adore her! even though she's old. doesn't matter. Quote
amyja89 Posted November 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM Posted November 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM I love Aretha. My favourite song by her is Don't Play That Song, it's amazing! Quote

corr_azy Posted November 21, 2008 at 08:46 AM Posted November 21, 2008 at 08:46 AM I love Aretha! Although her voice has dwindled quite a bit. During her peak, no one could belt like she did. And she's a legend, if it wasn't for her, there wouldn't be Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Beyonce, Christina and so many of the female singers out there. IMO, the stuff from her Atlantic days were her very best, but she's never really matched up to the success of those years. Quote

Céline's Blues Posted November 21, 2008 at 10:45 AM Posted November 21, 2008 at 10:45 AM She has been an immense influence on many singers of this generation and more. This fact is undeniable. Love, Posted November 21, 2008 at 01:10 PM Posted November 21, 2008 at 01:10 PM (edited) She has conquered a lot in her amazing career. There's no doubt about that. And she deserves all the R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The thing that bothers me most is when she dresses herself up for a formal affair in something skimpy. KIDS: BEWARE http://www.newlincreative.com/aretha_franklin_statehood.html ARETHA FRANKLIN'S BREASTS APPLY FOR STATEHOODRepublicans Worry That New 'Boob' States Would Support Democrats DETROIT -- Aretha Franklin is behind, literally, a growing movement to grant statehood to her two enormous breasts. "The two masses have a an area in square miles the equivalent of Vermont and New Hampshire, and I see no compelling reason that they should not be granted statehood," says the movement's spokesperson, Harry Smiderson. Republicans in Washington are terrified that the movement may gain momentum in the current anti-Bush atmosphere. "Two large, African-American breasts are likely to generate senators and representatives that vote along with the democrats, and this is a scenario we cannot allow," says National Republican Party spokesperson, Roger Snick. Ms. Franklin has refused to comment to media about the issue. I'm sure she's self-conscious and I'm sure she does this intentionally... Edited November 21, 2008 at 01:13 PM by Love, Quote
pat200 Posted November 21, 2008 at 03:52 PM Posted November 21, 2008 at 03:52 PM (edited) the 60s and 70s Aretha was one of the best the world ever saw. since then she became an utter mess in her performances, wanting to outsing everyone even if that meant screaming and no longer singing, and this has been her pattern since. but overall, lady soul deserves respect, even though i find that she has been highly over rated since the mid-80s. I would argue that celine is more influenced by the barbra streisand line (barbra is aretha's peer). and she was influenced by judy garland. more classic broadway/traditional/torch singer influences rather than soul like aretha. although obviously celine has her moments with melisma now and then but she's never been considered to have soul Edited November 21, 2008 at 09:50 PM by Your_Su_Phu Quote
