Putting that into quantity, OMG, I've spent around $5000 on gas!

Is that where my money has gone? :o

Well I average 25,000 miles a year which I consider to be a lot so if you are putting that much on in nine months I would say that you drive a lot! But cars are meant to be driven, so it's ok. The only problem is the FUEL that we have to put in the thing.

Kim I'll give you my advice on hybrids. Don't buy one.

 

There's nothing wrong with them but most of them cost a lot. A Prius is about $30,000 and the gas mileage is better than most cars but we are not at the point where it's THAT much better. For half the price you could buy a Civic or Corolla that still gets good mileage. Plus, no one talks about this but when the batteries for those cars have to be replaced they are very expensive. At least over $1000 for the battery(s) for those things.

At our company we have several people who are driving 60 to 70.000km each year (40 to 45.000 miles). At my previous employer (one of the biggest crane rental companies worldwide, the Belgian Sarens Group) we had someone who drove actually more than 100.000km / 60.000 miles each year... She was one of the owners of the company who worked always on the accountant department until the day she retired. After her retirement she started to drive arround for the company as a sort of express delivery with her car. Until this day she is still driving arround in Europe to the subsidiaries to transport documents or small spare parts of cranes. When I left the company 6 years ago she was in her 70's and still driving about 100.000km each year. Even today when she's close to her eighties she is still driving arround for the company doing several ten thousands miles each year Every year and a half to two years she ordered a new car

A Hybrid is indeed not a good option at this moment. They are rather expensive and are not that good for the environment than the constructors would everyone like to believe. The production of the heavy batteries used in hybrid cars is very bad for the environment so it is actually better to buy a regular car if you concern about the environment.

 

Also the replacement of the batteries is very expensive. For a Prius it could easily top 3 to 4.000 USD. The batteries should be good for about 260.000km but some are holding only to a little above 160.000km's

 

A diesel powered cars is the better choice since it's more economic to drive. In several countries diesel is also cheaper then gas. Unfortunately a diesel powered car produces very small particles of soot but that can be prevented by buying a car with a diesel particle filter. I also prefer a diesel powered car since it hase a lot of torque compared to a gas powered car.

 

For hybrids I think it will be best to wait until lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries can be used but that can take another couple of years...

She has driven Volkwagen Passat but since about 10 years she prefers a Citroën (a French car). First it was a Citroën Xantia stationwagon but the last 3 cars were Citroën C5's, all with an automatic transmission and powered with a diesel engine. She actually doesn't like a Mercedes. When I worked there I tried to talk her into a Mercedes but she just wanted a Citroën...

Be patient Kim. You'll be able to get one some day soon. I took out a six year loan on my car and I'm not even half way through it! Hopefully you will be able to put more money down on your car than I did so you won't have such a long payment time!
