Are you a lyrics person or a melodic one?

I always wonder about this coz Celine is always called schmultzy etc because of her 'sappy' and 'cheesy' lyrics etc. But im awful for not ACTUALLY listening to lyrics at all! haha i couldnt tell you what half celines songs even say in them haha (obviously they have alove theme) but i coudlnt tell you what they actually say in them. I love the melodies and thats all I care about! haha Is that weird? Im like it with all songs though. I never listen to a song and am like...."this is my song....its about me!" - i just wanna sing along.

hahaha well that's a good question!! Well I guess (and maybe also a lot of fans with me, who don't speak french) when it comes to french songs I'm more about the melody and the way she sings. Because I only understand 10% she sings, I'm more into melody

 

her english songs are different.... understanding the words makes it easier to make it your own. It's not like I pay attention to the lyrics all the time, but sometimes it just hits home... even when the lyrics has nothing to do with the actual situation; I was listening to I surrender when my grandmother recently died and I heard

aww. yeh know what u mean. With me though its more the music, the arrangement in a certian part of a song that get me and the lyrics just enhance it.

I'm definitely a melodic person. the first thing i hear in a song is the music not the lyrics and this is what make me love or dislike a song. I like simple lyrics, i don't want to analyze the text to understand what it means.

I wanna know what the songs about, how different people relate it to their lives, what the writer was thinking when he or she wrote the song etc etc. Which would be why I'm learning French. Me too.

The first thing I pay attention to is the melody. If it's a kind of music I don't like, I don't spend my time reading the lyrics.

But if the melody is good, well, it's not enough. I need to find something special in the lyrics, something deep!!! I wanna descover a "soul" in those words!

Definitely the lyrics! I could never understand how people can listen to a song without hearing what it's all about..

I want to know the story in the song, hear about the feelings, hear how creative people can be in describing the same things.. I don't want to analyze it to the core, but sometimes the lyrics just hit you... Although if I don't like the melody I won't listen to it. 'With this tear' for example has beautiful lyrics to it but it's sooo booooooring. I can't listen to it... Just the one time; to know what it was about.

It's mainly because I got hooked up to Celine when I didn't speak nor understand English at all. "THink twice" was that song. It had something in the melody, the way Celine delivers the song...I fell in love immediately

The same thing happens with tons of her french gems.

Later, when I learnt English, I realized many of those songs I loved were great (I don't believe the lyrics are cheesy at all), but those songs trascended language for me, all the way.

It's a tough question, Tom cuzz it automatically challenges the notion of Céline NOT being able to deliver both. She very well can. Almost every of JJG's original tunes (i.e. those that havn't been written for Céline) has a catchy tempo and melody. One doesn't exclude the other.

 

Catchiness of a song is just limited by artist's abilities. If Céline were more involved in the producing process she'd be way better off than being doomed for a producer's mercy. She can have catchy melody and MESMERIZING lyrics: En attendant ses pas, A Cause or L'abandon are just some of the examples.

 

And that's why I think I am very much in the middle. I love catchy melodies but they have to be on par with the lyrics - let's take Mylene farmer. Do you think a tune that DEFINES catchiness

Yes, they indeed talk about such things! Their melodies are HELLA catchy and their lyrics are state of art actually as well.

 

Thus you can have it both way. Céline as well. So no pardon from me for Céline singing shallowness in English. Not one bit. I will be the first one to speak up if she sings shallowness again in English or French.

Without a doubt I'm a melodic person, of course I listen to the words eventually and then come to find the hidden meaning and all that stuff but the songs have to have to have the melody for me. When I first got Taking Chances I always skipped My Love, I just wasn't drawn to it, it wasn't until I watched the recording session and I really listened to the lyrics and understood the emotion behind the song. But yeah I'm a melody girl all the way!

Exactly the same here! It's the melody that first gets me, then I start to really listen to the words, and find the hidden meaning and so on. Though there are still songs in which I know all the lyrics, but I really couldn't tell what the song's about.. So for those I've just learnt the lyrics but haven't really paid attention to the meaning of the song..

Then again, the lyrics can make a "melodically" (?) less good song better! And they can also make a melodically already very good song really fantastic!

 

I'm all into words too, and I like to learn all the songs by heart (and do it easily), but that's also because of the pronounciation, I like to read out loud and pronounce the words (I mean generally too, not just in songs) and think about the words that way, how they are pronounced and how they sound.. I'm not very good at explainig this.

 

Finally I think it's the melody and lyrics together that make the song work after all!

I think both melody and lyrics are important to me. When I hear a song for the first time I pay attention to the melody and how the song sounds like. Then I start listening to the lyrics. A song must have both good lyrics and a great melody to become one of my favourites.
