Here’s tonight’s case: at a recent concert at the Colisée Pepsi de Québec, Céline did not wear the expected fuchsia Balmain dress (you know the one). Instead, she donned a very pretty orchid dress, short with elongated leaf-like structures that start at the back, curve horizontally around to the front, but do not meet and leave the front plain. It’s quite lovely, and Céline wears it extremely well. My question: Who designed it?

Allie - The peach Chanel dress took FOREVER to find (it's frustrating when you know the designer but can't find a pic of it anywhere), so I'd say that's the one

Speaking of that Balmain dress, do you know why it stains so badly like this Frida? It's even been picked up by one or two newspaper reviewers who commented on it.

Is it sweat, all the body glitter she uses, just the fabric? You can even see some patches on the catwalk model so I don't know if it's just a really absorbant fabric. I guess the fact it is so pale won't help.

I realize now that both concert dresses are Balmain. I prefer this one over the other, even as the latter has become something of a signature dress for the concert tour. I prefer it because it is softer, more interesting in design, and it brings out Celine's finer features, especially her long neck and legs. The color is also perfect for her, and she looks astonishing in it. The other, by comparison, looks hem heavy. It boxes in the torso and is distractingly ornate and color-saturated. The mid-section is just not right.

 

In any event, my original post was just my way of thanking you for making this one of the most fun and interesting topics in the Forum. You've a great eye for design, and I'd bet a great future in the fashion industry - that is, if that is not already the case.

PS On second thought, the back is not at all attractive. From the front, it is still a very pretty dress. Still, the other seems to "wear" Celine. Thomas, what do you think?

This one is also Balmain and it was used for the first leg of the tour. I personally don't rate the pale lilac dress very highly, under the spotlights it looks insipid and washed out, plus the fact it stains so easily. Up close it also looks really worn, the fabric is bobbly and it looks a bit thrown together and tatty. I think the fuschia dress was amazing, in person it just hits you. Perfect for a concert and the detailing on the hips is stunning. The black dress is my second favourite, the detailing on this one is also amazing but with it being black it doesn't really stand out and draw your eye like the others do.

Thanks, Thomas. You really have found the photographs that best represent your point of view. I understand your feeling about the lilac dress, but it still seems more suitably refined (is there a better word?) for Celine; specifically, the vertical lines are more delicate, and that combined with the lilac hue and supple fabric make the overall effect more feminine. To me, the other two dresses border dangerously on the "Gone with the Wind" style of dressmaking- you know, made from old drapes. In addition, both are too thick and busy, as is the back of the lilac dress.

 

In any event, I know when I am out of my league. I admit I know nothing about fashion. However, I do know enough to say that Celine is one of those rare people who can look chic in jeans. I also thought she looked wonderful in what she wore to accept the Legion d'honneur in Paris last year. Did you?

Thomas, if you look at the rest of the Balmain collection you can see that there's a tie dyed theme. A number of the clothes are tie dyed, the lavender dress is one of them.

Interesting! The "stains" change position regularly so I guess if she has a few of the same dress this could explain the fact they're different from show to show. Truly terrible design decision to have sweat-like markings like this on such a pale dress.
