I was at the Boutique while I was in Vegas and I was looking at the French version. I almost bought it but I figured that since I don't speak or read French I wouldn't get a whole lot of use out of it so I decided to spend my $36.00 on other useless memorabila. LOL

It's that time again - the season when I survey all the books pouring in, carefully assess each title and pose the sort of piercing question that crosses the minds of only the most incisive book editors: Who the heck in God's name buys these colossal coffee-table thingamajigs?

Yep. The annual crush is on. And by crush, I'm not kidding. Just try lifting the three-volume collection of Calvin and Hobbes comics. You'll throw out a disc.

 

Every year, as the glossy tributes to everything from Tiffany jewels to tree frogs arrive, I can't help wondering how big the market is for these books. Exactly how many readers are dying to snap up Venomous Snakes of the World - a book filled with color pictures of creatures you'd shudder to find in your backyard, let alone on your mahogany, hand-carved Louis XV table?

 

And, OK, I know this will get me flamed all over the Internet, but c'mon: Celine Dion: For Keeps? Are there really thousands of people out there who want a book filled with re-creations of Dion's "favorite mementos, stored in vellum envelopes"? "Everything from Céline and René's love notes and family photos to special letters and her wedding program can be examined and admired in detail," says the promo material.

 

Talk about a Canadian snoozefest.

 

This year, diva Dion finally spurred me to a fact-finding mission. I phoned Jessica Napp, publicist for Harry N. Abrams, venerable publisher of coffee-table books, and laid the impertinent bomb at her feet: Who's spending the big bucks on all these two-ton tomes?

 

Napp confirmed the obvious: Many are gift buyers - some who choose the option by default. "The golfer won't buy a book of pretty pictures for himself, he'll buy the instructional book. But his wife, she's already bought him every tie on the planet. What else is she gonna get?"

 

In that case, it's no surprise the golf titles are perennially best-sellers. "This year, we've already sold out of two: Golf's 100 Toughest Holes and Fifty Places to Play Golf Before You Die."

 

The company also is betting that the Himalayas are big this year, with the panoramic pictorials, Buddhist Himalayas and Himalaya.

 

They'll sell to "Richard Gere and the rest of the gang," she quips. All that celebrity exposure can only widen their market. Plus: "you have Angelina Jolie all over the Far East adopting kids, and that jumps it up a notch."

 

Jolie can explain a lot of strange occurrences; just ask Jennifer Aniston. But at $125 a pop, what explains the sale of Louis Vuitton: The Birth of Modern Luxury, a book that comes with a giant leather handle on the cover, as if to underscore its extravagant, 616-page heft?

 

"That would definitely be the bauble," says Napp. "These are for people who shop at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks. They have a designer wardrobe in the closet and this is their favorite designer . . . (it's for) someone who wears the designer, likes the designer, follows fashion in a serious way."

 

For the book to succeed, Napp adds, that doesn't have to be much more than a closetful of people. Big numbers aren't expected. "We know we're not James Patterson. We know where we stand on the book food chain."

 

The Louis Vuitton book has sold around 3,500 copies, she notes. A big performer like Fifty Places to Golf has tallied 34,500 sales. Compare those numbers with The Da Vinci Code, with more than 7 million books in print, and we aren't exactly talking the Holy Grail of publishing.

 

But with 30 to 40 titles each holiday season (and 200 in a year) the bottom line for Abrams is this: Even if a title appeals to the smallest niche, the numbers add up, as long as the price point is right and the marketing savvy. "You just have to find exactly who you're looking for," she says.

 

In other words, even tree frogs will find their own reader pool, given the right publishing house.

 

Napp acknowledges the intangibles of the business. Some coffee-table book buyers are status seekers. "There are those people out there who want to make a big impression with a $75 book, and it's easier than booking a trip on the Queen Mary."

 

And some just like the way books complete their House Beautiful room. You don't see books stacked perfectly in magazines for nothing. "There's something about them that makes the scene look finished."

 

Still others feel coffee-table books make a statement about who they are. Consider Napp's punk friend. She wears black eyeliner, chains and goes clubbing until 2 every morning - and wouldn't have been caught dead with a coffee-table book, until she heard Abrams was coming out with CBGB and OMFUG: Thirty Years from the Home of Underground Rock. "Then she called and said 'I've got to have it,' " Napp says.

 

All of which begs the most pressing question: Who's snapping up that eye-glazing tour of Celine Dion's emotional attic?

 

A quick cruise around Amazon.com brought the answer: women like Brenda O. Ms. O was practically hyperventilating in her online review of the book, she was so excited about the offering. "The book arrived this morning and all I could think was OMG!! The book is HUGE!!!" she writes. " . . . Then I unwrapped it to see the most stunning photo of Céline on the cover! But wait . . . the best is yet to come!!! . . . there are actual reproductions of some of Céline's most treasured mementos!! Photos, announcements, invitations, personal notes, etc.! My favorites being the family album with pics of René & René-Charles (BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL BOY!), Barbra Streisand/Céline photo, and a report card from grade school (LOL!!)!"

 

It just goes to prove that one person's overwrought ego trip is another's overwrought page-turner.

 

Ah well. After my callous dis of Dion, I have a feeling I'll be seeing Brenda and all those exclamation points again - when she takes my name in vain in Internet chat rooms.

 

In the meantime, I'm hunkering down with my own antidote to all that breathless sincerity. Nothing like glossy pictures of venomous snakes, I say, to spice up the holiday season.

That's really an unfair way to "review" the book I think his problem is that he doesn't understand that this book has been written for us fans.

 

We just shouldn't pay attention to this unfair review because for us this book is a great gift and it's not as "weird" as he thinks..
