idroveallnight Posted September 20, 2008 at 04:53 PM Posted September 20, 2008 at 04:53 PM I found this article reviewing the first show on LI. I don't think it's been posted here: Review: Celine Dion at Nassau ColiseumBY GLENN GAMBOA | glenn.gamboa@newsday.com September 14, 2008 Celine Dion performs the first of four area shows at Nassau Coliseum (JIN LEE / September 13, 2008) In case all the video screens, the 10-foot high rotating pedestal, the massive, multitiered stage with mechanized walkways, and the platforms that move like turrets in some sort of Vegas pop musical castle didn't make the point, Celine Dion is a bit over-the-top. She has 10 musicians, including a percussionist and a drummer, along with eight dancers and she's primarily known as a balladeer, OK? There's nothing wrong with that, except sometimes less really is more. Dion doesn't get that all the vocal curlicues and extraneous loopiness of her performances -- the forearm slapping, the air punching, the quick kicks and, because the show is in the round, her odd 90-degree turns -- detract from the music. Take the reworking of the already-bombastic 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' unveiled during Saturday's 110-minute show at Nassau Coliseum. The original highlighted her magnificent voice and her incredible control. The 'improved' version makes her backing singers annoyingly 'ooh' and 'ahhh' as she delivers the verses. Dion shines when she keeps things in check, as in the gorgeous duet 'The Prayer' with Andrea Bocelli, who performs his half on film, or the relatively understated 'Because You Loved Me.' Even 'Taking Chances,' the title track from her album and inspiration for the current tour, works by saving her booming voice for the song's walloping ending. Dion knows how to make drama work for her, because she uses it to great effect in the weepy 'All By Myself' and in the finale 'My Heart Will Go On.' But so often, she oversells -- both when she talks and sings -- and oversteps, thinking her voice can transform anything. Rock isn't good for her, especially not Queen's 'We Will Rock You.' Soul isn't her thing either, screeching her way through the last half of James Brown's 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World.' Taking chances on material is all well and good, but Dion needs to deliver the payoff. When you're reaching that far over-the-top, the fall can be really far. Celine Dion at Nassau Coliseum When: Saturday night. Dion plays Madison Square Garden Sept. 15 and 16 and Nassau Coliseum again on Sept. 18. BOTTOM LINE: A big-budget bonanza to match her big, big voice. Ugh. No good reviews yet for NY. I think the problem is that this show is really steered for a more youthful audience who doesn't mind getting on their feet and singing along. They are really taking chances with this tour, regardless of the songlist. When the audience is full of limp old people who probably never heard Fade Away or Shadow of Love before, then reviews like this will be the result. If the people writing the reviews see that the audiences are dead and not respondent, unless they are a fan of Celine, they will pretty much echo that sentiment in their reviews. If younger people knew the direction Celine is going in, I think they would really cling to her and give her new music a chance. But when you have such high ticket prices and promos for the tour only airing during Oprah and other shows aimed to older fans, then you can pretty much expect an audience of grandmothers, soccer moms and their husbands. One fan drops a CD and she picks it up for him ! Wow her heart is just one of a kind. So unique.Yea I saw that. She's just so unbelievably humble. 99.9% of stars would never dream of stooping themselves to the level of a "fan" and pick up something they dropped. She clearly has so much respect for the fans, even when she waives goodbye to the crowd at the end you could really feel her appreciation. That's the reason why fans keep falling in love with her over and over again. And believe me, that small act of kindness she did will last with that fan forever. Quote

Celinenvegas Posted September 22, 2008 at 01:51 AM Posted September 22, 2008 at 01:51 AM Hey everyone, I got to meet Celine after the Sept 18th show. I didn't go to the show, only to the hotel to wait for Celine to return. It was a small crowd, maybe 15 or so people. I was a little worried because someone posted that she'd leave for Atlantic City after the show & not return to NYC - not true. Vic met me there and we both got pics with Celine. She also signed my 25 Ans D'Amour book! At first they said no pics but then Celine whispered to the bodyguard and they got people organized quickly & over to Celine to take pics with her. There were some fans from France & 3 other girls that came right from the show. I don't remember who got pics with Celine, it all happened so fast. After a few took pics they said are we done, anyone else? So I pushed my way through and my friend took the pic. Then Vic asked me if I'd take his pic so I yelled to her bodyguard Nick "here's another". I think Vic said that Celine asked him who was taking the pic & she called him "sir" - haha. Is that right Vic? Celine didn't speak much, I think she may have said thank you to me but it's a blur! haha After she took the pics they said thank you and that's it, but then she started signing some autographs and I stuck my book out and she signed it! It was such an incredible experience, I'm so glad I went and also glad Vic decided to go too. I was so emotional right after, it was too much, I never expected the picture with her. Quote ~J O E Y~
