If there’s one way to experience the real Céline, the very one that Jean-Jacques described in his songs so poignantly and fittingly, it’s surely through seeing her in concert or better: to see her during the French part of the tour. After all these years performing in Las Vegas she didn’t seems lost, she never lost her “way neige” that ever since she mentioned it in 1998 on SISDA seemed her guiding light throughout the years.

 

The average age of the audience was about 60. It is always remarkable to see how many people Céline is attracting and how diverse the fans are. Even though chances have been taken, there are still people that haven’t been scared away by her new sound… people that still somehow know why to go exactly to a Céline concert and what for. And I can certainly say that all those countless number of lesbians, gays, olds and youngs in Antwerpen got what they came for.

 

Since the beginning Céline’s soft rock side has been constantly underplayed and even though she tried to diversify her sound to reach a broader audience she always subconsciously chose something that was very idiosyncratic to her sound. Somehow you can only see that clearly by attending one of her concerts. And the concerts are not about the blinking lights, not about the Saturday Night Fever stage, not about the LCD screens and not even the annoying playback. They’re about Céline.

 

Not even once during the amazing variety of songs presented in Antwerpen was my focus taken away from this certain fragile figure that puts her very best into every note of a given song. Not even once, not even the lights that sometimes seemed so strong and amalgam have managed to distract my view and the magnetic power that Céline incorporates as a singer on stage. She doesn’t need any fireworks to exist on stage. She just needs to sing live.

 

The live moments were one of a kind. She emanated a special deal of energy that let you understand exactly why she is considered one of the best performers out there. The details in her voice are very much pronounced. The very (live) beginning of The Power Of Love got me at already seduced. She enunciated every word in a heartrending manner, putting accent on words that usually stand empty without her voice fanning lightly but decidedly around them.

 

The current timbre of her voice unites the willingness of being precise and the recently new gained wish to show that there’s more than just a magnificent voice behind her name. The favorite moment of the evening was for me “Ziggy” where she sang so whisperingly enchanting albeit so clear and powerful at the same time. Power in her voice was out of question, impeccable especially on “On Ne Change Pas” – the power of the emotion. Perhaps it was cuzz she sang these songs live for the first time or perhaps it was that her voice now is more than ever ready to understand their lyrics?

 

“S’Il n’en restait qu’une” and “Je Sais Pas” are two long lost sisters that got deservedly reunited on this night in Antwerpen. Both have never sounded better when she wrapped her voice with melancholy and sadness around every word, adding some crying adlibs to Je Said Pas, it became clear, so clear that they both belong together. The piercing tone of her voice hit every soul gathered in the place and I couldn’t believe she still had this certain D’eux-raspiness amidst the on-point-vocals in her cords. She ain’t have forgotten nuttin’. Give her the right material and she will reinvent it live.

 

“Alone” has been always my favorite and live it came to life like no other English song. And why is that…why is that, many will ask? Why “Alone” out of all songs have been sung so masterfully? Why even “All By Myself” seemed lackluster and uninspired against “Alone”? The answer is easier than we think. All these songs – S’il n’en restain qu’une, Alone, Je sais pas and All By Myself – speak of some particular kind of pain. An emotion you hardly get introduced to in a proper way listening to studio versions of Céline’s songs. “Alone” was heartfelt, soulful and desperate exposing nice darkish layer of Céline’s vocals.

 

As the last encore she chose Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore, another song of desperation, hope and decisiveness. Did her voice soar? It didn’t have to even, I didn’t even notice the voice because it was the best emotional delivery of this song live I’ve heard to date. The evening with Céline was about to end and after a caring almost trembling “Je vous aime” Céline lunched at once into the hevy initial beats of her greatest French hit. She indeed loves us and she proved that by slowly walking in her dark gown around the stage, magically gazing at each corner of the venue as if she wanted to dedicate special parts of the song to every one of the people in the audience.

 

That was exactly, indubitably and truly what they came for.

I totally agree with you! I was at her concert yesterday and it was amazing. I went tot the concert with my sister. She is absolutely no Celine fan but she was totally impressed by the concert. She didn't expect that herself. That was very cool!!!

Celine's shows are not about her costumes or the lights or the special effects. They're about her voice. And her own personal beauty. She is impossibly captivating. And once she is on stage, no matter how many fancy things you put up there, it is impossible to take your eyes off her.

 

Live on stage is the only way to appreciate her beauty and her voice. I too was with a friend and she admitted at the end that she had never seen anything like it before; that Celine was just spectacular.

I think you're right VinnyT...

As far as I know the Antwerp concert was advertised as Taking Chances Tour. The Paris concerts are not advertised like this, although Arras is... That leads me to believe that the Bercy shows will be a different format ( the song list will almost certainly be 80% French).

Of course, I cannot be certain, and if the stage and dances remain the same then the show itself might not change much.

 

But I think in France, she will be obliged to do more French songs... and she will probably want to as it will provide her with a change during this long and gruelling schedule!

I was lucky enough to go to the first two french shows since 1999 It was truely truely amazing! You could just see the pure joy of performing live again in french! And I was so so happy that she sang TLDH and ONCP! And it's really bad those two were taken out the other night TLDH had a fantastic ending!! With Céline all over the place! But the public didn't responded that well to it, so it wasn't so strange that it was taken out, I think they need to make the guitars heavier, not acoustic like it was... cos this song rocks live! I never thought I would see the day, she would sing it live! LOL Also ESNRQ was AMAZING!! it's a true gem!!

 

I think these nights are just a preview for Paris. Like the other said, she's bound to sing more french songs there, also there are 2 french songs in the tourbook, that she didn't sing yet, so who knows!

 

I really really love this tour! It has such a great vibe! I like it more then the vibe in Vegas, but somehow there you really had the idea that you saw céline, cos in Vegas you were so close... I can't wait till the 24th!!

I posted the photos and now the relation!

I was really lucky because i had bought only a ticket for 14th concert but when i arrived to Antwerp I went to Sportpaleis and asked is there are any tickets and I bought one!

Well the concert was amazing!!!!!

My favourite is Tout l'or des hommes Alone and PQTME

Tout l'or des hommes it's amazing, it has such modern melody as IA

Alone is just speechless, her voice, the violin

TPOL on that night was amazing - i don't want to talk about playback any more but the part when she IS singing was really different nice and fresh... she could easily sing the whole one

also the french songs like ONCP Destin ESNRQ were really really amazing! though it's a pity there was only one song from D'elles

TC and IA were also nice, I like the remix though still i miss ANDHC

I think that the full version of Ziggy is no needed for me, also I would cut LCMM

MHWGO with candles and this dress was really breathtaking

I was firstly in Amsterdam then in Antwerp and I had no idea what the show would like so every song was like a surprise....

and in the end I though she missed PQTME totally ... what is this?! and the biggest surprise came last! after MHWGO she sang PQTME It was really a gem!

The whole audience was standing and singing with her! it was the moment i'll remember for sure

Actually the audience was really great through the whole concert but at the end it came how they really love Celine!
