So is it true that Canadian French is really different from France French? A few people have said that its difficult for Parisian French speakers to understand Canadian French because its so different. I that`s true, then I`m learning the wrong one!

their are a few words that are different I believe - but mostly it's just the accent that is different, quite different in fact and sometimes it is really hard to understand, Céline has a Québécois accent for example. IMO it's not as nice as a normal French accent.

lol but it makes it easier to recognize her voice yeh i agree Celine's Quebecois accent doesnt sound as nice as the normal French one. after watching Tetes A Claques, everytime i watch Celine speak in French she reminds me of those heads Edited June 3, 2007 at 07:43 AM by lamourpourCeline

I don't know anywhere you can find it, sorry, but I don know it's sometimes very different... I remember her saying something in her speech before singing S'il suffisait d'aimer (Millenium concert I guess) that took me a long time to figure out what she was saying...

 

I remember an interview I watched where JJG said something about the differences in Céline's accent.. I think it was in the making of of 1f4t...

We have different accents, but also different words.

There are a loooot of French words that Quebecers wouldn't use, and the contrary is also true.

For example, a slang word which means "kids" here, means an intimate part of men there !

 

Here is a little funny link, on which you have different scenes with Batman, and you can make him speak with a French or Quebecer accent : (they talk really fast though, it's hard to get it )

If you can fit the classes and some study time into your schedule, you should sign up! Does the local high school offer adult continuing education? Mine does, and it offers a couple of French classes. They're a lot cheaper than the community college, but you don't get college credit for them.

 

Regarding which song to start with - how about any of the 3 that lamourpourceline mentioned - D'amitie, C'est Pour Vivre, or Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore?

My local high school doesn't offer anything like that...so I'd have to go to a community college for it. One day...one day...

I've been listening to Pimsleur's Instant Conversation French I during my breaks at work and in the car.

 

My only issue with Pimsleur is that it doesn't have a manual to accompany it so I don't know how to spell or write the words!

 

I had an amusing time trying to tell my mom how to say "Est-ce que tu voudrais manger quel'que choses?"

 

Celine's faxes in For Keeps are good practice for translation too because the English translations are not literal word for word.

 

For example:

"Je ne pense qu'a mon retour dans tes bras." is "I think only on my return to your arms."

 

I can't figure out why she has "ne" in there and no "pas."

 

Anyone know why?

I'm pretty sure the files will need to be pieced together. I read earlier in the thread that everything had to be downloaded before you could do anything. In other words all the parts had to be downloaded because it was split into pieces.

 

I'm sure somebody here knows the answer.

i really wanna learnt frencg almost fluently. i was good at it in school, thanks to céline and my french teacher ms halford. it was when d'eux , came out so that helped alot, my teacher borrowed my tape casette to photocopy the lyrics, then we use to translate them in class!

i also took french at a level, but found it too hard, all the new verbs and tenses just messed me up.

i was better at writing french, i remember my gcse french exam i was out way before everybody else!! its my listening that is slightly poor, i need to get out of the habit of hearing the french and translating it into english in my head. at the moment im listening to the d'elles album following along with the lyrics. i know il get there one day!

 

ive always said that when i meet céline, i'll speak to her in french, and my friend renata at work is encouraging me, so hopefully i can do it! but then céline speaks such fast french!
