Céline and René are bound to record something commercial in English just for the sake of sales. Remember how Céline used to ironically mention that "they wanted me to do something new, I recorded Rain, Tax". It's not that she had a choice... of course she had a choice but then Sony would never agree to release it and surely René as a buisnessman as he is assured them 100% Dion complience. Goldman said about ANDHC that it had a little of everything but no coherency. He just wouldn't be artistically CAPABLE to fulfill Sony's wishes. Quote http://i.imgur.com/dmreJ.jpg

firebird Posted September 30, 2006 at 11:32 AM Posted September 30, 2006 at 11:32 AM Wasn't it Eddy Marnay who said something similar about her English music? I only remember that Goldman wasn't very happy about the English adaptions on Falling Into You (even though I personally think I Don't Know is one of her best English songs).I think it's good he only works on her French music, that makes it different. It's good to have a little variety, and on 1 Fille & 4 Types he was more a coordinator/producer then a songwriter and for that she doesn't need him for her English albums. It would be different if he wrote the songs for the album as well. Quote

It's on one hand very natural for her English releases to be commercial cuzz commercial means in the buisness world something with a broad appeal and if you have a broad appeal you simply sell. But on the other hand - and that is what is so contradictory about Céline - you should really find a balance between what you want and what you will get for it. In my opinion she did find a marvelous balance between commercialism and artistry with no other than Jean-Jacques Goldman. I don't understand why you say he's being a hypocrite by stating the obvious about her English releases, especially considering Céline thinks almost in the same way about it regarding the emotional/artistic level. It's JJG who studied her and delivered a personal albvum about a Quebecoise wanting to make her way in France. He described it all perfectly in the songs. The honesty sold the album and of course Céline's devotion to the album - in 1995 it was all about D'eux, not about TCOML. He meant that D'eux had coherence, credibility, skillful singing united. It sold, of course but that doesn't make him a hypocrite - it was their tour de force, it was d'eux not de 14 producers, 10 songwriters and 60 waiters and hairdressers. In English she needs more variety than ever. Why not in French as well? JJG paved the way, he is still there and lets her do her thing, something new each time. Oh and I BET he will write that one song for the French CD and they will include it as hidden track. 80% bet. Quote http://i.imgur.com/dmreJ.jpg
thevoice Posted September 30, 2006 at 11:50 AM Posted September 30, 2006 at 11:50 AM again seb - i agree that their work together ia amzaing but it's commercial too and who said commercial=trash??yeahh , in her recent work commercial truely=trash but take FIY or LTAL or TAST - i know u hate those albums but most of the fans miss those times and cant wait for celine to record such songs again , those albums r the most commercial ones she ever did yet those r the most beautiful and unforgettable ones too Quote
Céline's Blues Posted September 30, 2006 at 12:02 PM Posted September 30, 2006 at 12:02 PM Nobody says that commercial = trash and that I hate the English albums! It's about her artistic credibility and these long and powerful notes have nothing to do with it. Of course there is this special Céline Dion en francais and this special Celine Dion in English. Two different approches, maybe not that different after all but still distinguishable. I couldn't care less if she hit these notes on her French releases as long as she would retain the lyrics and that depth. I know it all comes down to her voice cuzz truly - I bet many would see more things in her English songs if she didn't scream in them. That is especially evident on "Us" - I didn't understan a word she was screaming all the way through the song till I read the lyrics myself. Quote http://i.imgur.com/dmreJ.jpg

Célinefull Posted October 2, 2006 at 12:50 AM Posted October 2, 2006 at 12:50 AM ...and then she vomited. The fact of the matter is, all of Céline's albums are to a certain extent commercial, but her English albums are formulaic. You can almost listen to an album and say; they were trying to do this with that song, and appeal to this audience with that one. Her French albums, however, have a broad appeal because they are well made and, as it says in the ONCP book; French people like soft songs with beautiful lyrics, Americans like screaming . It may be more that French music just generally has the air of being more authentic than English music. Quote http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/7108/ziegfieldgirlbanner.jpg

firebird Posted October 2, 2006 at 11:36 AM Posted October 2, 2006 at 11:36 AM (edited) Yes, sometimes it's a bit hard to understand what Celine sings, but in my opinion it has more to do how she articulates the words and less with her screaming. French people like soft songs with beautiful lyricsThat's just a stereotype. French people like the same as any other people. Take a look at the actual single charts [link] and tell me how many of the songs in the top ten are "soft songs with beautiful lyrics" edit : Do you remember that Corey Hart supposedly wrote two songs for Garou's English album? As far as I know, Garou has never released them. Wouldn't it be great if Celine released them on her album. I really like the songs he wrote for Céline, Prayer and Where Is The Love (which is the best song on LTAL in my opinion). They have this special atmosphere. He should really work with her again.
