And then there's also running and biking (or indoor cycling/spinning) and if you do those a lot (and I mean a LOT), it definitely builds up your muscles too, so weight lifting is not the only option. You could do different kinds of trainings, like some days run longer distances, some days shorter but faster, some days go find a hill and run it several times up and down etc.

I disagree. If you want big legs, or big anything for that matter, weight lifting is the only option. Of course, you can build up muscles without it, but that would be a different kind of muscle definition. Runners and cyclists do have muscular legs but they're very different from those of a bodybuilder. You just have to know what it is you actually want. I, for one, have big and thick legs, so I don't use a lot of weight. I need definition, not size. Of course, that's where nutrition comes in...

Btw, I wanted to put in my two cents to the whole abs discussion. The phrase "abs are made in the kitchen" falls into the same size/definition category. For instance your chest, arms e.t.c. do get a lot bigger when you stress them enough and you notice the positive change in the body even if you don't change your nutrition. That's not the case with abs, however. Abs can't get a lot bigger, that's why if you don't change the way you eat, all those crunches will do practically nothing for you.

CelineAndRene is absolutely right!

Get on the edge of a step, and lower and raise your heel, like this:

http://www.jumpusa.com/calfblock.gif

Do 3 sets of 10.

There's no way around it, running always builds muscle, even in your abdomen!

Don't overwork your calves, this will only slow the process of building muscles! I recommend doing these exercises no more than 3 times a week.

Don't be unrealistic though, you won't get results extremely fast, and they won't look like Celine's legs in less than a month! But keep working at it, and you will achieve it :thumbsup2:

Thanks Volleyceline!! I will defo try that! and its an exercise that wouldnt take up alot of time either! With work recently i get hardly anytime to exercise and i used to alot before

Seeing Celines legs there is motivating me!!! :w00t:

If you sit at a computer desk all day, u can still exercise your legs!! :)

Sit with your toes pointed out, and flex your calves, then relax. Then flex, do this over and over for 3 sets of 10! I do this occasionally at school during class :shy:

All this exercise helps of course, but then there's also the gene factor, or your physics. I mean, not everyone can have legs like Céline's even if they did nothing but work out! :D Take me for example, in general I'm in a pretty good condition and I train a lot (BodyStep classes, running, spinning + gym) but I'm quite short (1.63 m) and I have reeaaally short legs and it's in my genes that they are also very "thick" (cause my mum also has thick legs, even though she on the other hand is tall), so I can never have those long and slim legs, no matter what I do (well unless I go to a surgery or something..). So, I just have to live with what I have. :D But, even though it would be nice to have those superb legs, the most important thing is however to have working legs, legs that I can walk and run with, after all that's their most important job! ;)

But of course, keep working out, cause that's always good and of course modifies the shape of your legs to some degree (and if you're lucky, even to those amazing Céline legs)! :thumbsup2:

I think the best way to have bigger legs is to go to the gym and use ENOUGH weight in exercising them. I mean, legs are extremely strong, so you should use pretty heavy weights with them too, if you want to see results. And then there's also running and biking (or indoor cycling/spinning) and if you do those a lot (and I mean a LOT), it definitely builds up your muscles too, so weight lifting is not the only option. You could do different kinds of trainings, like some days run longer distances, some days shorter but faster, some days go find a hill and run it several times up and down etc., what ever you come up with. The point is to have some variety in the exercises, and to not always do the same exercises the same way. I don't know if this is any help, but just wanted to give my opinion about it! :) Good luck!

that was what i was thinking. the genes. I guess my legs were made to run fast and for climbing or clinging on trees.

Heh, I prefer running too, cause every time I'm walking, I feel like "I wanna go faster, I want to run!!" I do like walking with a friend though, but when I'm by myself I want to run. Running is just sooo much fun! ^_^

Talking about running, I experienced a real "runner's high" today!! I went for a 7 km run, and I thought my feet would be tired from yesterday's bodystep class and that it wouldn't become the best run for that, but actually it ended up an excellent one! After I had ran about half an hour, and had just come down a hill, I had this aaawesome feeling.. Like my feet just went on by themselves, breathing was working like perfectly, the best song was shouting loud on my ear, there was no wind etc. and I had this feeling of extreme joy and I was just smiling all the way!! :D I LOVE when that happens!!! And I LOVE running! :throb: :)

Is anybody taking any supplements? I'm thinking of starting drinking protein shakes to speed up muscle gain. Has anybody had any experience with them?

Went to the gymnaisium yesterday for volleyball. I want to go to the weight room but haven't found the time the last 2 days

I'm taking vitamins but they're kiddie ones :P my friend takes protein shakes and he is HUGE like built! So I assume they help you, but you shouldn't be entirely dependent on it.

There's nothing potentially dangerous in them. They're not steroids.

volleyceline, your friend probably lifts very heavy weights, because shakes are just a supplement and cannot produce any results alone.

The reason why I'm asking is because protein powder is pretty expensive and at the same time there's contradiction as to whether it helps or not. It would be a pity if all I had to do is eat more protein-rich foods.

Yeah I know ^^ haha he's huge. And quite good looking  haha I sit next to him in 2 classes. I asked him what he would do if he woke up with flabby arms, he said he'd kill himself :giggle:

Did some crunches last night, didn't get to go to the weight room or gym yesterday

My coach was talking to my parents, about me being on varsity next year :yahoo: so excited!

Yeah, well tomorrow I was supposed to do legs, but I think I'll take your advice and rest. I've been keeping it elevated for the last several hours.

That was like 8 months ago. I fell down while hiking and tore ankle ligaments. But I usually say I broke it, people have fewer questions when I say that for some reason.

:blushing1: I do that at times to, make a story that I have to repeat a million times easier to say, and to understand!!

That sounds painful  a month or two ago, the ligaments in my ankle became inflamed and I had to sit out a week from practice  I can't imagine how much yours hurt.

So you go to a local gym? Or do you exercise at home? ^_^

At home. I spent a lot of money on my weights, I ain't gonna spend more on a gym! :)

It didn't hurt that bad at first, I guess I was in shock - my ankle had swollen to enormous sizes in a matter of minutes, that was quite a sight! But a little later even the slightest movement caused pain. That's why I tell everybody if you have a choice - break it. :-D Bones are rigid and don't cause a lot of trouble (unless it's really serious), muscles and ligaments are flexible and react to the smallest movement. Look at me, it's been almost a year and it still hurts. :glare: Take good care of yourself, people!

I just did some birthday situps!!!

You'll never see the courage i know. It's colours richness won't appear within your view. I'll never glow the way that you glow. Your presence dominates the judgements made on you.

But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights. The shades and shadow undulate in my perception. My feelings swell and strech, I see from greater heights. I understand what I am still too proud to mention to you.

You'll say you understand. But you don't understand. You'll say you'd never give up seeing eye to eye. But never is a promise and you can't afford to lie.

You'll never touch the things that I hold. The skin of my emotions lies beneath my own. You'll never feel the heat of this soul. My fever burns me deeper than I've ever shown.

But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights. The shades and shadows undulate in my perception. My feelings swell and strech, I see from greater heights. I realize what i am now too smart to mention to you.

You'll say you understand. You'll never understand. I'll say I'll never wake up knowing how or why. I don't know what to believe in. You don't know who I am. You'll say I need appeasing when i start to cry. But never is a promise and I'll never need a lie.
