There is a part where I'll have to listen and prove I understood, and another one where I'll have to write a little text...So it's not easy to train on that, but I'm especially working on grammar things... Especially in French, words get pronounced differently depending on where the person comes from, and even the liason changes depending on the accent. LaFeeRailleuse Posted April 6, 2006 at 03:10 PM Posted April 6, 2006 at 03:10 PM (edited) Hi everyone! I need your help for a test. It deals with the visit of Queen Elizabeth in Australia! Daily MailMirror[Here are 2 of the 3 articles we'll have to work on] I think those two newspapers are British... right? Can anyone tell me if they're more left-wing or right-wing?What are the Commonwealth Games? Can someone explain me in other words the part I put in red and bold, please? She was greeted on the tarmac at Defence Establishment Fairbairn a bubbling debate bemused tourists The issue of whether to dump the monarchy has been simmering since a referendum in 1999 narrowly rejected a republic. "I think bubbling under the surface there is still a lot of interest (in the republican debate)."==> what does he mean? Around 50 construction workers protested near the Opera House against labour market reforms by Prime Minister John Howard's government==> what are those reforms Here are the little points which trouble me. I hope someone will be able to help me.Thanks in advance! Edited April 6, 2006 at 03:10 PM by nelemy Quote
Célinefull Posted April 7, 2006 at 08:12 AM Posted April 7, 2006 at 08:12 AM The commonwealth games are hosted by a city in the British Empire. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Commonwealth_Games Both The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror are both considered to be right-wing newspapers, especially the Daily Mail. Yes, they are British, too. The Tarmac (macadam?) is a black road base, in this instance, it refers to the landing strip at the airport, because it is made out of tarmac.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarmac Bubbling (bouillonnement) refers to the fact that the debate between Royalists and Republicans is lively, il y a beaucoup de gens qui ont des avis forts, qui est comme l'eau avec beaucoup de bulles dans lui, il se bouge beaucoup, très animé et en activité. Compris? Bemused (stupéfié) means that the people are confused and dumbfounded, i.e. Confus, incertain To Dump (décharger) in this case means getting rid of something, getting rid of the Monarchy, but dump usually means to throw something away, like garbage. Simmering is a cooking word, like when something boils, and then you turn it down, so it is just beneath/below the boil, in this scenario, it has been used to imply that the argument was very lively (boiling) but now has calmed down, (simmering) but could come back to the boil at any moment. "I think bubbling under the surface there is still a lot of interest (in the republican debate)."==> what does he mean? Again, bubbling means that the argument is still active and alive. "Bubbles under the surface" means that the argument is not in the open, or on the surface of the water, meaning that it is still a big issue that many people have strong feelings about, but the arguement has died down recently, so it is not as big a public debate as before, but it could be again. Around 50 construction workers protested near the Opera House against labour market reforms by Prime Minister John Howard's government==> what are those reforms The Australian government wants to take the right of workers to be able to challenge their boss if s/he fires them. By taking away the unfair dismissal tribunal, it means that employers could fire someone for a bad reason, and that person can do nothing about it, it also means that employers can threaten workers with being fired if they don't do something that the employer tells them to do, without any warnings. also, the term is "Labour market reforms" not just "Market reforms" a 'Market' in this case, refers to the "Job Market" and it is a term that refers to peoples jobs and employment/unemployment etc. The government wants to make it harder for constructions workers to strick and wants to take away their unions and job security. A reform, is when the government changes something, a peice of legislation or policy. I hope we can chat later on tonight, I can help you more then if you need, feel free to ask me anything you want..as the only Australian person here, I think I am the only one that can help you!
