The French Language

Hey everybody!!! I know many of you can speak French, and I have wanted to learn that language since I was about ummm...like 14. I took 2 weeks of it in high school, but moved, so didn't ever pick it back up! Do any of you know of a good program or way or even website that teaches it and that would be easy enough to learn quickly? I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to eventually be fluent in it! Well, first of all, I'd love to be able to listen to ALL of Celine's french songs, and actually understand what she is saying in them, 2nd of all, I would want to be able to speak it fluently for when I go to France in the future! I've heard rumors that French people over there get annoyed with Americans who cannot speak it...which is something I wouldn't want to get involved with! Is that really true? Is it possible that any of YOU would be willing to help me out a little bit? You know, some simple words...? I can listen to a word or sentence and think it sounds good, and then when I go to try and SAY it...it is SOOOO hard!! Do you think I'll master it? I mean, it is HIGH up on my list for things I want to accomplish before I die!! So, guys, please let me know...I would adore you forever and ever!!! Edited April 13, 2007 at 06:04 AM by KimboCosmo

I can speak a little french.. when I was in Paris I realized I knew more than I thought I did... not good at writing though

I used to want to learn French badly. But never did it due to lack of time and laziness. Now, I don't want to learn it very much.

hey Kimbo. there's this website called frenchassistant.com. its free and easy to use i've been wanting to learn French for ages too but because my mum doesnt allow me, so i cant first thing i do in college is take up French!

Yessss Lets do that!!! I am soooo wanting to learn it! And I do know alot of easy words like bonjour and merci...it's when you start putting sentences together that it get CONFUSING!! Sometimes they roll their tongue when they pronounce certain words, and it is so crisp and short each word....I get sooo frustrated when I try to copy what I just heard in French...lol

In Canada, it's a law that if kids are in school, they must learn French. I think you start taking FSL (French as a Second Language) in the Grade 4 and you have the option to drop out and not take in anymore in Grade 10. So you have to take it for Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade, 8 and Grade 9. That's why I know French. I took it even in Grades 10 and above. I still do. Though, of course, I'm not the greatest French essay writter.

Had it for 5 years, then hadn't it for 3 years, and since two weeks i have it again!! Of course my teacher started at the basics again, but a bit further, which is good, but I thought I forgot alot, but remembered it all, she was like damn you're good, esp your pronounciation lol

I had french classes on grande 7, grade 8 and grade 9. Those were mostly useless. They repeated the same subjects every years. All my friends can't remember anything more than bonjour. I learned a lot by myself, by forcing myself to watch french television (in hopes of seeing Celine), buying french magazines and trying hard to translate Celine's interviews and songs. I think I can pretty much carry a conversation in french. I think my french is getting better by the day. I'm very proud of it.

I have a tip: Move to Europe, because what I have learned during my exchange with the US is, that you do not learn a language in your highschools. It was their 5th year of French and they knew as much as did in the first 6 weeks....

I took it four years in high school, it was great.

 

For learning it, I would suggest the Living Language French kit..it has a book and audio.

I also have the Livivng Language course. It is really good. Not too expensive.

I also have the BBC course. I loved the books. You can get DVD`s to go with the course too.

There's a good software for those who are begginers but I really forgot the name.. I guess it's "before you learn" or something like that... It doesn't teach how to form sentences and all, but it has the basic sentences we need to start a conversation, how to order things on a restaurant and etc...

I stopped using it when I started taking a French course, but it helped me a lot...

I'm in the intermediate level of course right now and I guess i'm doing pretty well. languages have always been a hobby for me as well, but of course Céline had her part in my willing of speaking French!

It just seems so hard...will I ever get it? I want to so bad, but just when I think I'm getting the hang of it, I can't remember something, and then I feel like I just need to start all over!!

I sometimes have my times too, when I think I'll never learn it and etc... But it's normal.. everybody who's learning a new language feels like that once in a while
