It doesn’t have to be Olympics related at all. It can simply be celebrating the culture of the country or city you’re in. Pavarotti did Nessum Dorma in Turin, KD Lang did Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah in Vancouver, Paul McCartney did Hey Jude in London, Gladys Knight did Georgia on my Mind in Atlanta.

I can easily see her doing SSDA or an Edith Piaf song (or medley thereof), since those are so widely known and quintessentially Parisian. Or, like mentioned yesterday, the Olympic Hymn, though think that’s more of a stretch.

In English? Not gonna happen. Whole point is she’s one of the world’s most prominent French speakers. Besides, Imagine was done in London and wouldn’t make any sense in Paris. But SSDA is the French Imagine, and it definitely would.

Yes, I thought Hymne a l’Amour is likely, or Sous le Ciel de Paris. Or even La Vie en Rose or Je Ne Regrette Rien, since those are so iconic. There’s definitely got to be some Edith Piaf in the ceremony.

Paris 2024 Olympics: Céline Dion star of the opening ceremony?

Since late April, rumors have been swirling that Céline Dion could set the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games alight. After a long absence due to neurological illness, the Quebec singer could make a triumphant return on July 26.


According to Ouest France's research, Le Canard enchaîné has just revealed an internal document from the Olympic Games organizing committee, informing that the French state will pay 2.7 million euros for two "top artists" to perform at the opening ceremony. According to the weekly, the decision, taken by Emmanuel Macron, would designate Céline Dion and potentially Aya Nakamura as the headliners.

Yesssss you are right, the "Incredible" song she sang with Ne-Yo COULD BE A REALLY GREAT OLYMPIC THEME SONG!! Even if it was released over 10 years ago, it still could be used right??

I do remember reading a story on social media yearssss was ago that Celine & Rene tried to request "Incredible" to be in the Olympics during the year it was out, but unfortunately something happened & the Olympics did not use it. I am wondering about that story & hopefully its true as the lyrics to that song makes it sooo inspirational, in my opinion anyway & I do remember that Celine thought so too after she recorded it lol!!

Probably depends on just how big the controversy gets!  I do like the idea of her donating her fee to SPS research as a way of partially deflating that narrative/controversy, although quite honestly, I doubt she'd do it (unless the controversy over her exorbitant fee - if true - really does take on a life of its own).

Also, remember that the opening ceremony is not in a stadium. It's being held along La Seine and various Paris landmarks, so something celebrating the city would be very fitting.

I wasn't suggesting it had to be specifically Olympic-themed at all - something appropriate to the host city would be perfectly understandable.  I'd just rather it be a new song for the occasion - could be a Courage reject for all I care if there's a track that's appropriate to the occasion/location - to anyone watching, it would be a new thematically appropriate song premiered at the Olympics like The Power Of The Dream.  I could also totally understand covering a well known, classic chanson à la Piaf.  I just would rather not have her trot out a catalogue song of her own - even something like SSDA.  Make it something new, or something classic tribute.

It will be huge if she managed to participate.
Dont expect a LIVE performance. These events are not made for live performances. In these huge arenas it needs a special sound design, and they will not do it for just one song.
Thats why in Atlanta and in Super Bowl she didnt sing live.

For these reasons, the famous national anthem by Whitney was not live. the sound designer of that evening confirmed that.

Could it have been that Céline was due to attend the Met Gala in early May but in late April when these rumours came out about this appearance that in the contract she was told that this would be her first global appearance/performance?

Not everyone watches the Grammys or Met Gala… and not everyone watches the Olympics… but a huge global audience watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics every 4 years….

Re. the Met Gala, I think she may not have wanted to subject herself to several hours of strangers asking how she's doing. Let the doc do the talking. The Met Gala is a party, after all, and full of celebs with giant egos. Some might be people she knows and is close to, but most would have been strangers, and we know she never hung out with the "celeb crowd" so it probably isn't really her scene, and would have been draining. It would have been her fist public outing among people - the Grammys don't really count in the same sense because she didn't have to interact with several hundred people for hours on end and update each of them on how she's doing.

Plus Conde Nast workers were about to go on strike, and all Met Gala attendees would have had to cross picket lines. They barely avoided it, coming to agreement mere hours before the event.

Anyone familiar with this journalist and how reliable he is? I’ve watched the entire interview and he keeps saying how they’re trying to do something similar to a Super Bowl halftime show, with a ~10min concert of hits, closed out by an original song written for the occasion.

This feels like… a lot to be hoping for.

From what I understand they’re aiming for a mini-set during the ceremony, like a halftime show. Maybe after the parade of athletes?

Seems to me like this guy is a lot of hope and conjecture, and this would be a lot to expect people to tune in for. I mean, we’d love it, but would the average viewer around the world care that much / stick around? These ceremonies are already so long!

Perhaps it’s just the media biting on the story of Celine wanting to “do a concert film of her hits”, and what she said to vogue about “seeing the Eiffel Tower again”… sounds like they are tying those stories along with the Olympic speculation all into one big story.

Yeah that’s what it sounds like to me, too.
And it’s downright comical people are reading into Celine’s passing comment about seeing the Eiffel Tower in that Vogue interview. I mean… it’s most likely just random  stuff she says and besides, she’s got one right there in Vegas! 😁

We’re going to build this up into some big thing - with help from willing media like that interview above to fan the flame - and then we’re going to be left with deep disappointment and egg on our faces when she doesn’t show! 🤭🤡

Yeah they ran away with that Eiffel Tower comment by Celine… and true fan knows Celine was probably just trying to sound poetic and she was speaking to a journalist who WAS in France when she was answering the question. I instantly took it as “seeing the Eiffel Tower again” to her was a fancy way of just saying that her ultimate goal is to travel and perform again in France and around the world as whole, if not in a world tour capacity in just a few shows here and there type of thing.

It reminds me the same way the media took Claudette saying Celine has “lost all control of her muscles" literal, when in fact it was just a bad google translate job.

I’m hopeful that Celine will be the Olympics but I’m not “expecting” it… the media had her dead, had her at the met gala, had her retiring all in the last few months.
