"I Am: Celine Dion" documentary - Official TopicRelease date: June 25th, 2024

why there is no date announced? i think they want to give media some time to rekindle interest in celine's life and build up enough interest to maximize the audience who will want to see the documentary (apart from fans who will watch it anyway)
i think it might be released on february 14 or celine's birthday.... or any date with 5 in it.
when was this documentary ordered? did she already have sps when they ordered this project from the filmmaker? or was it supposed to be a regular documentary and then they had to include some segments about the illness because that happened later?....
i remember there was information about two films are coming about celine - aline and another official documentary (was that around 2017?) does that mean she had sps since 2017 or earlier...?
someone mentioned about how sps images are horrific - i am sure we will not see any horrible graphic videos there (there is no need for
that and that would be too personal to show to the world).
I also hope / wish that after this docu her social media will be rebooted and we will have a more personal day to day blog posts that show her life and struggles (and victories) with the sps and not the usual archival photos and tributes to other artists.
definitely looking forward to the whole documentary and hopefully we will see that celine is doing well and has a nice life despite of this terrible thing that happened to her that she doesn't deserve (not that anyone deserves this illness, but of all people celine should have had the most amazing life for everything she is and has given to us).

The question I wonder is how early do do they announce it compared to the release date…

Are we talking about a few weeks to a couple of months OR 6 months to a year away from when it will stream? What’s typical usually?

It’s actually common practice for film studios to formally announce a project with a press release, without an immediate release date or having the actors or subjects doing any kind of promo for it. Promo is usually saved for closer to the release date so that it’s fresh on people’s minds as the release date gets closer.

I have heard several times that it can take up to seven years to diagnose SPS. So it is very possible that she has had it much longer than SHE even knew. I see some signs when I watch clips from 2017 and later.

I work in this line of business so I am more than aware of how things work, like I previously mentioned… but it’s the team she surrounds herself with since Aldo left is my concern, they need to evolve, get additional experienced younger staff, or do one.
This is Céline Dion we are talking about here not Dionne Warwick!

Though I do find it interesting that CTV aired the English version of Céline’s Silence just this past weekend, and made a fairly big deal of it. Wonder if the media had this doc press release a while back but it was embargoed until Tuesday.
If we’ve learned anything in these past few years it’s to keep expectations extremely low. (But if she were to magically show up at the Grammys even just to sit in the back of Joni Jam for Big Yellow Taxi (“don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone”…) I think my head would explode!)

Don't get me wrong. If she can and does improve I will be ecstatic! I just mean that if people don't want to be let down if it doesn't happen, they shouldn't get too excited just yet. That's all.
And I did not mean to imply that CP are the same at all, so pardon me if it seamed like I meant that. I just was trying to say that I can relate to the struggles and pain that goes along with having muscles you can't control.

I also believe there is a lot of history we’re not fully aware of as fans that has come to light in recent months with regards to the way her career was managed and major missed opportunities. For example, I hope she shuts down the stories that Rene groomed her, etc.
Billy Joel just released a new song with so much anticipation. I hope Celine can have that moment again too with a masterpiece that stops everyone in their tracks. One thing is certain that when she does come back, it will be monumental.

This will more than likely fall in the hands of Amazon MGM as they are the distributor. They will control all of the promo and how it’s done. Unfortunately, they can’t count on Celine as a sure thing to be able to show up and physically do any promo. It’s going to be interesting to see how they maneuver.
Regarding The Grammys, I don’t think that she will be in attendance. Even as a surprise. She unfortunately (like I said above) cannot be counted on to show up. Plus the media circus would be insane. It would honestly take away from the night, quite frankly. And she wouldn’t really be able to say much as whatever questions we have will most likely be answered in the documentary. It wouldn’t make sense for her to emerge just yet.

I understand and I think I know what you want to say. I've had a bit of contact with seriously ill people over the years, and few things irritate me as much as all this "positive" ideology: "You just have to want/pray/think positively", "It's all in your head"... No, it's not all in your head, and if you're still sick, it's not because you're praying badly and not wanting enough. The world is not fair and there is a lot of chaos, chance and innocent suffering.
As for Céline, I don't have exorbitant expectations: I would like her - as free as possible from the pain that this awful disease does not spare - to be able to decide for herself what to do next with her life, that is, that the disease does not decide for her. And the hope for this is real - but it is hope, that is, something big and small at the same time.

I mean, she was there all along the journey. Pre-production started in Sep’21 (if not earlier), then Vegas was cancelled in Oct’21. Then the successive tour postponements and cancellations. They were working on the doc in earnest all through 2022, before Céline announced her diagnosis, so were there through the ups and downs of “will the show go on or not” and as Céline & her doctors were on the frustrating road to finally getting a diagnosis (since we know most SPS patients are misdiagnosed for years, given how unknown the condition is, or was before Céline made it front page news). Then, somewhere along the way, it clearly dawned on them they need to change direction from making this a career retrospective, to focusing on her SPS journey. It must have been a roller coaster.
I hope Irene goes on Q with Tom Power. She was on twice before (for Beware of Slenderman and Moonlight Sonata). They can reminisce about how Céline gave Tom the finger 😜

I hope so… and her story, when finally spoken, needs not to be rushed for sound bites. I’m wishing for in-depth and informative interview that allows Celine to speak with good follow up questions.

I mean, not only has she done several films about disabling conditions (deafness, polio, cataracts, Alzheimer’s), but also, her husband happens to be a neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s and movement disorders. Like, what are the odds?!
If you haven’t watched any of her work, I’d recommend Moonlight Sonata. I think it’s the closest to what we can expect here. (It’s on HBO but also found elsewhere online if you look around a bit…)

Like a weird bit of fate.
I wonder who was the person/ entity in charge of choosing Irene? And for what their reasons? Could she have been hand chosen by Celine herself? I will definitely be watching your recommendation this weekend, I want to get a gist of her work.

“I’ve always been an open book with my fans, and with her sensitivity and thoughtful creativity I think that Irene will be able to show everyone a part of me that they haven’t seen before… I know she’ll tell my story in the most honest and heartfelt way,” said Celine Dion.

Well, these films are made for existing fans. Sony Music has an entire division dedicated to them, and the aim is to drive catalog consumption (or, as it's know in industry parlance, a "catalog development plan".) Love Again was part of the same strategy. Much like box sets and rereleases etc., for legacy artists it's about squeezing more consumption out of existing fans rather than trying to win new ones. That's just the reality.
Of course, if these projects expand the artist's fanbase and reach others outside the hardcore fan community, that's clearly always the hope, but the reality for most "legacy acts" is that much of the business is about "preaching to the choir" rather than "converting" a new audience. That's where the $ comes from.
Point being - given these projects are aimed at the existing fanbase, they know they have to offer something new.
My suspicion, given how meticulous Rene has always been about archiving everything, is that the producers here had way more to work with than they can fit into a 90-min feature. A lot is going to be left on the cutting room floor (and potentially available for another career retrospective project), especially with the shift in focus to this being centered around Celine's SPS journey.

And yet here we are, all her big albums had some major anniversaries the past years and all we get is upgraded videos.
Sometimes the combo Sony and Celine doesn't seem to work.
But who knows what they planning after this.
Madonna and Mariah had some major re-releases, let's hope they got something similar in store for us and Celine.
