If that really is the date for digital release this has been a very depressingly short “era.”

A lot of movies go digital while still in theaters these days.

It’s interesting how pretty much all reviews say despite this movie being a dud, Céline is the highlight. I think of the many I read, there was only 1 or 2 that was somewhat negative about her.
Meanwhile, several say some flavor of “she deserved better”:

(Maybe Rolling Stone just doesn’t want the wrath of Céline fandom again 😅).

“Perhaps these missteps would be less noticeable were it not for Dion herself, who easily surpasses the narrative while on screen — and utterly dominates it through the soundtrack, to which she contributes five new songs alongside revered classics like “All By Myself.” She has the few laugh lines, including a throwaway about Drake getting a tattoo of her face, as she becomes a life coach and emotional guru to Rob and Mira, schooling them on the entwined forces of love and loss as reflected in her own romance with husband René Angélil, who died in 2016.

While her advice is as impeccable as her power turtlenecks, it is of course Dion’s overwhelming voice and music that flood your heart, not this flimsy and occasionally morbid story. It may imbue one scene or another with unearned intensity, momentarily convincing you that you’ve connected with these characters. In the aggregate, however, it’s ridiculous watching them strain to be worthy of such a score. Whatever the movie’s sporadic charms, it’s simply too small for Celine, who can only be matched by a drama with the sweep and scale of Titanic.

Or, just spitballing here, maybe Dion ought to be the star, not relegated to the role of supportive matchmaker (and executive producer). Is that so crazy? The premise of Love Again, and the personal material Dion brings to it, imply a tale in which the pop icon opens herself up again after saying goodbye to René, searching for the spark that will inspire her music to ever grander heights. No offense to Heughan and Jonas, perfectly acceptable leads for a paint-by-numbers Hallmark special, but one can’t help but think we missed the chance to see a great artist find herself — and soar.”

It’s pretty clear people want to see more of her on the big screen. I just hope she gets better material. But I completely understand why this appealed to her - she has said in interviews, years after Rene passed - that she still talks to him. So she clearly identified with the story.

I really hope Celine heals enough where if she isn’t able to perform on stage anymore she can at least act and get some more meaty roles… I think she’d shine in a role that is like the ones Jane Fonda is doing recently.

New from Variety: https://variety.com/...sic-1235604448/

“How did writer-director Jim Strouse get Celine Dion to play herself and write five new songs for his film “Love Again?”

“It took months, maybe even a full year,” Strouse tells Variety. “There was a lot of thought, eating, letters and lookbooks.”
[…]
We didn’t know if we could get her but that was always the dream,” adds Strouse, who thought he had a chance at securing her participation since “we’re all part of the Sony family,” he says. “I thought it would be easy. They’d make a call to someone” — unfortunately, that wasn’t quite the case. When Dion took longer than usual to return Strouse’s calls, he opted for different approaches like sending her a copy of the script and numerous letters until he finally won her over.
[…]

“Celine loved the words that Jim chose and the sensitivity with which he approached her husband’s death and their love story,” adds producer Esther Hornstein. “She was blown away by how Jim envisioned her role and the film.”

While Dion fans might find themselves tearing up over the emotional lyrics of her new offerings, Strouse has already heard from superfans who have pointed out that this is not her acting debut. “Someone told me she was in the 1991 series ‘le fleur de neige’,” he says, prompting Horstein to add: “Well if Celine says this is her acting debut, how can you argue with her?”
Weird, first they gave a bad review and now this?

Yeah not the successful ones.

Not necessarily. Some get dually released on streaming and in theaters on the same day. It’s just the new way since the pandemic. I haven’t been in a full movie theater here in NYC since February of 2020.

POPULAR

I watched the film yesterday and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was better than I thought. The humour was better and some of the dramatic scenes too. I particularly enjoyed Priyanka's acting, she was very natural and charismatic. Sam, on the other hand, has a somewhat limited ability in my opinion. Celine was very good as well, especially in the scene that she opens up about Rene. The script made her sassier than she is which I enjoyed as well. All songs were nicely incorporated in the film - the highlight for me was ANDHC. I almost cried in this scene.❤️

What I loved the most about the film is how Celine fandom is essentially explained. There were discussions in relation to the lyrical content of her songs. It became clear that they describe those situations when you feel overwhelmed with love or happiness and make the craziest thoughts, like "when I hear you breathe, I can touch the sky" 😁 and the film totally accounted for these emotions, describing them as real. So yes, Celine songs are exaggerated, overly sentimental, but so are we!😅

P.S. My friend who is not a Celine fan cried during the film, especially in the scene with Mira and her boyfriend that "Love of My Life" played in the background. After the movie, we went for a drink and whilst in the car he started playing Celine songs - BYLM and IACBTMN, specifically!😁 A new fan is born!😆

I did enjoy the movie. so did the audience. a few chuckles or laughs here and there. in a non-biased way, Céline did make a difference. I don't think Chopra was the right choice for the female lead. the supporting acts were far better and funnier imo. predicable sure, but an easy-to-watch kinda movie. the way they placed some songs in the background as if it's played at the restaurant they went, and esp the use of ANDHC, was a great idea.

and I became re-obsessed with WDMHBN again. it sounded so bombastic inside the cinema lol

Since pandemic I’ve noticed peeps doesn’t go much to theaters unlike before. Maybe because people got used to with the 2 years lockdown streaming movies at home.

It is a good movie! Many cristics gave it negativity, but it is most just so they can sound "smart" and mean. Like always people like mean comments. It is a good feel-good-movie. Yes, you know it is a rom-com and that main characters will somehow be together at the end of the movie. Even if you know that, it is interesting to see how it would end. Yes, it is not an Oscar´s movie, and it do not have to be. It is a movie that is good made and you will watch it again. Is it like 90´s rom-coms? In a way yes, and also a rom-com of 21st century. The movie do not make you laugh all the time, it make´s you smile. It make´s you feel relaxed and be in the moment. It make´s you feel good. 2-3 lines that Sam Heughan had, might not be the best or should I say better not most easy to play/act. That is like the only minus. I have seen many negative critics like that the Metropolitan opera did not looked like The Met. Who cares? Who cares when Hollywood is making movies about places outside US that do not look like the are? Nobody. As the same here. Many negative criticism are not based on objectivity, but on people behind pens, bloggs, podcasts that only need more attention. I gave i 3.5 of 5. SHOW MORE

I'm planning to go and watch it again... I'm gad to see everyone here enjoying the movie...
On a side note, I've seen a great number of movie critics saying the movie is a disaster, BUT CELINE IS THE BEST PART
So at least she's praised, and I think she deserve it for the good work she did...

Glad we’re all supporting Celine and going to see this movie in theaters.

Now let’s all buy the album too! Like others have said, it’s our chance to send Sony a message that Celine music is in demand!

Ok this is a mini Celine bio pic to me.  It was as if they said, ‘hey let’s make a movie about Celine Dion and I guess we should throw some extra characters in there’.  The characters of Mira and Rob had no chemistry imo.

The music sounds great in theater though!! The courage footage at the end was wonderful. It made me realize how lucky I was that she came to Houston before the world shut down.

I have had the time of my life following this woman!  Much love.

Russell Tovey hasn’t mentioned it at all on his socials…maybe he’s embarrassed he’s in it 😒

He didn’t give an Oscar worthy performance…. No reason for him to be embarrassed by the film.
